The engine ran rough because of 2 things, First, you are automatically running 10% lean because the Alcohol is 10% water, Second, Alcohol requires almost TWICE the mixture ratio of gasoline (7 to 1, instead of 14.6 to 1) for a proper burn. Double the size of the main jet in the carb, and then stand back, you'll get around a 50% horsepower increase, AND, the motor will run very cool, AND, the combustion chamber will be sparkling clean in about 10 minutes of run time. If you want to run it permanently on Isopropyl alcohol you need to get the hottest spark plug that will properly screw into the head, (many automotive plugs will work and are a much higher heat range), then get a belt sander and sand down the cylinder head as much as you dare, to get the compression ratio up... DO NOT bypass the governor or you WILL throw the rod through the side of the crankcase. Always get the motor good and hot each time you run it, or you will start to accumulate water in the oil. If you run it more than around 15 minutes, the moisture in the oil will be boiled out and won't be a problem.

*""The balanced equation is C3H8O + 9/2 O2 = 6 CO2 + 8 H2O, and the molecular weights are C3H8O = 60 g/mol and O2 = 32 g/mol. So, 1 mol * 60 g/m C3H8O : 9/2 mol * 32 g /mol O2, or 60 : 144 or 1 : 2.4. However, air is only 21 % O2 so to get 2.4 g O2 you need 2.4 / 0.21 = 11.4 g air, so the stoichiometric ratio by weight for isopropanol is 11.4 : 1.""* Quote from an Automotive forum 2005. This is likely 100% Isopropyl alcohol. Also note, Ethanol ,Methanol and Isopropyl are different.

Moonshine is usually less than 60% alcohol so I doubt it would run so good in anything but a low compression tractor from the first half of the last century, but Everclear (95%) should work fine. I second the idea of trying to find the lowest proof that will run a modern small engine. You could add about 5% of distilled water by volume until it stops.

As usual, great video & I learned something......alcohol burning engines usually have a supply line that is twice the diameter of a gas line, owing to the fact that it requires(so I was led to believe) more alcohol by volume than gasoline to produce the same power. You test seemed not to support that contention. Thanks for your time & trouble......I know you aren't becoming rich making these videos, & the videos are at once , interesting, informative, well thought out, & the effort expended in attempting to eliminate to the degree possible the sources of error that would skew the data & hence the results are without peer. The problem with running piles of nitrous through a 6hp engine is the fact that you're limited on CFM. The engine is physically not pulling in enough air, and whatever HP shot you're running will simply just escape the carb and go into the air. You're also dealing with atomized fuel being near an ignition source (boom). It'll start the mower on fire before it blows the engine.

I have an experiment for you, see if a lawn mower or any other gas motor that runs on gas will run hotter on propane. It is my understanding that it will, but everyone seems to be converting. You don't even need a conversion kit, just a gas line going to the air box with the ability to adjust it. There are actually a lot of videos on here but no one addresses the heat issue.

Barry Fields Ok that makes sense. I worked 9 years as a mechanic in the heavy duty industry and I've messed around with mowers and minibikes a descent amount when I was younger but never realized the bolt patterns would match up between the two. Ok so that removes some mystery for me. I'm curious what kind of compression ratio can be had with different heads and milling. Then maybe notch the magneto holes a bit so as to add 5 degrees of advance as well. I'm familiar with small engines decently enough but I've never attempted to build one up. I was just trying to think of cheap methods Mr. Project Farm could do. Thanks for the input.
@r.j.sworkshop7883

The problem with the flat head configuration is that when you mill off of the head it lowers the clearance area over the valves until the valves hit the head. It has been a long time since I built go-kart engines but you really couldn't get really high compression (say 12:1) out of a stock head no matter how you modified it.

It will run like shit during the 50/50 fill, but will run a lot better on the next fill! Btw, running alcohol CONSTANTLY is BAD for engines! If you live in a state that sells ethanol free gas, SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY FOR IT! * Then again it might not have that much effect on a regular valve setup, but it damn sure will clean injectors!

It would also be good to do a video on why an e3 spark plug gets more power...I suspect its cause of the extra electrodes on the spark plug which actually increases compression and not the B.S marketing crap about a multi spark, spark plug cause electricity only takes the shortest path to ground. Let's debunk their hype and get to the truth....I think it should be easy to measure the decreased volume of a combustion chamber with the e3 plug installed.

Propane will make an engine run like it's on gas,just it needs a little fuel/air ratio tweaking,the same goes for ethanol,acetone,natural gas,propane,butane, gas fumes,whatever ignites by a spark. There are millions of cars with a kit installed to run on LPG that will seamlessly turn into gas mode when the LPG runs out or if you press the fuel change button. For testing purposes you can run an engine on propane straightly with a hose on its intake but it will backfire sooner or later and you will need to constantly finding out the fuel air ratio manually for the rpm.

If you do that, you'll have to use a bonding agent such as toluene. We've done this racing karts before and if you don't use something like that it just separates. The problem there is alcohol and gas burn at different rates. Alcohol is basically water based where as gas is obviously oil based. They don't play well together. We always used Pruit racing oil to make the blend. It has the necessary ingredients built into it and was readily available. Pouring alcohol in a gas tank is a pretty good way to get rid of water in you gas tank or fuel filters. It's flammable enough to pass the water.
@rustycrustymakesstuff6528
@rustycrustymakesstuff6528 7 жыл бұрын
Frank Gutowski I don’t think I said water and alcohol don’t mix. I said alcohol and gas don’t mix. Alcohol and water will definitely mix basically letting the water burn off with the alcohol as long as the ratio of alcohol is high enough. The gas and the alcohol water mixture never integrates but if you can get enough flow to pass the mixture it will burn it off. I am not a chemist and don’t necessarily know exactly how the chemical (thinking it’s toluene but can’t be 100 percent on that) works, but there is something that makes them work together.

You have tried many fuel mixes, what about something that increases oxygen supply ? For example an ozone generator? If I'm not mistaken the oxygen alone is O2, and ozone is O3, can the extra oxygen atom increase performance?

@jussikuusela7345
@jussikuusela7345 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds interesting... does an ozone generator produce it in volumes significant for the combustion process? And if it does, will it actually be economical? It needs to draw energy from somewhere. For a stationary engine it is an interesting test. If you intend to boost a vehicle with it, either you need extra batteries or a solar panel etc. for it. Extra weight to carry in addition to the O3 generator means higher fuel consumption. If you use a wind turbine or power it from the vehicle battery, you will add to the fuel consumption just as well. I'm afraid that it would be complicated and cumbersome to the point of being impractical even if it might provide a boost.
@MrNoodlyone
@MrNoodlyone 6 жыл бұрын
O3 is a buck wild oxidant. Almost free radical Oxygen. I've used it in chemical synthesis & it usually just oxidized the crap out of your compound.... Even at -40C. Plus it is a severe irritant & very toxic. It will basically oxidize anything it touches, even you.
