I'm from DC.....I got introduced to Screw in college in 1995. Same day I first tried cannabis. Bonita Applebum was the mix. I fell in love with it that first listen. THEN I read an article about Screw in the Vibe magazine ("Have You Been Screwed") and I was already hip to the phenomenon by then. Almost 30 years later I still listen to it with a smile on my face. RIP Screw, a true pioneer.

I never heard Screw trip on the Northside. It was people around him with the noise. Screw was for the whole city. Swishahouse was backing up Screw on the culture he originated.

Man, I got into Screw music late in the game (around 2002-03), so I've had to go back and learn my history over tapes, interviews and various conversations on message boards about the culture. It's been multiple tapes Screw shouted out the North, and really showed love to all sides of Houston and the South, I feel like what he tripped on mostly was folks using the name "Screw", it was his brand, his namesake. and here you got people saying "Hey, this is a "Screw Mix" and its some trash or not his work. but it say "Screwed" and I think we all can agree, the feelin' you got from a legit Screw Tape vs. A Swishahouse or Ron C Mix is non-debatable mane. Screw's mixes were like listening to live party you happened to be invited to, 2 Turntables and a Microphone, even the skips and fuck-ups on the tables still sounded live because its in real time, you got to feel the crackle of them records, hear his hands working, its an experience. and them tapes are tailored like a suit mane. So you get to feel when somebody wreck a flow and hear boys in the background goin "MAAAAAN", or like "Southside Holdin' " when you can hear them reminisce on Pat Lemmon from the start. You can FEEL those tapes. Swishahouse mixes, I'll give them props on being able to market the sound and make it more accessible to people, and bringing the modern technology to the genre, so the tapes were more manufactured, the sound quality was more desirable, and had more modern music and radio hits people were into, like on "Before the Kappa 2K" where its got The Rock intro. but alot of them mixes have no feel, its just what sounded great blended with the next song. The FEEL of a Screw Tape, will always trump a Swishahouse Mix to me. I feel like the whole movement got cheated when Screw passed, we was on the brink of music and technology really taking off. Screw could've made 3 N' The Mornin' quality mixes at his fingertips at home. Layering music without using 4 turntables, no skipping on the turntables, auto cues. MAAN. I always imagined what some of them 2001-2008 hits wouldve been like, imagine "Oh Boy" on a Screw in that era. I aint wrote this much on topic since high school😂.

I feel you on the live house party mix that would true to the feeling you get listening to a Screw tape. To me I love the sound of the records, I took a needle and a paper twisted to a cone and made a record player after seeing it on Mr Wizard. You can't have a Jeff or a Bob and call it a Screw tape, a new Screw tape was like a pair of Jordan's in the nineties we couldn't wait until the next one dropped. I've only had one swisha house final chapter 99 slim thug peep the picture flow because a guy from NY I put on Screw thought he brought a Screw so I put him on game, it's slowed down but not Screw Screw is the dj like kid Capri.

If it was around 02-04 we were already getting swishahouse tapes in the 757 from mom and pop stores and flea markets....no true dj screw or suc tapes were available unless you went to the mall (fye,Sam goody)...but you could get that swishahouse mixtape at a gas station,a lil retail store, anywhere 🤷🏿‍♂️
