Hi Rob and Chris , regarding the RR fuel problem ,I had exactly the same problem with a RR TD6 3.0ltr BMW engine . On the rear of the high pressure pump is a fuel shut off solenoid this controls the high pressure fuel to the injectors , when this fails you get the symptons that you are experiencing. After i renewed the one on my RR ir started first time . I am a 69 year old retired mechanic that still likes to keep my hand in , health permitting . Good luck lads .

Rob you need to check the code setting criteria for the fuel related error codes. My guess would be the ecu preventing the injectors firing and cutting fuel delivery. Congrats on the 250k subscribers well done 👍

Fully agree with this comment. Just because nothing at injectors doesn’t mean pump isn’t working. It appears to be returning to tank due to what ever is causing issue. Check that fuel pressure sensor

No expert, but I watch a lot of KZbin car electrical diagnostic videos. Mostly American and one Dutch. These guys know what they are about and in this situation they would do exactly what toolmanchris suggests. Once they find out the code setting criteria they persue the root cause of the problem. Mind you they seem to have very good access to manufacturers wiring diagrams etc. Anyway good luck.

Don't think you've tried this but given the age and mileage of car, does look like the crank sensor. They often don't throw a code, just the ECU doesn't think the engine is turning so doesn't pump fuel (and/or fire on a petrol vehicle). The rpm measurement you are getting could be coming from the crankshaft measurement. Usually a very cheap part and I'd definitely now do that first on any vehicle that doesn't run and doesn't really throw a code saying why. Hope this helps and see you've now reached the 250k!!! Cheers.

The fuel injectiors on these 'lion' V6 diesels are piezo type injectors which use high voltage (120 v) to vibrate a crystal rather than solenoid type injectors which use a ground switched 12 v supply. They make up to 10 small injections per injection cycle. I'm, therefore, not sure if you noid light will work with them. (I may be wrong!) In order for the injectors to start injecting you need a fuel rail pressure of over 150 barg (2175 psi) so if you are getting 7000 psi on cranking the fuel injectors should start injecting. The fuel injection system is based on the Bosch system with both a pressure (DRV) and volume control device. The pressure control valve is built into the fuel pump itself and the pressure is controlled via PWM signal from the ECM. When the DRV solenoid is de-energized, an internal spring holds a valve closed. At fuel pressure of 100 bar (1450 psi) or higher, the force of the spring is overcome, opening the valve and allowing fuel pressure to decay into the fuel return pipe. When the pressure in the fuel rail decays to approximately 100 bar (1450 psi) or less, the spring force overcomes the fuel pressure and closes the valve. When the ECM energises the solenoid, the valve is closed allowing the fuel pressure to build. The pressure can go upto around 1600 bar. I guess the next test for you is to check the duty cycle of the DRV to see how it matches the requested duty cycle and how the duty cycle of the VCV matches the duty cycle you saw on your Autel. It's a bit difficult without a scope though. If the pressure is building to the point at which the injectors open and is then dropping then it could just be the pump that is toast and not providing enough volume but it's strange it is giving you the pressure. Other issues may be the injector drivers within the ECM are failing or the voltage to the ECM dropping below 9v when cranking which restricts the operation of the fuel injectors.

Rob my d3 tdv6 had a can bus problem that stopped the car starting, after loads of analysis with my oscilloscope on the medium and high speed bus I tracked it down to the gateway device in the instrument cluster. They have solder joint problems. What gave it away was the LCD information display not showing outside temperature. It actually makes the car think it has crashed so shuts down the fuel system and give loads of communication indications etc for the other ecus. The cluster repair was £150 on a two day turn around.

Faults seem to suggest that even though it's commanding fuel to the rail, there's no pressure there, so it's assuming there is an issue with the fuel rail pressure sensor. My experience is that the pumps break up internally, generally as a result of petrol being run through them. Chances are, fuel is being directly returned to the filter head due to brass contamination in the pump.

Rob, LP from the tank pump is 0.3-0.5 bar. During starting you need 150bar 2205psi. Average pressure when running is 1600bar 23520psi at the rails. It can peak at 1650bar. Check inlet pressure at the schrader valve above the HPP. Low pressure faults cause high pressure faults. If ok, check HPP belt. Pressure control valve is open with no ignition feed, so ign off equals zero pressure. If 2205psi is not achieved, injectors will not be pulsed. The 1700psi you are seeing us a default substitute implausible value, applied by the ecu. If pressure does not rise during cranking and fuel rail pressure switch has its connections and LP is 0.5bar, then the HPP is done. Hope this helps. Ps injectors ate piezo and fire at 120v, best you dont put your nose lights in them!

Grest series guys, one of your best. I just found your channel in Aug 2024 so I'm binge viewing. Excellent content & genuine guys. I don't see a playlist for this cheapest range rover sport video series, so I've watched some of them accidentally out of sequence. I had problems with other series also, having to play the introduction to figure out if it was the first part or a follow-up part. I wonder if it would help other viewers if there was pt1 pt2 pt3, etc. Im no youtube expert, but I'd imagine it would help youtubes suggestion algorithm if the title of each video in a series didn't change except for the part number (pt1 pt2...) component. Just constructive points, not trying to be on ur back. Love the channel. Might help others and increase viewer numbers who may not want to search as hard as I did for follow-up as even the ones with playlists are not in sequence as the title changes so much each time I reckon.

When you're testing with the multimeter you had it set on the lowest resistance, only 200 ohms - it will show as open circuit if the resistance is above that, set it to the highest setting and come down to find the value... Part might be OC anyway, but if its a valve/solenoid or something the value could be much higher than 200ohms...

Hi Rob , i had the same problem with a ford focus diesel , the exact as you are having . I too changed the intank fuel pump but after a long time trying to find the problem i fixed it !!! it was the fuel pump , the new one was not pumping the fuel to the injectors . i replaced the fuel pump again for a better one and it worked . I hope its as simple as that for you . Good luck .

The fact that the injectors aren’t being fired makes me think it is an electrical fault. Could the faults on the parking brake and transmission modules be stopping the ECU firing the injectors? I assume it needs to see the transmission is in park and the handbrake on before it will allow the engine to fire. Is there good fuel flow from the in tank low pressure pump to the high pressure pump?

I would definitely be considering transmission faults. Could be a sensor that's making it think it's not in park. Don't know if they've carried out continuity tests on the injector wiring or even checked the fuses. Could be a 70 amp fuse blown. . Who knows.

Kevin……you might be right when you say the fault could lie with the parking brake sensor. I’m sure I’ve seen a similar problem on a car & it was traced back to the sensor that was underneath the centre console panel that houses the parking brake switch/gear stick etc……

Hi from Durham guys 👋👍 I hope you guys get it nailed and I know its a long shot but try the fuel rail pressure sensors if there's 2 cos sometimes if they get interrupted signals won't allow to release pressure as all sensors work in connection with each other and if one not sending signal will immobilise the entirety of injector run lol hope to see it done and hope it's not pump but you guys can handle it total confidence in your diagnosis and work 👌 thanks for your time be safe and see you soon 👍 👋

Hi guys, congratulations for the great effort, retired mechanic looking in from Australia, had a similar problem of wind no start with our neighbours one month old toyota corolla, took over my trust can of Export degreaser gave it a short spray in the aircleaner induction housing and away it went , the owners had the car for two years and never missed a beat. When i worked in the mining industry we had a large Atlas Copco compresser with a v671 diesel that didn't have a primer pump for the fuel system so we used a rag soaked in petrol and stuffed in the aircleaned to get it going, i would try one of these to atleast get a run out of the engine to hear what it sounds like. You need over 5000psi of fuel pressure for it to start. As you're struggling to get 1000psi I'd definitely say pump or lift pump. Check for swarf in the tank in a clean container and magnet. Replacing the pump will require all fuel lines cleaning then there's no guarantee swarf hasn't found their way to the injectors. Good luck it's been a good project to watch so far!

18:30, 3 of the 4 faults were fuel rail pressure sensor related, suggests a problem with the sensor or wiring to it, worth doing a resistance check of the sensor once disconnected to see if it is open circuit or shorting out.

I called the hp pump in the 1st video and i stand by that comment now, to add tho the ecu wont fire the injectors if it doesn't see the desired fuel pressure in the rail and it could be ignoring the data from the rail pressure sensor due to the fault code and showing you false readings for it in the scan tool, at the back of the engine bay that wiring trunking comes out the way giving better access to remove the pump get it out and take the 3 little heads off of it you will see the problem i'm sure of it
@simonjones7785
@simonjones7785 Жыл бұрын
an osiliscope would be handy at this time to see if the injectors are under ECU control you need to check the output side of the high pressure pump to make sure the one way valves in the hp pump are holding pressure

Congrats on the 250k! Remember early on you said "we're car guys who do youtube, not youtubers who do cars" and that has held true and why the channel is so great, like a fly on the wall of your business - fascinating and great to see the channel do well, on the range rover I'm also leaning towards fuel pump volume being the problem (pressure o.k. but lack of volume) - no doubt you'll crack it 💪

My friend had a disco 4, 2015. it had an electronic boost problem in the turbo and wouldn't even turn over. He had to get it delivered to a LR/JGR garage where they literally took the body off the chassis to replace one single plug. The guys at the dealership even told him to get rid of it. It cost him £4400 just for one single plug that cost £7!

If your getting fuel pressure 250bar that should be enough to start, BUT, if the rail pressure sensor is reading wrong you'll get and open regulator valve in the pump, you have codes for the rail sensor, 3 wire sensor, ground, 5 volt, signal wire, go for the centre wire on crank you should see over 1 volt,

Rob is the sport in crash mode there is 3 modes crash. factory and transport .if its in crash it won't start you can ask your friend the land rover technician. Crash mode is the same as a fuel cut off switch like in ford's but in the range rover its built in to the module .

Hi Rob At the firewall behind were you replaced that part the fuel line has a valve. Same as a car tyre valve with a cap on it. It's a bleed nipple just poke a small pointy screwdriver into it and make sure the air is out. Fuel should be pumping from it.

Hi guy's, fantastic news about reaching 250k subscribers 👍🏻 just a thought but have you or have you considered taking the fuel rail and feed hose off and checking for swarf/debris? Just being common rail, if anything has got into the feed line or the end of the rail then you won't get a drop from any one of the injector's

I just fixed mine but I have the 5.0 V8. It turns out to be the high pressure fuel rail sensor. Have the same problem as you. Apparently the fuel pressure sensor signal is used to control the fuel pressure valve at the high pressure fuel pump. At engine start on a good working sensor it will allow the fuel pressure to go up max pressure to help start the engine. If the sensor is bad it will not allow the pressure to build. Which will not allow to start. Change the sensor and you should be good.

Well deserved 250k subs because this is the best and most honest auto channel on KZbin. My favourite car the Land rover I was hoping that the replacement part would start the engine so I could see Rob dancing around with a great big dazzling grin on his face. I agree with others that the fault is the ECU for fuel distribution to the injectors. I know you both will crack the problem and have the disco running soon. Thank you Rob & Chris for another entertaining video. Tom & Hilda

The high pressure injectors on a LR will shut down the moment you crack them off. It is a safety feature due to the high pressure. You need 25K psi fuel pressure I don't think 7k is enough.

Fuel rail sensor is just a sensor. There will be a pressure control valve built into the pump, often replaceable. This is what dumps the pressure back to the tank...worth a check!

@@sruk Sorry guys, I thought you'd done the common rail pressure sensor! It might be that an injector fault is causing the ECU to dump the pressure, but unlikely they are all dead...or there's a pump fault and so the ECU isn't firing the injectors. Or it's the ECU. It might be worth getting it tested or try a donor unit.

my moneys on the immobilizer ,or possible fine gauze cone filter on pump inlet blocked. usually you cannot bypass it by just putting power on the solenoid. for it to pump nothing would have to be some major failure on the pump like a sheared main shaft.

I doubt if a LR trained technician would fare any better than you troubleshooting this bag of bones! The only difference is that they can swap out parts infinitely and charge accordingly. The new scanning computer is a real help, delving deep into the myriad of electronics contained in these vehicles. Not for the faint hearted, but for those well wedged! Great content, can’t wait for next episode guys 👍😎

Just a point, when you were doing the initial checks with the test meter you were only using the 20 ohm range. That means anything over that will show open circuit. If you don't get any continuity, try switching to a higher range. The resistance of a solenoid coil is likely to be a lot higher than 20 ohm.

I've got an older (petrol) car that I don't use very often. I think that sometimes the injectors get a bit 'sticky' due to lack of use. Someone showed me that giving the injectors a gentle tap with the plastic handle of a screwdriver can free up any that are stuck. Doing this has appeared to help with getting the car started a few times. So far I've not broken any of the injectors (I know, famous last words). 250K subscribers now. Congratulations.
