We certainly don't want to end up breeding super-viral infections.

A drug like this may be prohibitively expensive, though. Looking at antivirals currently on the market, like valganciclovir, it's usually in the upper price tiers of insurance formularies, if it's in there at all. The same is true for HIV antivirals. Plus, doctors are very strict about giving out prescriptions for these drugs, saving them only for the very sick and vulnerable population. This is interesting science, but I don't think it would be something available to the general population.

"One of the reasons the common cold is so difficult to attack is that it's so profitable to the pharmaceutical industry"
@richardbidinger25776 жыл бұрын
No, not really. There are something like 3000 different viruses that can give you a cold. Just like in the video, targeting one group won't get them all. A medicine that might work on a few hundred, may not have any affect at all on the rest. Common colds generally don't kill people, its not immediately necessary that we find a cure, so research tends to run a little slower there. Finding a cure or panacea for the common cold would actually be a bit more lucrative that the fairly cheap over the counter treatments they currently sell. You might spend twenty or so dollars on something to make the symptoms less terrible for the one or two weeks you have the cold, but you could expect to pay two to three times that on medicine that will get rid of it in a couple days. They get you either way.
@judewakefield72136 жыл бұрын

@@judewakefield7213 but not nearly as profitable as getting the same person to spend money on your symptom suppressors multiple times per year.
@judewakefield72136 жыл бұрын
Kevin Sheppard Think about it: you could put half your competition out of business, sell the cure at jacked up prices greater than the 30 bucks a year you get from the average consumer (an 1800 dollar cure would outpace even a prolific spender for 20 years) Plus receiving the money upfront would increase investor capital in the long run. It’s the difference between having 1800 now or a bond that pays 180 for ten years (at which point you may be out of business or bought out) It’s not a conspiracy, it’s just not terribly viable to spend much on research (because research is a gamble). But actively suppressing a cure? That’s just silly.

Yeah but what will this do to our immune system long-term? Will we become more and more sensitive and have to rely more on medicine to live? I'd like to see some research done on the long-term effects of human health by eliminating common colds, flu and other various viruses
@Silent330916 жыл бұрын
We won't be "more sensitive" but it's very obvious the human race will be more and more reliant on medicine in the future, and the reason for that is instead of letting sick people die we treat them and keep them alive, thus preventing natural selection from doing it's job like it did in the past. and that is a good thing we'll rely on modern medicine to rid us from diseases instead of mountains of human corpses, and hey if modern medicine does fail we still have natural selection to fall back onto.
@sacr36 жыл бұрын
@@Silent33091 If humans are more reliant on medicine, then that would imply that their bodies are less able to rid themselves of disease. Which would make sense, it seems were already seeing some of this, hypersensitivity to bacteria because of the extreme lengths people go through to clean their bodies. So I would assume by eliminating our bodies need to attack most viruses and bacteria due to vaccines and pills you can pop, if ever knew day a virus adapts to bypass out manufactured immunity i would assume it would be very deadly due to our weakened immunity towards most viruses. Could be wrong though, maybe our immune system is strong and fights hard but you'll be forced through all the stages of being ill because you had no immunity. Which means sniffles, fever, sore throat, etc So it could be good, could be meh, im not sure. As for natural selection, were better than it. Eventually yes, we will find ways to fix disease, disabilities, etc through genome editing making everyone have a fully capable and functioning healthy body. No more letting natural selection kill, we will be able to give these people a full life. Humans are much more logical and kind than our ecosystem.... well to ourselves lol, somewhat, in some places...
@judewakefield72136 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but I mostly see in your statement a series of metaphors to explain the immune system then using those same metaphors to predict the immune system's behavior. I'm afraid it's far more complicated than "our immune system will weaken if there's no cold" It's that sort of misunderstanding that leads people to assume "natural immunity" is superior to vaccination. This isn't meant as an attack.
@sacr36 жыл бұрын
@@judewakefield7213 Well it seems to be the case, for example ancient tribes that are untouched by us are apparently more sensitive to the bacteria and viruses we carry since they didnt evolve immunities for what our immune system typically deals with every day. Vaccines today are great because most give us a sample of the virus but weakened, so our body can "attack it" and our memory B cells can remember. So of were hit by that virus one day down the road our body will react quick Basically a handbook to teach our immune system. But if we make it so our immune system doesnt have to bother with most viruses at all? That would be concerning, possibly. That's what I would like to know from a scientist, or a professional. Their opinion on long term effects of making our bodies immune not through improving the immune system but by inserting proteins thatll disable the virus before it has a chance to do anything.

Could it possibly harm us to eliminate the common cold though? Is it not the case that our immune system needs to be exposed to pathogens in order to properly develop? I think such research could be massively useful in fighting viruses in general so I support it. But I don’t know about applying it to the common cold?
