Will being an extra in TV help your career? The truth about background acting

Introvert who always wanted to get into acting but was too afraid of trying but recently got into BG just to see how comfortable I would be on set. Manage to get onto some big shows and now I am hooked but want more after watching the principles do their work and thinking I wanna do that! I wanna create that type of moment. So taking up workshops to learn what I can and doing script reads. I am not ready but I hope that I can go and confidently audition. I apprecaite that there are channels like yours to help those aspiring like us. I wanna act to act because i find the understanding of human nature and using it as an expressive tool fascinating. I consider BG different than Principal or Supporting. Its not like we just hang around and do whatever we want freely on the set, we follow what we are directed to do. The difference is the attention isnt on us, it should be on them but without us the scene is empty. I wouldnt put it on my resume though but I feel it shouldnt be looked down on.

Thank you for the great video! For some reason I received contrasting advice, I was told by my agent to stay nonunion as long as possible in order to book more roles (more for nonunion voice overs/commercials). I am honestly considered a must join and since I’d like to go into film and TV would it be a good idea to join the union now or should I wait?

Birmingham “is not in the middle of nowhere.” Granted. It’s not where you need to be to get in the entertainment business. But it’s the largest metro area in Alabama…a city of 1 million with a great college football tradition and lots of good meat-and-three restaurants…
