Today Lenovo Legion announced their new 2023 Legion 9i gaming laptop that is liquid cooled without the need of a water reservoir, their gaming handheld Legion Go that will go head to head with the Asus Ally and the Legion Glasses that allows you to watch horror movies without your parents knowing.

Each to their own, this upcoming handheld have USB4 function for external dock use GPU card etc just like Aya neo and gpd handhelds (mentioned by tech lad tuber), unlike Asus Rog Ally... The downside is the detachable wireless controllers on the right side have back buttons are placed horizontal instead of vertical position like the Steam deck... Hope to separate my pc hardware into 3 different uses, one for daily & normal productivity laptop, a pc handheld and a tablet (cost less than a 1K USD, OS not specified) all while using usb c port to recharge since the usb c port is the norm now..

Sounds good. I have a steam deck and tried playing in on a cruise outside. Even though I was sitting under a roof I couldn't see the screen at all. I take my gaming laptop away with me and I would much prefer play on that than the Steam Deck. I also had two play station Vitas and didn't use them much either. For me I'll just stick to my laptop

The " liquid cooling" hasn't actually got anything to cool the liquid like external radiator, so when it reaches the same temp as the cpu it has no where for the heat to go! Meaning youre paying to circulate warm water around a tiny tube for nothing. A test was done unpluging the pump and the performance was the exact same making hardly any difference.

If nvidia made a 220w 4090 ti card for such laptops, I would say that cooling the legion 9 would make a lot of sense. Legion 7 also cooled this card well...

Kinda wondering what the point of "water cooling" in the 9i is, given its pretty much the same hardware as the L7i which didn't have problems with cooling FWICT (except for maybe 4090 vram temps), and theres no OC/tweak room beyond its TBP and single power adapter limits ... I don't expect it to be any different here

IMO, I didn't like the color neither the design of 9i they put too much space above the keyboard and small track pad but i don't know how much inches is the screen?

The gpu never gets over 78c on my i7 4090. Water cooling is wasted on gpu. I like the display but it should come with AMDs cpu. Stephen makes great points all round. Noticed it comes with 2 power bricks too

@@OWNORDISOWN The 2 power bricks are not meant to be used simultaneously. Keeps the overall weight down when traveling with the laptop and 140W power delivery charger.

Few Years ago You recommended me the Lenovo y740 with i7 8750h and rtx 2070, the laptop still play all the games like when I first bought it. Now this time I want the legion go. More mobile is a plus for me, 1 or 2 hours max play time is ok for me, I have a life and I can't be playing for hours. I can't wait till the legion go comes out ❤

While the specs for the i9 looks very impressive, it looks VERY uncomfortable to use. Not only is that track pad small but since they moved the keyboard down so much, there is no way you can use it without your palms resting on the edge of the laptop, unless you literally have baby hands.

They optimized the cooling by taking the airflow from up top of the laptop so it has even more airflow from the top and the bottom that's really good.

Interesting! So the Legion 9i is up for pre-order in my country (Ireland), there are 2 variations, one with a 4080 (same CPU), 32GB RAM/1TB SSD, this model is €4270. The 4090 with 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD is €5300. Not sure about these at all, I have Legion 7i 4080 and it is perfect for my needs. If I wanted the 4090 I'd probably just get it in the 7i and save the money. I notice the additional venting above the keyboard deck on the 9i which makes the trackpad smaller. Moving on the to GO, I'd hate to travel with that if it is bigger again than the Ally. I found the Ally bulky enough to put into a flight bag once I had my laptop and charger etc packed. The glasses is something I would be interested in and can imagine they would be a perfect companion for a Steamdeck/Ally/Legion Go. The price is €499 which is quite a gap to the US price of $329! Meant to say unlike the 9i announcement, the Legion Slim 5 14" OLED/4060 was announced in August but no sign of it yet?

Seriously besides everything below a 4080 being crap, crazy high laptop prices and the imo bad port selection on probably 99% of this gens laptops it makes me depressed thinking that 5000 series (and probably when they release new laptop designs) is in 2025.....

A 4080 and a 4090 is a big difference. Now, I saw the prices for the 9i and they are exorbitant. So a 7i 4080 I think is the best option on the market today 🥳

@ignacio7250 Thanks. There is a reason why I started off with mostly 4080 laptops. I do think they offer a good performance boost over the 3070ti and 3080Ti laptops. The 4070, although OK doesn't offer much more than the 3070Ti apart from frame generation and I'm still on the fence about that helping 1% lows. The 4090 is just too expensive for 9% improvement over the 4080.

@OWNORDISOWN in the US website you can build it with a 4080 and cheap ram and 1tb nvme but I want top of the line. But I just found out the cpu and gpu faces the keyboard. My one week old dead Acer Predator Triton 17X is the same way and you can feel the burn on your fingertips, even at Max fan

@rotarydude07 Good to know that the 4080 is available. The Legion 7i Pro was cool to the touch but the keyboard deck is actually plastic. My Cyberpowerpc Tracer VII has a metal deck and that doesn't get hot. I think if the chassis is thin, like 19mm and no cool air is brought in through the metal deck it can get rather warm. Lenovo has a good return policy so if you don't like it they accept free returns...

Why don't they simply make the successor to the alienware m11x, that 11' gaming laptop from 2011? Seriously, just make a 12' gaming laptop. Already the legion go has an almost 9' screen. Its gonna be the size of an ipad pro which has almost 13' panel. And thank you stephen for finally pointing out the uselessness of liquid cooling. These companies use liquid cooling but STILL dont give us a desktop 4090. JUST give us a desktop 4090 at 230w. And give us ryzen cpu's so they can still do well at 50 to 55w. With liquid cooling you can probably crank the cpu to 100w.

I was thinking the same thinking Eric. At some point we will back to having the Razer Edge which I had and reviewed 7 years ago, lol. Yeah, they must have known that saying it can cool a combined 230W as a selling point would be shot down in flames.. its all nonsense as you say.

@@OWNORDISOWN Glad someone is being reasonable. Many people don't even know nvidia crammed an rtx 6000 quadro gpu in an asus 15' 3kg studio proart that had a 200w tdp. The rtx 6000 quadro has a die size of 745mm sq. 4090 is 609mm sq. Both have 24gb of vram. Infact the asus laptop let the rtx 6000 use 200w while the cpu was at 35w with a 300w brick. With a 330w brick I'm sure we can push at least 230w and 45w on the cpu. And we can set our own custom power limits, so if we want to we can set the cpu at 65 or 100w even and make the gpu use less power. That asus laptop came out 3 years ago.

@@OWNORDISOWN Yeah, mxm would be perfect for desktop replacements. I abhor the reduction to max laptop tdp despite cpu's not needing much power to perform well. Not to mention we are cooling like 250 to 280w of combined load now. Why can't the gpu have 220 to 230w? A 4090 could do with that quite well.
