I decided to ask to chatGPT itself and it replied this: As a language model, my main goal is to assist software developers in their work by providing them with relevant information, suggestions and solutions. I can automate some of the repetitive and mundane tasks, but I am not designed to replace software developers. It's important to note that while I can write code, I am not able to understand the context, the requirements, the business logic or the user interaction that a software developer should be aware of when developing software. Moreover, software development is a complex process that involves not just writing code but also problem-solving, critical thinking, design, and communication with other members of the team. The content writing is pretty impressive too! I think this will be a great tool in helping developers much like how we use stackoverflow/tutorials/google etc. Where we can get the answer or close to the answer pretty quickly. This is one of those rare moments where a software is created that has such a high ceiling for where it could be taken. A lot of developers that think it'll replace you are not understadning that not every suggestion its giving out right now is even correct. It gives very through suggestions that look correct, and also even gives suggestions that aren't even in the documentation of some products. But what it has the potential to do is well beyond just "writing code" for people. This is a tool that can vastly help to increase the speed in which people are able to learning how to code properly. I threw in all kinds of questions at it from various different languages as well as different infrastructure questions and it was giving me full detailed steps of where I can go and start. A lot of problems we limit as developers is not being able to ask the right questions, and while this tool still needs you to do that, it makes it easier for you to get to that direction. I asked it just for fun to write me a script that connects to Alexa and outputs a song from youtube and it was able to spit me out a script that was able to do that, and even pulled a library from open source to get it to work. I've asked it questions in relation to terraform, aws, design patterns in various languages, suggestions to go about github actions, book recommendations, and it was able to at least start me from somewhere. The questions are not always correct, but it gives you the ability to be able to be productive. For newer developers, this is probably the most game changing tool that I've ever seen on the market, even more so because the examples you are likely to ask are going to be snippets that are very well understood to make. If you have a serious desire to learn how to learn to do this job, this is a tool that 10000% is going to help you get there. Finally, I can also see this as a game changing tool to get you started in templating out code that people hate to write. I also asked it to spit me out an HTML and CSS template of a simple resume template to get me started, and it was able to do it, no colors were added, but all the padding was added between texts, listing bullets were removed, the elements were centered on the page, certain sections were even bolded for me. I can see this being a tool where if you really know your shit around a language to describe what you want it will be able to get you started somewhere.

You still need a developer to do the thinking. Just like we don't use punch cards anymore and have nice IDEs that can do code completion, this will free up some more cognitive resources. At best it can suggest things for you that others have tried in similar situations, like the KZbin recommender system, but it will never be able to think for you. There might be some niche situations where a person might be replaced. One thing these state of the art models can do really well though is translating natural language to code, or code to code. So if you want a simple translation of say, Java to COBOL knowing nothing of the latter, some of these models can do it automatically with a lot of precision. But once your program gets a bit more complex (say you need to change software architecture to make something run in another language) you won't be able to turn to AI (yet).

Interesting reply from ChatGPT "herself" on the same Question... "It's unlikely that programmers will become obsolete as a result of developments in natural language processing or AI technology. While it's true that AI and natural language processing technologies like ChatGPT can automate certain tasks that were previously done by humans, it's important to remember that these technologies are still limited in what they can do. For example, ChatGPT is a powerful tool for generating text based on a given prompt, but it still requires a human to provide that prompt and to interpret the output. Even if all "code" is written and reviewed entirely by AI there will still be programmers. The chatGPT method of AI coding takes natural human language and turns it into code. This method works well for simple tasks. But for complicated tasks such as creating a large commercial application, comunication in English (or other human languages) will be too inefficient and vague. This in my mind will lead us into a world where "programming" is the use of modified human languages made specifically for more efficient communication with AI, kind of like a framework. I think we will see some of these "frameworks" become specialized as well, one AI framework is optimized for websites, another for video games and so on, just like we have in current programming. The more I think about it, the more it seems like AI is just another additional abstraction away from 1s and 0s and will only serve to make the job of programming easier, not reduce the demand for the programmers themselves. Then again I might just be in denial haha, would love to get other peoples thoughts on this take.

Definitely denial 😂 But good answer. I wouldn’t be surprised if in 5 years you can say to an AI, “build me an app that does X” and it builds it directly in assembly in less than 30 seconds. Runs faster and cleaner than human output. Then you say to your AI, OK great but add feature Y. And it does. Rinse and repeat. Programming is all about managing complexity and humans basically suck at that. To AI, it will be a walk in the park. You could even update your app on the fly at any time just by requesting a new feature or other improvement. Programs thus become dynamic, morphing all the time to suit their user. OK, maybe 7 years for the last bit. But 5 years or 7, the writing is absolutely on the wall and it spells: “AI will eat everything!”.

When the automobile started rolling out of factories, horse and buggy manufacturers published on the front page of the New York Times all the reasons why the automobile will not replace the reliability of the horse and buggy! It's a grave error to think your job is so important that it cannot be replaced. I think the overwhelming majority of programmers have about five to seven years left. The very best may have 10 but I wouldn't bet on it being any longer than that.

What I'd really like to know is that how does it perform with a bigger code base? If we just let it scan all the code and assume that the code is well commented, could we simply tell it to - for example - create a new endpoint to an existing web app that fulfills an actual business requirement? Of course it should follow our conventions, best security practices and whatnot.

Here’s my take: AI will replace those who believe it will You can’t be replaced as a human being who can think freely and imagine new things. The greatest companies on Earth came from vision and creativity. If you’re a product-driven dev and you understand the business need you’re solving for, you’ll become even more valuable. Domain knowledge will increase your value substantially. I’ve seen many people implement simple Todo apps with ChatGPT because it’s trained on so much open source data where everyone and their mother has created one. Ask it to develop some complex UIs that are fault tolerant and full of fallbacks to ensure you don’t hit error boundaries and it fails miserably. Let’s also remember that as a business, do you want ChatGPT reinforcing its dataset with your proprietary business logic to solve a problem you’re solving to make money? Likely not. If everyone is using the same API for their business, is any business really building any moat? Not at all. There’s plenty of time before we get replaced and when that happens, a lot of other stuff will also change drastically. I’m not worried. I’m informed, will continue to follow through with the advancements, and find a way to leverage this so I can increase my market value; not decrease it.

I see OpenAI as a great tool to use for the future. Software development is much more than just writing code. While ChatGPT may be impressive in assisting with writing functions or boiler plate code, its still pretty much a search engine in my view. You ask it a question, it returns responses with high rated values stored from a database of information. When the system understands its own logic and syntax errors and can explain what it did wrong then worry...lol.

Bruh why are people in this comment section so lost. Are you really comparing this to a search engine? For real? Seach engines don't analyze the context and respond based on that. They can't admit mistakes. If you can't give search engine a complex situation and expect a dynamic resolution. You are talking about admitting mistakes? Well yesterday i told it to write a code for men and I found out there are 2 deprecated lines of code as it didn't knew that I wanted solution for a chrome browser version higher than 28. So I told it that it's using deprecated code, it analyzed for a secone and then admitted that it's true and then restructured the code eliminating those lines and prividing a new solution. Infact, you can tell it write a code for you and then ask it to explain the logic behind that and it will telll you.

Right now just on my own progress can be challenging, so do you think ChatGPT might actually be a very useful too for someone like me? And if so, then instead of threatening developer jobs, might ChatGPT actually free up those same developers to realize their own visions?

I am not yet a developer but a student who is now in his second year in a Bachelor in IT (Specialization Software development). The thing with chatgpt is that it gives you the code but if you copy and paste it in you're code or just trying to paste in a new project it will 70% of the time NOT work. It will maybe create a time management app but you still need to understand the code because just pasting it like i said will not work most of the time with chatgpt. I tried it for my project in C# and most of the times it does not even work since my project was a little bit advanced compared to like a management app. But sometimes I adjust the code that chatgpt gives me and it does work but that's just because I understand the code it gives me . Sorry english is not my first language but I hope I helped you

This tool is great and I'm amazed by what it can do. Like i needed to do something very specific - write me a code in kendo UI that allows to drag and drop from grid onto a tree view. Wow i was amazed. Obv it needed some tweaking but amazing starting point without having to spend a lot of time googling around. It produced the answer in react which i needed and google returned some jQuery articles on this subject. So i think it will definitely replace basic programming and but you still need to be software engineer to design the system, build little blocks, connect them together and overall you need to know what chatGPT is actually writing so you can connect it together, improve it etc. I just feel like because of it a large number of basic coders will actually go. That's my fear now after using chatGPT almost everyday now.

There's still a lot of bugs in the code it generates, so we're safe for now. But it will get better. What will get replaced are programming languages, or at least our ability to quickly fix its bugs. In other words, we will have to learn how to promp it correctly to tweak and fix things in the more complex programs it generates, which is basically programming with natural language, instead of the languages we currently use. But the need to understand project requirements and to translate that into an application by using logic to determine the correct instructions to give to the machine (even if its with natural language) will remain for some time. So we're good for now.

Money will become useless, so dont worry about losing your job, I am excited as this might make us re evaluate life and realise that money (man made papers) is not the point of life and we will enjoy our lives more. There is a huge gap between an IDE and tech as chatGPT. I wish, one could just compare anything with anything and draw a valid conclusion. If one can build me a virtual programmer which I can easily implement into my dev cycle and have safety processes which will make sure it won't just slide in any malicious or bad code into my codebase, then I would just need fewer devs as without chatGPT-like tech.

I think it’ll lower the need in the overall field, but it won’t kill the need for developers for a decade. I’d be a bit more afraid for designers, as some of the digital design pieces created are pretty good, and originally going to school for design it does have set rules, measurements, accessibility limitations in bigger companies (sanitized to the point of being product art vs. design work…). Also: don’t forget too, it’s human nature to create new jobs for the next level of difficulty once we’ve trivialized a once tedious task…

I think everyone who cares knows all of this... but what we also know is that if you play with chatGPT's code extensively and *recursively* it does a fairly decent job of cranking out a viable solution to the problems it can understand. What we all also know is, this is just the beginning. I can forsee all sorts of possibilities of intelligent coder assistants. Think in terms of telling the machine to do the drudgery of piecing together your architecture while you kept your mind focused on the big picture. Think in terms of self modifying code. Think of giving it your database schema and telling it the kind of queries to write for you. This is huge. This won't put developers out of work, but it will change the nature of development from the ground up. Development is already starting to split into two groups, coders and code developers. Things, they are a'changing!

What if these developments in AI simply force us to innovate more and create more sophisticated and impressive software that wouldn’t have been conceivable before. For instance, when computers were first invented, making ping pong game or a basic calculator was pretty impressive and probably required a lot of effort from many people. Nowadays, sure you can code a calculator from scratch with the latest technology and manipulate the bits just like they did before, but you can also import a whole javascript library that would do it for you, even with a nice UI if you want. What I’m saying is, as technology develops and makes our current work feel obsolete, it opens up doors to develop more complicated things that require even more people. The best example I can think of right now is Microsoft flight simulator, they used AI with Bing maps to allow you to fly across a realistic representation of the entire earth. I understand that this is a niche but my point is, this would never be possible without AI to begin with. If a company replaces their developers with AI, it means that this company’s product is so trivial that an AI can do it. These type of companies will not stand for long. I am 99% sure that these AI developments will drive innovation and create way more jobs than we think.

I have seen people across different industries and careers use it. Whether we like it or not, this tool will eventually replace software engineers. I don't think it will replace all but the demand for software engineers will decline and more than likely so will the cost companies are willing to pay. The tool is on the outside and in a research phase but when OpenAI is able to commercialize and allow someway for companies to deploy their own ChatGPT service in their enterprise environment, things will change. Imagine this tool being deployed at your company and rather than just generating generic code, it generates codes more intelligently considering t your company codebase, coding style, internal tools/services, etc… Companies will realize that we can hire less developers and pay them a little less since the computer is doing more work. Things will continue to advance. I highly suggest that people develop additional skills that they can make them money, whether thats trading, cooking, content creation, etc… something…maybe even pick up a trade…looks like software engineers and white collar workers alike will be heavily displaced before blue collar workers.
