the london taxi service is easily the best in the world in terms of knowledge and professionalism. i've lived in ldn, NY, tokyo, berlin, singapore, hong kong and geneva and their taxis are nowhere close to ldn standards. i defy anybody to disagree.

One morning, I had some comically bad luck with the cabmen's shelters. I rode into town, over Battersea Bridge, right onto Cheyne Walk, & the shelter had scaffolding up around it. So, left into Flood Street, Sydney Street, Thurloe Place, then right out in-front of the V&A only to discover that a car had crashed into the one there. Beauchamp Place, & the Pont Street one was getting a fresh coat of paint. Then down Lyall Street, left into Eaton Square, & I finally managed to have breakfast at the one on Grosvenor Gardens. Later that day I found myself on Hanover Square & found the cabmen's shelter currently in the process of being relocated round the corner because of Crossrail.

What you were saying at about 4.00 is so true. When I was on buses one of the driver trainers told me ‘you can read people easy, then ones who are gonna try to hustle you, them who are lost etc’. Soon pick up on it. Being on a night service through the university areas for most of my tenure it was usually fairly obvious who was my on a fall asleep, potential to vomit etc.

Hello! I work around central London and often wonder about the Taxis who are covered in adverts. Could you do that with your cab if you wanted? How is it decided what is advertised on them? Do the companies advertising have to pay for them to restore them to black or are they just permanently converted from advert to advert? So many questions! (Love the channel btw) :)
@TomtheTaxiDriver
@TomtheTaxiDriver 2 жыл бұрын
They vary depending on whole wrap or just the little sides. In my mind they don’t pay enough. It’s effectively a moving billboard so a prime bit of real estate. There’s a few companies that manage the advertising in taxis, they get the contracts from companies and then distribute out to the drivers who are enrolled in it. Most people keep their contract rolling but the company can request you come in at any point to have your advert changed, it’s a pretty efficient operation but a bit tedious having to drive there sporadically to get it done. For me, a clean plain black taxi is the best form of advertising.

@@TomtheTaxiDriver Agreed, I don't mind a walk but I'd have to be really broke for TFL not to get a fare from Holborn to Lancaster Gate on that one. Having said that although I don't live in the city I have the advantage of having been there enough to have a vague idea where the tube stations and such actually are. Turns out London's transit system is way easier to navigate practically if you don't trust any of their diagrams which will absolutely not tell you that a line you can use is probably quicker to walk to than the change of train is.

Really enjoyed this one - lots of shuffling around Russell Sq - Back in the Early '90s I was at Uni in Brunswick Sq, lived for a couple of years on Tavistock Square and a year off York Way and so this was very familiar. I certainly agree that the Kings X area was much seedier and rundown back then and I hardly recognise the TCR these days. It's lost much of its character with the lack of strange electronics shops and the loss of the Dionysius kebab shop.

Another great video Tom👍 I'm thinking going to London next Sunday, depending what the weather is doing. I'll be taking my dog with me and planning to use trains and tubes but probably get a black cab back to the station. Are dogs allowed in black taxis? Is there an extra charge for them? Also are cabs the same rate at weekends as during the week, meaning is there a surcharge for weekends? Probably daft questions to ask, but would be good to know. Especially if my little dog is going to stop a cabbie from picking us up.
@TomtheTaxiDriver
@TomtheTaxiDriver 2 жыл бұрын
Real mixed bag on dogs, all depends on the driver. I personally don’t mind so long as the dog stays on the floor, not the seats. In terms of weekend rate, yes the meter is slightly higher, would mean that a £12 journey might be more like £14 👍🏻
