Just got mine in the mail today, and I love it! It's the perfect general purpose, medium-sized fixed blade. It was literally hair-splitting sharp right out of the box. When you use it to slice food, your knuckles don't hit the table (or cutting board) because of the way it's designed. I bet if the average person bought this one knife, it would serve most of their cutting needs for the rest of their life if they kept it sharp and didn't abuse it.

@TheScotchaholic

It is EDC friendly, for those of us that don't mind carrying mid or large sized fixed blades or folders. TJ's design really lends itself to a comfortable EDC with a more capable blade length. In terms of "mini" fixed blades, the CRKT Minimalist, Boker's Little Dvalin, and Cold Steel's line of sub 3" fixed blades are great if size and weight are big issues.

The steel is tough compared to other high edge retention steels: Elmax, S30V, M390, etc. but much less than 3V, AEBL, 5160, and 8670. It has good edge retention and excellent corrosion resistance. The knife design is a slicer, and it is lightweight. Good point about the heat treatment, as it certainly figures into the toughness. The blade steel and design really appeal to me.

G'day Aaron, man I'm lik'n this one a LOT. I'm a big fan of designs that cater for cutting in the middle of flat surfaces; sure food prep but other applications too. And as a stainless lover, it ticks all the boxes. Hand done with magnacut, it's probably worth the dough, but @ 470 ish AUD, unfortunately its pushing beyond my knife budget. Great to know its out there though, who knows when one might have a windfall, many thanks for showing it. Cheers Duke.

Excellent video/review as always. Any plans to visit Northern Minnesota up near the BWCAW on your travels? If you haven't already that is. I suggest actually going through an outfitter and canoeing/ portaging into the Park. ( this stye of camping is on the more hardcore side of the scale, especially if you choose to do a loop. I prefer to setup a base camp and do day trips from there, as I'm not as young as I used to be. LOL) Permit season has already opened so entry points are far and few between in certain locations and dates so your options are limited. Ely is probably the more popular cities to go through as elevation is relatively flat-ish. Where-as the Gunflint trail would be the other. The elevation changes tend to a bit more dramatic on this end of the park where the highest peak in Minnesota, Eagle Mountain is located. This is considered a day trip at the end of a hiking trail, no canoe needed. There are plenty of car/ RV camping locations if canoe camping isn't logistically plausible/ possible all over the Great North worthy of checking out. Cheers and safe travels to you and the family!

got mine after waiting 2 months and i fucking love it. as someone who loves to cook and be by the ocean, no matter how much i love carbon steel scandi ground knives they just aren't the best fit for most of my applicaitons. I can wear this bad boy outside or inside my waist all day without a care, then when i feel like whipping up some food i can use it at my cutting board just as well as a small petty knife. I'm a saltwater fisherman on the pacific coastline so often times just the misty salty air will be enough to make things rust. I have a SS Mora Kansbol that has been my go to fishing knife for years now but even cutting bait with that and failing to dry and clean it completely will result in some rust forming by the time I get home. I also raise my own rabbits, chickens and quail on my property with the possibility of moving in to squab and the knife handles wonderfully. This thing really does it all for me. I don't really whittle or baton kindling for fires, a lot of times we can't even make fires out here in California, so this really fits the bill. Though there are a couple of places on this knife that seem to strike a firesteel well enough, it would also be very easy to grind those spots just a bit and make it strike amazingly well, for those that are interested. I have not had to resharpen or touch it up yet so I am very impressed with edge retention but can not speak on how well it takes an edge. All I can say is this is my first supersteel and I will have a hard time going back. I love the idea of getting new scales, hardware and leather sheath in the future to make it feel like a whole new knife again.

Very nice review. I’m a fan of the design. The blade shape also reminds me of my Chris Reeve Insingo profile. Was just about to say the Kydex sheath would make for a great IWB option and noticed you thought so as well. What are your thoughts on Magnacut vs. 3V?

This blade would be great in a larger size. same handle (maybe slightly bigger) with the blade scaled up. I say scaled up because making it longer wouldn't give you what you want, the blade would have to be scaled all the way around. 7" blade would be ideal I think.

I really like this knife. It's a design I've always wanted made but never have had it done. I personally got the idea from a cheap Betty Crocker chef knife. Magnacut will 100% change the knife world. I have a custom magnacut blade from Deep Cuts Cutlery and I can say it blew me away. I dropped the edge straight onto granite from 8 inches by accident, minor roll, fixed in no time flat...no chipping, NO CHIPPING! a steel at 64hrc with that edge retention has no business being that tough.

I have come to believe the difference between 800 and 900 rope cuts means little to me, really. Now I dig the idea of a new steel, one that is stronger and sharper longer; or do I. I am afavored (is that a word), with ZDP-189, and S90v, and M390. And 1095 works fine as well. I guess it depends how close to pay day it is?

Seems to me if he puts the holes for the handle on both sides, he could easily make attachments for the set of holes you aren't using for the clip, to hold a ferro rod upside down or a small flashlight, or both.. They should also make a dangler. All of which you could buy when you buy the knife, or as an add on later.

Getting a new better balanced stainless knife steel option will definitely reduce demand for incumbent steels. Especially, other powder metallurgy steels and lc200n Limited change to knife design, ergonomics, blade geometry, maintenance, and sharpening compared to current high end stainless steels. Probably no worse to manufacture, grind, heat treat once dial in as per many current steels. I'm not sure magnacut will be instrumentally creating a new category of blades. Rather, we may be blessed with a better option for many existing knife applications and environments, superseding or reducing demand for other steels.

Awesome knife, they missed the mark on length. Over 8" is not an EDC knife. Love the design but they needed to hit that 7.5" sweet spot for fixed edc. The concept of chef, camp kitchen, bushcraft, edc is very ambitious and the exact knife I have been looking to edc; however front pocketing this fixed blade at 8.5" is a stretch. Oh well the hunt continues...

Hybrid chef/camp knife? Looks like an updated Nesmuk. And yes it is a useful design. Frankly, I think no particular “magic steel” is going to change the world, because there will always be another one coming along. I recall when 440C was hot, when D2 was hot, when 154CM was the “ultimate steel.” I own a Busse made of INFI. This Magnacut sounds great, for the moment.

First, CPM Magnacut is NOT an Uber steel. It's not a higher number named alloy like ATS-55 or S45VN to capitalize on popularity. It genuinely is different. Before Magnacut they didn't know how or want to try to reduce formation of Chromium Carbides. It has HALF the chrome of 440C. What Magnacut is about is balance, not ultimate-do-everything super steel. There are a lot of harder, tougher and harder & tougher alloys. Magnacut gives the most of two opposite things possible AND corrosion resistance. It also encroaches less on the Iron and carbon mix which is basic steel with alloyjng elements to a fourth or more of some alloy mixes. Only ten percent chrome, not a fifth of it being chrome before even putting other elements in. It's not hype, it's a different approach by a guy who is a scientist, not a knife marketer or bladesmith.

Is this a paid promotion or a legit review? The reason i ask is you didn't have, even one small criticism of the knife...so i assume it's a perfect knife!

I don't care what's the steel on a blade, as I care for it's thickness,and more than that the geometries on both the main bevel and the edge, the handle design/ergos and the sheath on fixed blades. All of these factors, are more important to me, than the steel itself. Also, as soon as it's a ballbearing steel on my fixed blade, and any kind of stainless steel on my foodprep knives and folders, then I'm 100% covered. No need for Magnitude, ehmmm excuse me, Magnacut, M390 or any kind of superstainless steels out there. I've used most of them, and that's what my opinion came out to be. PS1 Now, you can eat me alive, for saying my opinion.... we're all overcnsuming marketing monsters... Being logical and human, is out of fashion nowadays PS2 Does he still have large size hands? LOL That's a joke, because we all are bombed with brainwashing from everywhere, in one way or another.

I tend to agree with you but live in saltwater , glad to see these advancements in steel. I also like stuff.

@@zman8340 I live on Crete Island of Greece, never had a rust issue, with any steel. Only a couple of black spots, on my axe, but that's to be expected and they also disappeared, the next time I sharpened the blade! I go fishing with Vicotrinox and Moras, never had any damage, any spots or rust either. None issue with any knife. It's mainly because we like to get new stuff. We all do, Richer who doesn't lol

@@greekveteran2715 I live on the Gulf of Mexico I could show a mora rusted to bits . Trust me I’ve tried them all here . I also run a charter fishing business and blades take a beating .

Do you prefer thickness for perceived durability, or for batoning purposes? It was illuminating to me to learn that thick doesnt mean tough. For example, a hard steel file will easily break when dropped on concrete, even though it's relatively thick. A tough steel/heat treat is most important to ME, but thats just my opinion for a hard-use knife

@@randomstranger2472 You're right! thinner blades have elasticity, that thicker ones lack. I should have written thiness of the blade! I don't know of anybody, who use his knife to split logs, Here in Greece, we used axes since the ancient times.We mustn't fall into that marketing traps! The only time someone needs a thick knife, or a superstainless steel, it's the time that he is going to get fooled from marketing tricks, that he NEEDS it, or when someone is a collector, where it still is more of a fetish, rather than a real necessity.

More knife makers need to use the pay later or overtime method like sizzle or PayPal pay every few weeks this sends me over the edge every time and usually only buy this way now. This way the wife doesn’t really know. Lol.

By the time our BK-16s fall apart everybody will have a magnacut option, and a new super steel will be on the horizon.... or maybe working lightsabers?

Putting a blade in dirt, sand, edge down on rocks, etc is exactly the same as letting the chainsaw blade run into the ground...

@@josephlilley9249 how is it not the same? Your are putting what was a once sharp edge into the earth from which it will come out dull. As rock sharpens Steel it will also dull it. Exactly the same thing happens to a chain blade. Your comment is foolish.
@josephlilley9249
@josephlilley9249 2 жыл бұрын
It's not the same bc a chainsaw is not a knife. Also if you have ever used a chainsaw and you run it into rocks it's going to kick back up at you and possibly cut you very badly, a knife doesn't do that. But like I said I got what you were saying. Either way I'm not going to get personal saying your foolish and shit and I'm not going to argue on KZbin. Have a good day buddy.

@@josephlilley9249 still a foolish comment. you realize a chainsaw blade has hardened steel blades, like mini knives all over the chain? that's what cuts and goes dull when you contact earth, then you have to spend hours filing all the teeth back in shape. You are literally making yourself look dumb at this point trying to talk about kickback, you can't use it as a scapegoat to your pathetic answer.
