I like to think Mirabel didn’t get a door or power because the house is hers, not just a door or room, which is why she is the one who gets along best with the house and why she saves it, and her “power” is keeping the family together, which is arguably more important than any of the family members powers since without her, they fall apart and lose their powers

Abuela swore to herself never to come back to where she lost her husband and instead of sending her daughter or Luisa to look after Mirabel (like she did the beginning) She climbed a mountain to apologize. Also Bruno is best boy for getting the courage to confront abuela again for Mirabel even though Mirabel already healed her heart.

I think forgiveness is necessary for the individual to give. It doesn't matter if the other person apologizes or not. Forgivess is more for your sake than for their sake. Forgiveness is letting go of the pain. However, there is a difference between forgiving and trusting. Forgiveness doesn't have to be earned because it's a gift for yourself and, if they accept it, it's a gift for the other person, too. Trust is something that is earned. You can forgive someone without trusting them. It depends on the situation.

I feel like I relate with Mirabel. Sometimes, I feel like I don't quite fit in. She's also goofy, energetic, and the way she interacts with Antonio, she's more like a big sister to him than a cousin. Being a big sister is one of the attributes that I'm most proud of in myself.

I'd argue Mirabel's act of heroism isn't her forgiveness of her Abuela, but rather the saving of the entire Encanto (the Encanto includes more than just her family home, it's also the surrounding land and village as well, as shown and stated in the movie), much in a similar way to Mulan saving the whole of China.

If you recall the whole reason the Encanto and magic and everything formed was because the Abuela wanted protection for her, her family, and the villagers from those who drove them out of their previous home and killed her husband and everything, and as we see with the magic faded the Encanto starts cracking and breaking apart, likely leaving them vulnerable to the attacks they were originally protected from, among other things. As such, by restoring the magic to her home she heals the Encanto and thus returns the protection to the village, thus saving the village.

Well in German it's spelled Kolumbien... But also take into account that Colombia's etymology derives from "Cristobal Colón" hence Colombia in Spanish. In English, the name is Christopher Columbus and the name Columbia follows the same logic. South Carolina's capital is Columbia and is named after Columbus. So to be absolutely fair, the right name in English for the country should be Columbia. Colombia doesn't make sense in that language. The Central America thing was a big miss, though

As a Colombian , the movie was very special and sentimental for me specially with all the music and mentions of our foods and flowers and such. You keep forgetting one very important aspect of being a Disney princess; Having a song! Literally every one of the Disney princess movies have been a musical except for Brave but even Merida had a song playing in the background of her movie. The songs always have the same formula too, the girl sings about wanting more to life then what she currently has, sometimes the song is a duet but it’s still the same. I’m Wishing and Someday My Prince Will Come, A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes, Once Upon A Dream, Part Of Your World, Belle, A Whole New World, Just Around The Riverbend (and Colors Of The Wind), I’m Almost There, When Will My Life Begin, Touch The Sky, (For the First Time In Forever, Let It Go), How Far I’ll Go. Mirabel’s Waiting On A Miracle just fits right in with the group, and you can even go further and include both her sister’s songs as well. You know who doesn’t have a song? Raya. Not a single song with lyrics throughout that entire movie. Big mistake on Disney’s part if you ask me, the movie could’ve been much more enjoyable if it was a musical. I just think it was pretty boring a lot of times and the exposition could’ve been way more interesting if it was sung, since there was so much exposition to get through in order to understand the plot.

It may be too boring for Raya for not being musical in terms of songs, but i think writers of the movie focuses on being serious throughout the adventure and only uses background scores. the movie has two songs though but never sang by Raya herself, Lead the Way and Trust. I think Lead the Way may somehow associate to her as her I Want Song due to it focuses on her journey. And also Merida from Brave may have her song Touch th Sky, but Merida herself also never sung any song throughout her movie, I guess Merida and Raya has the same vibes.

The reason she doesn't "Receive a gift" in the first place is because she is a gift. The gifts are given to the family members that are in need of Them. So the magic knows she is different and she will help people without the assistance of powers. Now for the reason the vision shows her and her sister needing to make amens. With her seemingly perfect sister not even realizing that she has a problem. The vision is showing her the path she needs to take to learn what the family and others are in need of. With the last being that alma, she's putting to much value on the gifts and loosing sight of those close to her. When the house and gifts are gone the split in the mountain opens and leads back to where it all started. This is where alma realizes where she's went wrong and gives mirabel the opportunity to forgive her and show her what's important. When Alma realizes that it isn't the powers that makes her family special that it is the family themselves. In doing so mirabel basically becomes like the magic and she provides what the family needs most Unity. That's what I think anyway. So strong case for princessness.

Biased Colombian here. I loved this movie because the big obstacle of it is not a dragon or an evil witch, it's the obstacles that we have in real life, the expectations of our family and how trauma can shape us into not the greatest but we still love each other, and we can understand how we fail and grow. The Madrigals are happy, but they are flawed and Mirabel found those flaws and inspired change. This is so relatable and hopeful it makes me tear up. I loved this movie so much.

Personally, I think that if the guidelines in place actually mean anything, there are too many edge case "fulfillments" for Mirabel to be included. The born royal requirement doesn't really make sense for the reason mentioned: in Colombia, the status of the Madrigals wouldn't really equate to royalty. As you stated, the "significant act of heroism" criterion is only really there for Mulan, meaning Mulan is the only point of comparison we have for it. While I agree that Mirabel making up with her grandmother is a significant moment of character development for both characters, I don't think it stacks up compared to Mulan's achievements. In my opinion, Mirabel falls more in line with Alice in terms of relationship with the Disney Princess franchise. While not an official member of the lineup and not meeting the "requirements" in place, Alice is still sometimes included with the rest of the princesses (most notably in Kingdom Hearts).

It's nice to know that someone else in these comments sees this question for what it is, instead of what they want it to be. Does Mirabel qualify as a Disney Princess? No. Pocahontas fits more than Mirabel. Mirabel accomplished, what? Keeping her family together in an attempt to restore a magic house. Sentimental and determined, but not heroic. And don't even try with that "forgiveness is the hardest thing you can do, so she was being heroic" nonsense; in both the practical and classical sense that doesn't hold water. Pocahontas was the daughter of a village chieftain, but the argument of wether or not she qualifies as royalty is a mute one; she qualifies under heroism. Pocahontas not only kept a man from being murdered (John Smith) but she singlehandedly stopped a brutal war between her tribesmen and the settlers barely before it began, actually placing her life on the line to achieve both goals. Saving a family home and forgiving your disapproving mother is not in the same league as stopping both a war and an unwarranted execution by shielding a victim with your own skull. Pocahontas is much closer than Mirabel to Mulan's achievements: 1) Risked great dishonor for herself by taking her father's armor and sword to go in his stead. 2) Risked extreme dishonor to her family for being a girl masquerading as the son of an honored military veteran. 3) Risked execution by the empire for her impersonation and enlistment in the Imperial army. 4) Went against the ruthless and cunning Hun army. And won through courage and bold action. 5) Defeated in single combat the Hun warlord that the best warrior in the Imperial army couldn't. 6) Saved the life of the Emperor, and thereby a nation. 🎶One of these three is not like the others.🎶 Btw, because for some reason people regularly try and claim that when someone disagrees with them on something that means that disagree-r is taking the opposite stance, that is not what this is. Mirabel is perfectly fine as a character, but heroism is not the same as doing something difficult. Heroism has many aspects beyond simply trying to do what one believes is right or overcoming adversity. Alice getting through Wonderland was difficult. It was tough for Wendy to survive a mermaid murder attempt and stand up to (though not actually directly oppose) Captain Hook. Aurora, an actual born princess, survived a potent curse from possibly the most powerful evil spellcaster (unless you count genie Jafar; I don't) in all of Disney's history. That is an accomplishment in itself. But none of these things are heroic. They're mostly just an attempt at survival.

The disney princesses TM themselves don’t fulfill the Official -guidelines- Requirements. It’s all a marketing scheme. So it all gets back to whether or not Enchanto makes enough box office money for them-but the naming of the film is In-Line with how Disney’s been naming Potential Princess Films (Tangled, Brave, Frozen, Moana (which translates to “ocean”))

Before watching this, I just realized, technically you could actually argue the Madrigal family is the "royal family" of their town. Everyone puts a lot of importance into the Madrigals specifically, and it's a town wide event when a new child gets a miracle. And I'm pretty sure Abuela is literally the magistrate of the town, so, technically Mirabel could be considered an actual princess of sorts.

@@L3onking I just saw the movie and in the end credits I don't remember seeing a new door with her on it, just the previous doors we saw in the original _casita_ before being demolished. In many ways it is implied by the new front door that the whole house is hers, which I'm taking to mean that she's meant to become the new matriarch of her family in time. The words her grandmother and Maribel exchanged at the river imply that her grandmother sees her now as her shoulder to lay on, which was missing ever since Pedro had been killed. But, that's just my take on the last part of the movie.

We love Encanto in my house. We went to the movies twice to see it. My daughter keeps asking for it. She's convinced we're lying that it's not on Disney+ yet haha. We listen to the soundtrack often. I think if she does skate the requirements and become an official Disney princess, it will be more for the sake of diversity than actually fitting the requirements. It's possible some requirements may start to change a little to fit more types of princesses. Who knows. But, if she didn't become one, I wouldn't necessarily be surprised either, in the sense that I don't think she meets all the requirements in a conventional way. You kinda have to reach for her to meet them. Either way, we will be buying the movie for sure!

The royal part I agree, their village seems to be cut off the world pretty good, so it is their own "country" (there is no doubt though that in the sequel, the cracks that were created through the destruction of the house is letting something new in). And I totally agree, that forgivness is something that qualifies you as a Disney Princess. Does she have an actual existing animal sidekick? No. But the idea of the house being her sidekick and her trying to save her "sidekick" along her family is kind of cool.

Meg Pushing Hercules out of the way for the stone column and sacrificing herself (she literally died) is what I call a Significant act of Heroism. Also Hercules is the son of a king (Zeus), So Meg should also match the marrying requirement (Also human female lead, no sequel, her and Hercules both are friends with Pegasus). There's another factor though that might help Mirabel. The disney princess brand is not as diverse as it should be. It is in their best interest to make it more diverse. This could help Mirabel become one even if her royal ranking is a little iffy, but like another commenter said, I do think they are moving away from the Disney princess brand.

TL;DR: About half the Official Disney Princesses TM don’t actually have animal sidekicks. It’s a later-ish rule before it got consistently applied Funnily enough, Belle doesn’t have a true animal sidekick (Chip’s her sidekick but he’s a boy-turned-enchanted teacup), and Aurora is a Title Character but NOT the Female Lead (which is shared between the Three Fairies) Like, Belle has a horse…who is a horse. He’s not an animal sidekick. And getting extra nitpicky, technically Snow White and Aurora don’t have animal sidekicks either-they just summon a hoard of wildlife to do their bidding. The first princess to have an actual Animal Sidekick TM is actually Cinderella, then Ariel, then Jasmine-onward (but not Belle; I can never remember who came first, Belle or Jasmine.) (Which, snubbing aside-Megara, Jane, and Kida technically don’t have Animal Sidekicks, either; although Hercules and Tarzan do. Milo does not (no Mole, you do NOT count.)) And Olaf is kinda like Chip-NOT an animal sidekick, but he is Anna’s and Elsa’s sidekick. (And like Tarzan and Hercules, Kristoff has Sven.)

Philippe is there as her horse and doesn't offer anything new except being her faithful horse as opposed to Maximus from Tangled who I feel qualifies as an animal sidekick for Eugene. Regarding Chip, I don't see him as Belle's sidekick. The enchanted staff as a whole is more her friends and sidekicks than simply Chip. It's similar to the relationship Cinderella has with her animal friends.

I'm assuming you meant you *can't* picture a Disney Princess with glasses, and therein lies the reason Disney would be smart to make Mirabel an official princess. There are no Colombian (or South American) princesses, or any with differentiating characteristics like glasses, or autism, or a disability (like hearing impaired or lacking ability to walk...although perhaps you could count Mirabel into THAT category too as she doesn't have magical abilities and is considered somewhat disabled, but I digress). Kids who can personally identify with a Disney princess are a LOT more likely to buy (or beg their parents to buy) that merchandise. However, I will say I feel this movie could potentially become as popular as Frozen. Not likely, but one with the most potential for this exact reason-- Mirabel is the heroine Disney's target audience can identify with. Just as Black Panther, which was an amazing movie in its own right, became an emblem of what diversity in superhero movies can and should look like. It was a great movie, but also gave millions of kids someone they could look up to that they related to (Rest in Power Our King Chadwick Boseman).

I do hope she becomes a Disney Princess due to the fact that she is an ordinary female character who wears glasses; the image of a princess shouldn't always be the so called perfect, thin, non glasses wearing female characters. It sends the wrong message in my opinion; I personally don't get the obsession with wanting to be a princess, but I feel if people want to be one they should have a very diverse collection of individuals to model after. I agree that Mirabel will become the newest Disney Princess. I saw the movie in November 2021, and it was honestly the best thing I ever saw, especially as a birthday treat since I got to see it the day after it premiered in theaters, on my birthday! Mirabel definitely allows for the idea of a Disney Princess to not necessarily be this perfect person. The beauty that Mirabel is someone who isn’t perfect, and is more down to earth, it makes her the most natural Disney Princess, if that makes sense. She also wears glasses which I find to be very nice, since I wear glasses. She doesn’t have a crazy power, she doesn’t have an insane battle or role to fit in and do for the world, she’s simply a member of her family wanting the best for everyone by saving the magic. And as you said, she forgave her grandmother even if she lashed out at her. Forgiveness is a strong thing, and while it’s not easy at first, it’ll eventually come to people from those that have a good heart and knows that the person meant well, even if how or what they said didn’t come out right.
