Ben's learning curve also faces the challenge of him not having anyone substantially better than he is to learn from. I think most players improve most rapidly by exposing themselves to superior players and getting beaten a lot until they adapt. But the best in the world can't do that.

Most of the serves called were due to the players arm moving slightly upwards right before the release of the ball.

I think Table Tennis is actually a better foundational experience to lead into Pickleball than Tennis is. So once China (and India, and almost every other country other than the US) get into Pickleball, their Table Tennis phenom's will make a huge impact on the sport. What remains to be seen is whether the pickleball experience translates well into those cultures and if they actually enjoy playing it as much as the US seems to enjoy it.

One thing about the serves : They are trying to adjust the serve so it's a step forward.

You can still toss the ball as high as you want _ as long as you aren't playing PPA. USAP has not modified their "official" Rule governing the serve. You can still toss the ball in ANY tournament SANCTIONED by the USAP. The PPA tournaments are not USAP sanctioned

PB Viewership - I found an indoor group to play at during the winter and, of the 25 people that were there an one day, there was only 3 that actually watched PB. The average person that is playing just for exercise doesn't seem to care to watch Pro PB. In this circumstance, most of the players seem to think they will get better, on their own, if they play twice a week and they are happy with that. You'll never be able to get those people to watch.

Any softness in current PBall viewership is probably due simply to the newness of the sport, but will probably settle into a track very similar to Tennis (but never approach the viewership of US Football). When I watch PBall with non-players (like my parents), they are mostly amazed by the fast-hands battles, so I think that's one of the viewing strengths that PBall may have over Tennis for non-players. Oddly, Table Tennis matches for most non-players move much to fast and the points are too short to keep most people interested. But PBall seems to be in a sweet spot where the points can last a long time with flurries of intense exchanges. Because of that, I think watching it may catch on even with a lot of non-players.

A player's union doesn't magically mean players suddenly have all this power. Everything is bargained for and negotiated. The PPA has to agree on anything going into the collective bargaining agreement.

Regarding viewers, I play at a local rec center a few times a week, with some very good players, and a private court for league (tend to be older in the day and younger in the evening sessions at both), and when I talk about pro tournaments and pro players, almost nobody at the rec center knows about either, and only a few at the club. On top of breaking out the regular players from the people just trying the sport, you also have to look at the number of recreational players vs competitive players and those interested in watching a pro-sport. I think the potential audience shrinks significantly. Then you add drama about mergers, poor camera work and worse commentary, suboptimal broadcast scheduling, changing and ambiguous rules, and everything else you mention, pickleball is much more fun to play than watch for most people.

What I find interesting is that MLP is effectively shut down. They are not putting on any events, they are not paying their players and do not seem to be doing any real business. I'm guessing they are not receiving any revenue from the sponsors or media either. If I am an MLP player I would not have a warm fuzzy feeling. If I gave up a real job because of the promises made I would be pretty much screwed. Claiming to be near signing a merger agreement is a pretty sorry excuse for running a business. By what metric is MLP still a business???

Rules - couldn't disagree more! Why would anyone want more organizations using their own Rules? Especially in rec play, there are too many people that either don't know the Rules (as defined by the USAP) or don't feel they need to follow them. I have already been asked about the PPA serve rules and I had to point out that those are specific to the PPA Only! MLP brings the same issues - which amuse me because no rec players play a Team concept - but the scoring and the players playing from one side and alternating serves really confuse newer players. No one wants to go to a local court and start off by asking what Rules will be followed. If you want to kill the sport, let everyone make their own Rules and then no one will understand the Rules. PB needs ONE set of Rules that EVERYONE follows.

I don't think the new serve rule will work out in the long run. Unfortunately, the drop serve solves the basic problem they are trying to solve so I think they're going to have to go with it in the end. I hate it because I don't use it, but it does take the subjectivity of the refs out of the equation.
