Ok I agree it is a silly opinion but I will say it does make sense with what he believes the 49ers to be, Nick thinks (Wrongly in my opinion) that anyone can qb them and they will be fine with the rest of their weapons and pieces all around the team, so the take is that instead of paying "Just a guy" , they should gamble since they can always get another "Just a guy" to run the offense just as well and do need money to keep everyone else around that. Again I disagree with him but it does make sense when you follow the line of reasoning and assume Nick is right about Purdy and the 49ers scouting. (Which again I do not think he is right but he obviously thinks so which is why it makes sense)

Every QB needs weapons. They can’t throw the ball to themselves. They can’t hand the ball off to themselves. They can’t block for themselves. Every good QB in this league has some good to great on linemen blocking for them or a great Rb or great WR’s. Some more than others. Burrow has less weapons than Jalen Hurts and Brock Purdy and Jared Goff have. Goff has 2 All Pro and 1 Peo Bowl offensive linemen. He has a Pro Bowl Rb. He has an All Pro WR. He has an All Pro TE. Hurts has 3 All Pro offensive linemen and an All Pro RB and an All Pro WR and a pro bowl TE. Burrow has a Pro Bowl Left tackle who is hurt right now by the way and an All Pro WR. That’s it. Mahomes has an All Pro TE and 2 All Pro offensive linemen.

I think this entire conversation is moot because I dont think Brock is going to ask for a max deal. This dude lived with a roommate until he married his wife and I'm pretty sure he still drives a truck from college. He's a small town guy and his family wasn't broke so there is no push for him to get a max contract. If Dak is a franchise quarterback, Purdy is a franchise quarterback. Dak had one of the best, if not THE best offensive roster in the NFL for most of his career. Zeke leading the league in rushing with the best offensive line in football and Dez Bryant. Dez gets followed up by a string of excellent #1 receivers...Amari Cooper, Ceedee Lamb. The line has been consistently one of the best. Pollard is very good. The tight ends have been good. And when the offensive personnel has been a little bit worse, we've seen Dak's numbers take a huge hit. Dak also get's a lot of his stat-padding done against bad teams or against prevent defense...it's been a whole narrative in sports media for 3 years now and it's CORRECT. We haven't seen Purdy fail. This year, with a lot of his weapons injured, Purdy has been pretty good. I don't really believe in either one of them, but obviously Brock is better than Dak. There's no reasonable and no statistical argument to make in Dak's favor. Now, I think Dak's contract is one of the worst three quarterback contracts in football--obviously Deshaun Watson is the worst contract--and I would really rather not pay Purdy 50 million dollars a year. This narrative that you need a superhero at quarterback to win the Super Bowl is ridiculous. What you need is a pretty good coaching staff that makes good playcalls, manages the game well, and doesn't stop running the ball down 7 in the first half when they're getting over EIGHT YARDS PER CARRY *cough* Ravens and 49ers. The Chiefs don't win Super Bowls because Mahomes is the best player in th NFL. They win Super Bowls because Andy Reid is the greatest offensive mind in the history of the NFL.

Even if never starts another game, backups make good money. I read Chase Daniel made 40 million over his career playing 5 games. He hopefully has changed the way scouts and gms look at draft prospects. He doesn’t have the outside physical traits but has accuracy, processing and reading defense. I hope he continues to have success. I dont live in California but love to see a good underdog story. 🙂 Average nfl player plays 4 years. Purdy is a $35-40 million a year QB. But wait, isn’t Trevor a $55 million a year QB, and Dak is a $60 million a year QB? Just because they get paid that much doesn’t mean they should earn that much. They are good not great QBs, so they deserve $35-40M. Hurts is a good sometimes great QB, so he deserves $40-45M. Only Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, and Lamar deserve above $50M. They have the production and the accolades to justify those payouts. If QBs wanted to actually win some playoff games though, they need to take lower payouts so they can have a better defense and more offensive weapons

The defense, special teams, and his weapons outside of CMC (who also fumbled when SF was in position to get points in the SB) had to be bailed out throughout all of last year's playoffs.

The arm injury is a big one. Two throwing arm injuries is significant enough to argue health concerns. Regardless, Purdy should take less and allow the team to spread the wealth. Winning multiple championships brings in so much more money for QBs over the long haul.

I think both points are valid. Purdy has done enough to justify a nice contract and the 49ers likely would have a sound business case to wait one more year instead of pushing a contract early. It's a little bit more painful for Purdy because he's playing on such a poor contract compared to other starters (or even backups) but that's not the 49ers fault. The throwing arm injuries are worrying.

Jimmy Garoppolo is the measuring stick here. Both he and Purdy have played with and without McCaffrey yet their performance is similar with him and without him. Both went to a SB and lost.
