With my micra k12 sitting at 169'000 miles Im pleased to see the K12 work some miracles here for you as well... God only knows why but it explains the Guide of ..." No need to set the plug gaps new ,or at any time in servicing "

Yeah they seem to be bullet-proof little engines !

This explains why I only had a misfire at lower speeds when one of my plugs was broken like this. If all 4 are broken like yours it’ll run smoother than mine did since all of yours are under performing. Your mileage would be crap though. When only one is broken and the others are good that broken one definitely stands out.

Anyone else immediately googled for a spark plug tester? 😂

A ground electrode interrupts the flow of gas, causing an occasional miss. The spark in a surface gap has a longer distance to travel, but it's conductivity is enhanced, carried, actually, by the surrounding electromagnetic field, creating a plasma effect. It is very efficient, best used in very high compression engines.

I just read a 2013 paper on plugs showing that removing the electrode leads to more stable firing. The electrode interferes with the ignition kernels...or something. But I do wonder about the impact on the distributor, wires, and coil. Good stuff

They call these surface gap/discharge spark plugs. Was thinking about doing this for a custom gap. Most surface discharge plugs have a gap of 0.010" - 0.020"

An engine idling is a much easier task versus the duty, the ignition system has, under full load and when revving at high rpm.. In my case a, resistor-less, Bosch W8DCO CU, (CU standing for copper central electrode and O standing for a wider central electrode, (3 mm vs conventional 2.5 mm)), having the firing point @ 3mm., (OEM standard), was necessary in order to operate under really tough conditions, with heavy load and more than 6000 rpm., without a ground strap. With the specific setup the spark plug works as a semi-surface discharge spark plug, having a gap of ~ 4mm, (0.18'')! The engine is a supercharged vw g60 @ 200 ABT hp., and it took some more ignition update steps to optimize the total operation. Less emissions, more torque, more power and a rapid cold and hot start are the results. The Syncro Heresy

I should imagine that the larger spark plug gap will cause issues under heavy engine load when the fuel mixture is much denser. The engine is doing well though with the huge distance the spark has to jump. The ignition coils are more than up to the job!

Side gapping would be more consistent, with lower current draw

THIS just happened in a car I JUST purchased while checking the spark plugs yesterday for a fresh maintenance start. Plug in Cylinder 4 was LOOSE when taking coil off and there was lots of black soot/carbon build up on intake head walls. I unscrew plug fully & there’s NOT “L” TIP, just center nipple! I made a “straw funnel” & attached it to my vaccum and put it in the cylinder to suck up any debris. I’m not sure if plug tip is in there or not how even how long it’s been snapped off, The Engine seems to run fine. There are NO CEL’s. I ordered a endoscope off Amazon so I can see what’s in the cylinder for sure. What’s the chances the spark plug tip went out the exhaust valve and into the car converter?! 😅 wishful thinking, I know….. 😢😢

@@screwsnutsandbolts yes. They were snug tight and looked normal upon inspection. I ordered a endoscope and I can see the fcuking tiny piece against the cylinder wall. I’m gonna attach a rubber hose to the end of my vaccum to see if I can suck it up. I really don’t wanna take the top end apart for this one piece. I think we’ll eventually fish it out, it’s just gonna take some clever McGiver type ish… but the cylinder doesn’t appear to be nearly has scratched at the chainsaw in this video, thank god

Endoscope for the win! Spotted piece in Toyota cylinder, wasn’t able to fish it out with magnet OR using latex tubing attached to vacuum. Wound up leaving other 3 plugs/coils attached and starting engine with problem cylinder open (no plug/coil attached) for like 10 seconds. Pressure blew it out the top of engine! Endoscope showed that My focus did NOT have spark plug Debris in the cylinder so it must have went out the exhaust valve… endoscope showed cylider in very good condition too! Both cars back on the road with no misfire/running issues 🎉
