Will new boys SURVIVE the Championship?

Portsmouth, Derby County and Oxford United are the new boys in the EFL Championship having just been promoted from League One. How many of the three will still be in the division in one years time though? Here's a look at the three clubs just two weeks out from kick-off!

I found a crazy statistic about these three clubs. The last time a newly-promoted club from the 3rd tier of English football ended up getting promoted again but as champions in the 2nd tier was in the 1986/87 season with Derby County achieving that feat, the second last occasion was with Oxford United in the 1984/85 season. To make it clear, Portsmouth has not done that, Derby County finished 3rd in the 1985/86 League Division Three and got promoted due to no playoffs back then and won League Division Two in the 1986/87 season. With Oxford United, they actually won back-to-back titles in the 3rd tier and the 2nd tier at that time. Back then, the second division only had 22 teams. I think it's very unlikely for that to happen but this is the Championship, who knows.....

Derby were in the Championship in the covid season with no fans present so cannot be compared to the season coming up. Rooney was learning the ropes along with Rosenoir and threat of going out of business due to administration. Agree Pompey have a good chance of staying up, Oxford possibly but cannot compare to the 20/21 season when they were both in league 1.

Warne has been backed since being hired,, he's got the players he wanted and this transfer window he's gotten the players he wanted for this season. No excuses really, should be mid table with the budget he's been given and I think we will albeit after a slow start but improving as the season gets going. Portsmouth will be fine in my opinion,, they've gone for quality over quantity and MUrphy is a top signing in my opinion,, top half finish. Oxford to do a Rotherham personally but hoping they stay up.

Pompey still have a few players to bring in yet with another new signing coming through the doors today in Jacob Farrell, a young 21yr old LB with bags of potential and according to reports the best LB in the Australian league for the last couple of seasons, defence wise we are fairly strong with most having played in the championship before, up front we have two very capable strikers in Bishop and Yengi and on the wings we have bags of talent in the likes of Paddy lane, Callum Lang, Josh Murphy and have just signed Silvera on loan for the season, only area I'd say we really need to strengthen is centre mid although we do have Marlon Pack there who's played most of his football at this level and a very good up and coming player in Owen Moxon but we are short of numbers there so I'd expect a couple of centre mids coming in before the start of the season. I'm confident we have a team able to compete for a mid table finish maybe higher depending on who else we bring in, as for Oxford I think they'll surprise a few people everyone has written them off but in Branagan they have one of the stand out midfield players from last year and I think they'll stay up just, Derby I think will struggle a little under Warne as I really don't rate him at this level, he's a great league one manager but has constantly struggled in this league with Rotherham, having said that he has more resources available to him at Derby so a tough one to call really. Also there are a fair few teams in this league who I'd say are worse so going to be an interesting season for sure.

Portsmouth will be fine and will achieve a mid-table finish at least. Oxford may struggle. A question mark hangs over Derby. I'd back them to stay up but could easily be persuaded otherwise by a poor start to the season. COYG!

💚⚽️💚All three will find it tough. The step up is huge in quality as we found out last year. Pompey and Derby might just survive but I fear for Oxford on a low budget. Blackburn without Sammie S and Wednesday are my tips to go down with them. If it goes pear shaped with Argyle under Wayne, then we will be in the mix for sure💚⚽️💚

Home form and atmosphere should give Pompey and Derby an advantage. Oxford maybe will be better off in that respect when they get their new stadium, not sure when that is expected. Warne has a point to prove at this level and now he has virtually got all his own players can have no excuses, Rotherham was a total different story with no pressure in comparison. Impressed with Pompey manager, he has done a great job so far. In answer to your question, all 3 have a chance of staying up but can only see 2. Form of Plymouth, Wednesday and possibly Stoke or QPR could make the difference. Doubt a repeat of your beloved Ipswich will happen anyway!

Preseason isn't about results it's about fitness and tactics yes Chesterfield beat us 4.0 but we knocked them out the cup.

Sorry Pompey, I think,but hope I am wrong, that Pompey will struggle this season. The owners don't want to spend money getting decent players and expect the management and recruitment staff to get free transfers, young unproven players, and loans. This may have worked in L1 but won't work in the championship. When the owners took over they said they would put money into development of Fratton Park and other facilities but they they would spend very little on players and the team would have to be self sufficient. That is exactly what they are doing and as the recruitment staff had very little money to start with, they have done a great job getting the success they have had, Now is the time for the owners to put in some decent money into the team instead of just spending millions on trying to turn Fratton Park into an entertainment centre and less of a football club. Time will tell.

As a Pompey fan right now we’re not good enough to stay up. Severe lack of depth in midfield and not a lot of experience outside of pack at this level. I’ll try to be positive always and enjoy it as this has been a long time coming but do worry it could be an all to short story for us in the championship. Derby best equipped to survive last season and again this season. Oxford will surprise a few if they can get going, depends which buckingham Oxford turn up.

Think Portsmouth will get a reasonably comfortable 18th-15th finish, their home form will keep them comfortable. Think both Derby and Oxford will drop with either Plymouth or Blackburn. Nowhere near enough quality in that Oxford side and Derby look to be building a squad for relegation with the master of relegation in Paul Warne. Strange one

Think Pompey will struggle along with Oxford. Derby may start slow with so many new players but they have recruited well and should make top half of all goes well. Derby should have won league 1 last year but 2 late goals in the games v Pompey were the difference that’s it in a nutshell.

Pompey were the best team in that league by a mile the reason pompey won it is because they never new they were beaten they always found away to win games they never lost to a top 6 side ether Also the injury pompey had aswell there captain out for a few months top scorer put for about a month and about 15 more than that

It was a friendly, I watched it on rams tv and Chesterfield took it a lot more seriously than us...all you could hear was paul cook all match.. we have a lot of new players and injuries coming back, I wouldn't read too much into it tbf.
