@@rezaalan3991 yes but the roads in New Zealand are not asphalt but chipseal. And the country is prone to constant mini earthquakes that shake roads so they need to distribute weight per axle so they do not destroy the roads, that's why.

why do so many articulated trucks in New Zealand seem to be 4 axle tractors towing 4 axle trailers, do you have a per axle load limit or am I missing the point?

@@BlowOffVentil exactly, the weight per axle is less so you pay less taxes. With 2 axle tractor unit you are limited to 38 tonne by law. And pay more taxes. So the less weight per axle the cheaper taxes per km

Not necessarily, trucks for towing broken trucks are always conventional as they can fit much more powerful engines that a cabovers can’t fit.

I'm curious, most of trucks in NZ are articulated truck than semi-trailer truck, anybody can explain why? Are articulated truck give more capacity than semi-trailer truck?

capacity but also due to 2 things. One is versatility. You can use the rigid for some kind of work (deliveries in cities) and attach the trailer for line haul. The second is the corners. Many sharp corners in NZ , road without hard shoulders, you need to peek to the next lane to see if anyone is coming bacause you need to use part of the other lane. With a semi of 19 m you do it many times. With a truck and trailer of 21 m you do it less. The two articulations make the sharp corners easier.

@@SilviaParraTruckingEU-NZ-AU HOWDY from Texas! I was wondering the same thing, thanks for the explanation. I suppose that's also why there are commonly two sets of steering tires as well. We only see this kind of axle placement for extra heavy duty and off-road applications. It's very rare to see a 4 axle truck of any kind up here.

They ‘re both good. The US trucks are popular for the real heavy off road work like logging while the Euro types are good for work in urban centres.
