Legendary Miami Hurricanes running back and two time national champion Melvin Bratton explains what a championship culture looked like with the Canes in the 1980’s. Melvin and fellow standout running back Alonzo Highsmith had opportunities to play at any top program in America, but they chose to stay home in South Florida to win championships in their own backyard. The decision paid off as they both went on to win championships in Coral Gables. Bratton discussed their team mentality of wanting to fight any outsiders who picked a fight with the group. He described it as a true brotherhood.
Host Alex Donno and guest Bruce Warner interview Bratton about his time in Miami and what it was like playing for legends Howard Schnellenberger and Jimmy Johnson. Bratton explained why he believes in current Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal. Bratton tells the infamous story about waking up Brian Bosworth in the middle of the night to talk trash. He describes his bitter-sweet final game at Miami, where he was part of a national championship victory but also suffered a knee injury that affected his NFL career.

The culture that Melvin talked about can not exist in sports today, with maybe the exception of hockey. There are too many prima donas, kids worried about their 'stars', and their self inspired belief that they're entitled and somehow better than the next. The new 'team' begins with "I". Manny knew it and that's why the 'turnover chain' came into existence. A tangible, instant gratification, in game participation trophy. An individual goal. The guys back in the day had bigger goals... like championships, and that's what they went hunting for. Championships were their goal and destiny. They ate, slept, practiced, and played for and towards it. If Mario can inspire that attitude and bring that back to The U... shit, we could add several more trophies to the case. It's ALL about The U, baby! Go 'Canes! 🙌

Saw Bratton take one of the hardest hits ever in the Swamp in, I believe, 1986. I think it was Jarvis Williams of UF who targeted him before there was a targeting rule. UM beat UF pretty bad that day.
