I had a 95 7.3 PSD as my first truck. The one I had was an X-Lawn care truck & it sat in a field for 3yrs. $250 later she was mine. Towed her home, threw a set of good batteries in her, & she frigin started right up & idled instantly. She had a fuel leak, so we fixed that & a few other things. Driver her for a year then had head gasket issues & injector issues. During that time I did a straight pipe, 3.55 rear axle swap to make her better for the HWY & that’s about it. No tuning at all, & didn’t want too.

These 7.3s if they are healthy will start just fine above 35 degrees without them. I used to have an old 95 down here in Texas, & just turned em off & had em on a switch so I can use them once a year when it got cold below 40-35 degrees. She would always start right up & run like a clock. I’ve got a 93 idi rn & I miss the iconic sound & instant start up. I had done a straight pipe & a ton of tuneup stuff on her & even with head gasket issues & injector issues she still ran like a clock no blow by at all. I’d get another PSD for a work truck or as a 2nd truck & have my idi as my backup/oil burner.

Should do a rebuild on the 7.3L. Use the motor as an engine swap candidate, along with the CAT.
@josephbugaj8149
@josephbugaj8149 3 жыл бұрын
Doesn’t have to be a fan of the motor, but it’s agreed that the 7.3L is a stout diesel motor in terms of reliability. It’s even been stated by many that it is one of the best diesel engines to be ever equipped in a heavy duty truck or van, even buses and box trucks. International (at the time) sure knew what they were doing and it is one of my favorites in terms of diesel motors.
@josephbugaj8149
@josephbugaj8149 3 жыл бұрын
@Patrick Baptist I agree. The only Maxxforce engine that’s decent is the DT. I drive a bus that has a VT365, but I told myself that as soon as I was able to purchase one, take out the 365 and drop in a T444E engine. I’ve seen some run forever, and the traits the 7.3L has are second to none. Ability of running dirty fuel, even biodiesel with little to no modifications is one of the traits. Brute mechanical simplicity is another trait, thanks to the 6 head bolts per cylinder and the fixed geometry turbo. Indeed dollar per mile, the engine is the cheapest and the best engine in the IH lineup. (Nice job on the project so far 👍. Might even video log my swap if I could get a bus cheap and an engine cheap.)

We have a ‘99 F550 bucket truck, yea, if that engine is cold, we have to put one, sometimes two running vehicles on it just to keep the batteries charged while cranking it, and with starter fluid. Once it starts it has to sit there and idle for about 15/20 minutes before you can drive it. If the block heater was plugged in then it starts right up and runs well right away.

@@daviddelambert2752 I’ll be the first to say I don’t know that awful much about engines and I’m learning as I go- but I thought there were some differences between engines used for stationary things and engines in vehicles. Nothing that couldn’t be solved with some other parts or workarounds, it would just be a matter of money and finding those workarounds. Though I imagine, putting this engine in a small industrial vehicle would be easier than a pickup or something, since with a pickup you’d have to figure out some kind of adapter to connect the engine to the transmission, when they probably already make adapters for the little industrial vehicles. Anything is possible with enough time, money, and effort. It’s just a matter of, “is it worth it in this particular instance?”

It more than likely bent an exhaust pushrod "thumping/popping" out the intake when it the either explosion happened. 7.3 cams and lifters last forever and have almost 0 failures but rockers break pushrods bend and rocket pedestals will break off aswell.

You would be sweeping up the crank off the ground if you tried that with a 6.0 power stroke

You do realize that the rotating assembly in a 6.0 is stronger than a 7.3 right?

Sounds like a dead hole with that starter skip. Plus not enough battery to get rpm enough to trigger the IDM? It lives! Gotta love a 7.3
