Landlocked Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland, an internationally unrecognized region in the Horn of Africa that is only recognized as part of Somalia. Many fear that Ethiopia's deal with Somaliland might destabilize the Horn of Africa. To discuss this issue host Haydé Adams is joined by senior editor of VOA Somali Harun Maruf, PHD fellow at the Center for Constitutional Democracy at Indiana University Alemayehu Fentaw Weldemariam and legal expert Guleid Ahmed Jama, who is joining from Hargeisa in Somaliland .

It's a crime that the AU still didn't re-recognise Somaliland. But this time the AU must stand with Ethiopia and support Somaliland's re-recognition now!

At the end of every story, the truth will prevail. No matter how overwhelming the lie, the truth will eventually come out. Likewise, no matter how many lies are spread about Somaliland, the truth is getting closer. Somaliland will be victorious, God willing

Wow, these VOA journalists don’t even do a simple fact check now days. Ethiopia is already using the port of Berbera and they own 19% shares. The issue here is on the MOU it says Ethiopia will lease 20 km of land in the coast of Lughaya not far from Berbera port and built their own commercial/military port in return for some 15% of Ethiopia Airlines and after evaluating Somalialand maybe maybe a recognition. So VOA please do your research before reading the news.

The Republic of Somaliland has never signed away its sovereign to Somalia. The act of union between Somaliland and Somalia never legally happened nor was it ratified by both parliaments in 1960.

It's the time that United Nations member state and global organisation recognises Somaliland’s independence officially.

Somaliland gained its independence from the British Empire on June 26, 1960. Somalia gained its independence from Italy on July 1, 1960. Somaliland voluntarily united with the Somalis who were occupied by the Italians in 1988 and 1991. In almost a million people were killed in the Somaliland massacre. British Somaliland has established an independent government, it has created a passport for sea and land forces, there are free and fair elections, it closed the border in 1960 to the African colonialists, Somaliland is a peaceful country, all it needs is international recognition to support its 1960.

The host you are absolutely correct it's correct that Ethiopia make herself a landlocked country back in 1991 when the leader at the time basically gave up the port of a s s e b t o Eritrea when Eritrea separated for her motherland Ethiopia back then you're right

Guest is disingenuous!. No Somalian official has visited Somaliland since 1984! They can't. Have no jurisdiction. Somaliland is like Taiwan is to China. Separate and historically independent. You can't claim a stake in a place you don't own. Somaliland has full rights to pursue international ties. The hypocrisy of the US is unhealthy. They engage Taiwan and even hold joint naval exercises to irk China but isolates Somaliland to please Mogadishu.
