Good video. In the central Virginia area we have a similar geology to the Atlanta area. About 25% of the home we test come back above 4pCi/L. However over the last 35 years we've been testing the average portion of the 25% of the home that are high which are on crawl spaces, is 49%. This tells us, it's the geology below the house, not the foundation type, which governs whether the house will have a Radon issue. Our last house of the day today was on a traditional vented crawl space and came in at 40+ pCi/l and I've seen them as high as 257 pCi/l..... again, on a traditional vented crawl space, with all the vents open. I'm curious as to how many negative CFMs the average home can exert on the earth below it. I've seen homes with a crawl space as you've described that go strong negative and pull tons of radon in regardless of the fan in the crawl space vvents. Disclaimer, we do not do mitigation, period.

Wally - Take the square footage of the building and multiply it by its height inside. A building with an area of 30,000 square feet and a ceiling height of 20 feet will contain 600,000 cubic feet. I recently found your channel and it has been so helpful! I have a question about a radon installation that was done in our home we recently bought. The inspector who followed up said they only put the pipe into the cement, effectively pulling air just from the wall of the house. Nothing is going into the crawlspace itself. Nothing into the ground as far as we can see. No barrier put down. Is this correct and still effective? Or did they not do it correctly? I hope you see this and Thank you for your help!

Monica - thanks for watching! An effective radon mitigation system depends on the foundation type of a home. To determine the type and location of the mitigation system, a radon mitigation professional may conduct diagnostic testing. Radon mitigation systems draw air continuously from soil and vent it outdoors through a pipe that extends above the edge of the roof. This pipe runs inside or outside the home and vents outside, away from windows and openings. Further, foundation cracks and holes are sealed. This reduces radon migration and makes the radon mitigation system more efficient.

So the 1 cfm fan doesn't remove enough radon? And would you dukes butal tape caulk and tape?

Most crawl space fans I’ve looked at have a feature that shuts them off when the temperature drops low enough, do any of them have a bypass so you can choose to run them constantly? If not how does radon gas escape encapsulated crawlspaces in the winter? Is radon as much of an issue in winter?

What about crawlspaces that have been dug out and converted to a workroom. The crawlspace now has a concrete floor but no windows or means to ventilate it other than running the vent pipe 40 feet to an external wall at another part of my home. Radon levels in my crawlspace are 11 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) Long Term Average.
