Yeah you tested it but you didn't really test it. As others have pointed out, the method was skewed heavily in favor of the MagnaCut. You can see where the rust originates on the other knives... from the liner and pivot and backspring. Take them all apart, and do just the blades, or do them the correct way, spray them hourly with seawater for a couple of days. I have no doubt at all that the Magnacut is very resistant, but I also know that the other alloys "tested" don't do too bad, either, even the D2. Honestly the S35VN seems to have done extremely well. You can tell that the rust is coming from the backspring, what little there is. But if you want to test and then crow about how great Magnacut is, I am not disagreeing, but give it a fair test so nobody can say you are cheating like most youtubers touting their pet product.

Some of the rust is also coming from the washers, frames, and thumb stubs. Just testing a blade without the other parts would be more accurate.
@fullfire0
@fullfire0 Жыл бұрын
washers are copper and can't rust, frames are usually g10 or some composite that can't rust, or titanium that can't rust. Very rarely do you see just plain steel frames, and usually only on cheap knives. Thumb studs I agree could rust, depending on what they're made of. I'd be more concerned about the hardware on a folding knife and the lock bar more than anything.

@@fullfire0copper can and will react with brine, deteriorating to its salts (you know, that green stuff the Statue of Liberty is covered with, CuCl). That might, in effect, passivize the steel, speeding up the process of steel corrosion. The same goes for all other components, especially if not made out of the same steel type as the blade itself.

So, it’s like CPM 3V. Sort of. My only “gripe” about D2 is that I find it difficult to sharpen but that’s just a “me” issue. More time and technique and that goes away.

Should spray it on every 20 minutes so that the metal can react with the air and the water otherwise you’re just sticking metal in water, it’ll show rust better that way, if you don’t wanna deal with spraying it set up one of those air freshener sprayers with water and set it in range of the knife and if you can set the time to 20 minutes.

Not a fair test. All other steels besides the magnacut were folders which have steel parts in the pivot and liners that transfer rust to the blade. The magnacut bradford was a fixed blade. If you are going to test you have to test fairly.

@@hurryporter4824 if you are going to do the test of this kind, all of the samples should be the same to have actual comparability with each other. No use for a super steel. Not field friendly when it comes to sharpening. No doubt great stuff, just not for me. 1095 or 14c28n.
@growleym504
@growleym504 5 ай бұрын
Yes field friendly, depending on temper. The thing is, buyers want hardness or they say that they do. Makers are cool with that, and give them what they want, even brag about how hard their blades are, and then the end user has a hard time refreshing the edge, with his AlOx stone or Arkie or Belgian Blue and whines and cries about it. Then he goes to a diamond plate which will cut basically anything, and whines about the chippy edge he gets from putting an HRC64 edge with a hyperacute bevel angle to a cheap diamond hone. Magnacut or most any other "super steel" can easily be tempered down to HRC 58 or so, and that is still pretty hard, harder than most knives actually, but now also very tough and durable, and not so hard that your favorite India or carbordumdum stone can't handle it. You can HT a piece of 1095 to HRC64 and knock it down with the temper to 63 and it will be just as hard to sharpen, but more brittle and chippy than the MagnaCut or some S35VN. Definitely not supersteel, and it shows, in performance. Temper down to HRC57 or so and you got you a good knife, but it will rust a hell of a lot quicker than any of the steels tested here. Treat it with ospho or onion juice and then keep it oiled and you good, but the stainless steels you don't have to baby. I actually LIKE carbon steel in the kitchen, but not in my pocket or toolbox.The blades I make are razors, not knives, and I tried 440C like everybody else, never found them to take the brilliant edge that a well made 01 or 1084 or 1095 razor will take. I have a couple sticks of MagnaCut that will get made into razors sometime this year and I have high expectations, and also some S35VN on the way. and I have seen what a great razor you can make from that stuff, and also what a crappy razor you can make from the same steel. You can't just freestyle knives or razors out of these alloys with your barbecue grill, hair dryer, and magnet. You have to pay close attention to the heat treat data and regulate times and temps to comply pretty darn closely, and you must resist the urge to leave it "just a little bit harder". The hardest blade is not usually the best blade, especially when the bevel angle is very acute.

The only way to properly test for corrosion is to: 1) have the same finish on all blades as coarser finishes promote corrosion; 2) have the steel well wiped out with a solvant like acetone to make sure there is no rust inhibiter on it (oil, cutting/tapping/drilling fluid) or, inversely, a substance that can exacerbate corrosion like mild acid (from acidic fruits for example). When testing a particular property, all other variables must be eliminated. If not, it's barely more than monkeying around and adding more confusion. I salute the intention and effort, but criticize the method. In this case, disassembling, refinishing and thouroughly cleaning the blades should have been done.
