Steel toe boots saved me one time, I was wearing waterproof ones while trudging through the swamp and I stepped on a snapping turtle. It chomped down on my foot and even managed to dent the metal insert. Had I been wearing regular shoes I'd have lost at least two of my toes.

FYI, one of the main reasons for the steel toes is so if you do drop something crazy heavy it has a good chance of slicing off your toes cleanly so they can be reattached properly instead of squished by w/e was dropped and losing them for good.

Steel toed boots are meant for people that work with heavy weights. If you drop a heavy weight on your foot they’re meant to chop your toes off so that they can be reattached instead of crushed by the weight.

Yeah, steel toes are neat, unless something super heavy falls on them. Then it can cut your fingers clean off (much worse than crushed foot imho - that can at least heal up). Also when splitting you're more likely to hit your femur. That's why you should allways stand with a bit spread legs.

Ironically safety toe boots are actually designed to cut off your toes if the weight dropped on them exceeds what they were built to handle. This is so the person wearing them can get away in case they're still in danger. Also if you're going to be using a chainsaw, there are special boots you can get to withstand chainsaws.

Fun fact: Steel toe boots are indeed made with protection from drops in mind, but the main use is in the case of what would normally crush and destroy a persons toes, in steel toe boots they will cut the toes off so they can be reattached because it's easier than repairing a crushed toe.

Working in heavy construction for 20 years I have seen many guys get hurt when heavy items were dropped on their foot even when they had on steel toe boots. Iron workers refuse to wear them.
