Bentley, you are correct about this being a John Deere. In fact this machine was designed for high speed assembly which lowered the cost. The bosses at Deere were afraid we would damage the Deere name and wouldn't let us brand it Deere. But this only lasted a year or two and the quality of the design let us brand the unit Deere and it became the 100 Series. I was the engineering manager in charge of designing this machine. Being the engineering manager let me collect some advertising material which I would give you if you would like. Let me know and I'll send it to you. Just FYI, these were built (and still are) in Greenville Tennessee.

Looks like Derek needs to learn on ya a bit there young buck. So the pedal would be your brakes. The P orange lock and unlock is your parking brakes. Some tractors require it to be set to start. That button on the dash is if you have the blades on and want to reverse with them running you have to press that button. It's a safety measure for people who don't know and should really not have a rider to begin with. Lastly that big aluminum cover on the front of the engine is OHV or over head valves. Just makes it easier to work on them and keeps them oiled properly. Lastly the thing on the rear is because you have a hydrostatic driven transmission no gears just forward and backwards. Usually not a good option for a racing mower. Running the transmission at a much faster rate can create to much pressure and you will usually burn out the fluid pump. You really need something with actual gears. Lastly most tractors if your missing a key a strait screwdriver Usually works. And lastly. Kohler engines were all John deer used for years they are superior to Briggs and even kawasaki or even Honda if you ask me. They just sound way better and have more torque. Wrench away my dude you will eventually learn. Hopefully you don't lose a limb or something like that. I have more scars than I care to mention from my early days of riding mowers and then quads and go carts wr built. You just gotta do it. Lastly faster doesn't always mean better. I always preferred the normal speed of tractors and mowing large lawns. I mowed 3 acres with a tractors with a deck the same size as this. It would take 3 hours. I'd put on my Walkman headphones. Jam out and just get lost mowing. Made good money and it will help you relax to.

Your PTO belt is broken or jumped. That mechanical PTO design is much easier on belts than the electric clutch design, so longer belt life. Cheap to fix. This mower was probably built in the premium JD facility in Horicon, Wisconsin. If the serial number starts with "MX", then that's the case. If it starts with "GX", then it was built in Greeneville, Tennessee. The Sabre was originally intended to be sold only through non-JD dealers like Sears and Home Depot and was targeted at the "mid-price market". It was based on the model STX mower, with specific design changes to reduce cost, while maintaining reliability and durability. That Kohler engine is a good one. Maintain it, and it will last a lifetime, if it's not already ruined. About the smoking, when you push the throttle full forward, it engages the choke, which will flood the engine quickly, so only use when cold., never when running. The hydrostatic transmission is sealed, so no oil change is recommended. Have fun bringing it back to life! Also, you missed a decimal point on the hour meter...100+ hours is more like it, not 1000+!

The pull lever disengages the transmission so it free wheels making it easier to push. Also, pushing the mower with the drive engaged a can damage the transmission

The orange slider on left side of dash is parking brake so you don't have to push left side pedal to start. To enable, push pedal all the way forward, slide button up and let go of pedal. To disengage, push pedal down, and slide button down. Yellow button is to be able to back up with blades running. Slider on right side of dash is "cruise control".

Good job LG! Someone already told you about the button for reversing, but the choke mode is throttle lever all the way forward. That's why is was running "weird" when you pushed it all the way up. You should feel an indent, like a bump in the lever when it's full throttle. Past that is choke. The orange, up/down thingy on the left is a parking brake. Push that pedal all the way in and lift on the orange thingy, release the pedal and it should stay pushed down. You can start it without having to be on it. That "1800s push mower" (LOL) is more likely late 1960s to mid 1970s. The deck looked like it was cast aluminum. FIND!! Looked to be in great shape, not rusty (corroded) or broken. See if you can find some old metal wheels (like on the back) for it. Not the new plastic ones. Might even find some around the old barn. You could polish the aluminum deck and make it shine! Remove the blade and replace it with a pulley and install a car alternator to run from the bottom of the motor with a belt and make a generator...of sorts 12v, charge batteries... Hook up a power inverter and use it for 110v power tools, lights, etc. (Dad-help seriously encouraged here) Some mowers of that period actually had magnesium decks! I have an old LawnBoy mower with one. Love watching your shows and thanks to Bradley for manning the camera. Good job Brad!

The little yellow button on the left is the backup button. Some mowers you have to push and hold but it's so you can backup without turning off the blades

On the John Deere on the right side you have the brake pedal and the height adjustment for cutting grass. The orange (P) is your parking brake. The yellow button you push in when you want to go in reverse. If you don't push it in, it will stall out. The yellow handle on the right is for engaging the blades. Hope this helps you out.

You go young man! -- Problem solving skills you are developing will last you a lifetime ! Perhaps check the cable on your blade engagement - likely broken, rusted or otherwise impinged so that it doesn't operate the idler and engage the belt / blades.

The Sabre being a hydrostatic transmission is going to be limited to making it go fast. It can be done, but it's not likely to do what it should for very long. A gear drive transmission is what you need. You mentioned using the Cub tires on the Sabre, the wheels wont work most likely. Usually the Husqvarna and Deere riders will use a key way on the rear axle and the MTD/Cub riders will use a shaped axle. The tension idler arm on the mower deck is probably stuck, it's pretty common after that sit for a while. It's just a manual pivot situation. The Kohler engine is a peach though. Those are hard to come by anymore (the command). Fun watching you learn.

hey there little grip, im sure someone else has told you, but in case they havent, that lever on the back of these mowers is the engagement for the hydrostatic transmission. if you pull that lever out it disengages the transmission (puts the mower in neutral) and you can push the mower without damaging the transmission. if you push the lever in it engages the transmission and pushing the mower with the transmission engaged can damage it.

But a general rule on valves (Gas, Air...ect) is if the valve knob/handle is in line with the hose/pipe direction,that is on, and of course if it crosses the direction of the lines that is off, great deduction by you.😉 Running richer than Mr. Beast....you crack me up!! Hey Bentley a good tip on fuel valves is turned in line it will run fine, to the side it won’t run or will die. I worked on one of these that was stored for years in a garage and used to cut the lawn 3 times before it was put away with no fuel in it. Definitely sounds like it wants a valve adjustment

In the late 1990s John Deere decided to start selling there mowers through big box stores. To get around the contracts they had with there dealers they “rebranded “ the low end mowers with the Sabre name. They were virtually the same as the STX series John Deere mowers. They forced the dealerships to sign new contracts that allowed them to sell JD branded equipment to the big box stores.
