Wily I would like to personally thank you, telling the story of my family’s’ trucking history. That KW has been sitting in that exact spot for all 25 years of my life. It was beautiful to see Granddad tell a few of the many many stories about the history of that truck. Growing up I use to play around in my grandparents yard or mow their yard wondering would it ever run again. To see you and your team work tirelessly on getting it to start again was nothing short of amazing. Thank you for this video again! To capture the pure emotion of my grandad hearing it run again was a beautiful tribute of the many years of my family’s deep trucking history and tradition.

In the battery box is a series-parallel switch. The purpose of that switch is to send 24 volts to the starter when the key is turned to start, then revert to 12 volts when not cranking. It takes 2 12 volt batteries, one positive ground and one negative ground to make it work. It has been at least 30 year since I last replaced one, so i don't remember the proper wiring.

I learned to drive a truck at age thirteen, back then they would tell you, well, you got till the end of the road or field if it was a tractor to figure it out, i was happy and scard at the same time, my leg would shake something awful when i used the clutch. I guess because of all that, i really enjoy teaching a young person when the opportunity comes along.

On the cab jack, when going up the hydraulic pressure should release the latch then start moving the cab up. As the cab goes over center you flip the lever and you can jack it up, controlling the rate of rise over center. The same thing when lowering the cab. Reverse the lever start jacking it down, then as it comes back over center reverse the lever once more and control the rate of descent. It's a little tricky at first but once you do it it makes sense. There's probably a wire in the battery box that connects the 12 volt side of the electrical system to the key switch which connects the gauges, lights, charging system and AC/heat.

My dad drove a 1948 LJ- in Akers Motor Lines red- wrecker, with integral sleeper and 750 Holmes - for 16 years, up and down the east coast, picking up wrecks and breakdowns - "drop it off at the nearest terminal, bring it back to Charlotte, etc." I had the chance to buy that truck long after it had been sold at public auction and put to work at a private wrecker outfit (Akers had gone bankrupt in 1972) - alas, parts were getting harder to find, and the asking price ?? $5,000 - more than i could raise out of pocket, in 1985 - and he made it plain(although he knew it had been my dad's baby since it was nearly new) that was a special offer not available to just anybody........ i miss that truck, knew it from childhood - and often wonder what became of it.

You need a 12 volt positive ground and a 12 volt negative ground everything has a speacial way to connect to the voltage reducer on back of battery box starter turns over on 24 volt then after it starts engine it goes down to 12 volt.any kenworth dealer here in west coast mountains of usa or canada will be familiar with the setup lots of old kenworths logging up here that have that system.
