I like to use onions in my 2" mountain howitzer, I call it the "Onionwerfer". Onions can always be peeled to a nice tight gas seal, if you start with an onion bigger than the bore and they come round and cheap. A few months after an "onion shoot" I found onions growing downrange, they were "planted" by the 'werfer!

I actually know a guy who got seriously injured by a cannon similar to this one. We have a new year's tradition in the Netherlands where people jump into cold lakes to celebrate the new year. Couple years ago, they were celebrating it with a nice crowd of people waiting to jump in the lake. They'd usually use a starting pistol or something for it, but the organisers managed to get one of those small cannons for it. So, there's a couple hundred folks standing on the sidelines waiting to go, with a city council member doing the honors of firing the cannon. It had been loaded by the owner of the cannon who fired it frequently. They just used some paper, no projectile. He lights the fuze, waits and.... nothing happens. The crowd waits a couple seconds, then people decide 'fuck it' and run into the water. The city council guy stands in front of it when suddenly it goes off. It hits him right in the lower leg, shredding it severely. The guy lost function in his foot for quite a while but actually managed a full recovery. But yeah kids, don't be that guy and stand in front of a lit cannon.

An ol' friend of mine bought a small farm out in the boonies, and, according to the neighbors, the previous own was very peculiar. Peculiar as in about half a bubble off plumb. They mentioned that the guy had an old cannon he used to fire as a noise maker. Well, my friend was mowing a filed right behind the neighbors house, and he discovered the previous own was doing more than making nose. About 40 yards (perhaps a tad less) from the neighbor's house was a canon ball the loonie had fired in that direction. In time, a few other canon balls turned up in various locations on the property, but none in the proximity of anyone's house. Not sure of the size - I never measured them - but were roughly 3 inches in diameter. Imagine one of those coming through the back door to your house.
