Just proves these engines were built to last unlike the cheap mass produced rubbish you get today.

Funny as pulled a virtually identical setup out my shed today as having a sort out . I remember going back about 10 years ago was when I last ran it for 5 mins then stuck it back in shed again and even then it probably hadn't been started since 1992 when my dad built his house . Mine just has 2 single switched 240 v sockets . Anyway this time 2024 I thought I wonder if it will start again .Bearing in mind that the diesel has been in the tank for the best part of 30 odd years it started after the second try .I tried a sander in both the sockets and it ran .So that started twice in 30 years with 30 year old diesel and it ran perfectly .Funny as had to get used to the starting handle procedure again .Never seen that way of starting an engine before ,wonder why they did it .Good job the starting instructions were readable still on engine 😝😝

Hiya Bruce thanks for commenting. Actually I did strip this down and rebuild it, I think it looks really smart now and I use it periodically. I've made a short video of the restoration here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3TCYpSHj7yDatE

Well done. Had never heard of Petter until recently. On the "Travels by Narrowboat" video series (was youtube, now Amazon), the bloke's boat (Aslan) has a vintage Petter McLaren engine. Most of every episode has it put-put-putting away quite happily in the background. Very relaxing. Here's a link where he has to do some work on it kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYu3d3xpZ7hqecU

Thanks Steve, I enjoyed that. Yes nice old engines are the Petter's, although the one in my video here is a fast-runner at 3000rpm so not quite so therapeutic to listen to. I also very much like the Gardner engines, they are beautifully well made and sound really lovely in a narrow boat: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWq7qZmmqrqpqZI

I wouldn't pack it in plastic foil. Better store it where it is covered but where the air can freely get around it and dry it.

What did you put in as fuel? Nice find.

Thanks Clayton. It had some old diesel sitting in the tank already, not very much, probably many years old. I tipped in some Liqui Moly Diesel Purge from that red container you saw. It's actually a fuel, you can run just on that if you wanted to, only you wouldn't want to because it's quite expensive. It's absolutely amazing stuff though, it lubricates everything, dissolves deposits, cleans the fuel lines and injectors, and makes the engine start much more easily. If I've got an old diesel engine that I'm expecting to have trouble bringing back to life, I'll bung a load of it in the tank first and it'll fire up much easier. This engine fired up first time, probably before it had even managed to pull through any Liqui Moly so in hindsight it didn't need it but it still does the engine a lot of good to run though some of it anyway.

Really like your cromium ratchet spanner, brand? And thanks for the video :)

Thanks for the comment Alvaro. The ratchet and socket are made by King Dick Tools (Abingdon, UK). They are excellent quality, accurately machined and last forever. But they are quite expensive. However, they are the kind of tool that you could pass down through generations. www.kingdicktools.co.uk/
