Not that I am an expert by any means, but it is my understanding that struggling and kicking their way out of the egg is what builds up the leg muscles in order for them to be able to walk and move around well. If they get helped out, the balance/leg issue sometimes happens as the leg muscles haven't had that boost to get started. The sock, I would guess, provides just enough pressure for them to push around with their legs overnight and build up those muscles. Your videos are great!

+Erik Gulsvig - thanks, Erik! And this duckling was egg #3 that hatched entirely on its own, no assistance from us. But it took 2 days longer to hatch, so it must’ve been pretty weak from taking so long.
@TheJynx202040405 жыл бұрын
We were given a 1 day old duckling with the same issue. He is now over a year old but still cannot keep balance and will fall over when standing without assistance. Do you think this "sock method" would work with an adult duck? We were told he has a neurological condition, BUT he has made some improvements with all the things I've built him that assist him with standing up.

Animals are quite amazing.....my Muscovy duck had a nest on the roof of the coop! She hatched out a single duckling. When my husband went up there to check it out the duckling ran right off the roof and landed on its back. Mom was down with me getting food.....I was sure the duckling would be a goner but nope it turned over and ran right to the mom! I’ve got them in a pen now and doing fine. Amazing how resilient they are!

In case you're interested in the science behind it: most animals have "righting reactions" that help them to keep their head in midline. It works using your vestibular system (which is comprised of the fluid filled semicircular canals in your middle ear that sense when your head is tilted) and these vestibules send signals to your central nervous system, and your cns in turn signals specific muscles to contract to bring your head back into midline. The duckling clearly hadn't integrated this vestibular system in the egg - he can't tell which point is the midline so he keeps falling over. His body basically didn't know what midline felt like, so putting him in the sock held him upright with his head in midline and allowed his vestibular system to 'calibrate' of you like so that this system got itself working properly. Fun side fact: when you spin, the fluid in your ears semi circular canals sloshes around, which send signals to your brain to tell you you're spinning. When you stop spinning, the fluid in your ears keeps sloshing around because of inertia. The vestibular system is telling your brain that you're spinning, while your eyes tell your brain that you're still. This causes a confusion between your senses that you interpret as dizziness. Typically, it will also make you feel nauseated because the only way your brain can reconcile the different signals is because of a toxin that you've consumed, so it attempts to make you throw up the 'poison'. That's also why people get car sick. Their vestibular system is telling them that they have forward acceleration, but their eyes are seeing the inside of a completely still car. That's why looking out the window helps.

Green tomatoes can be made into a relish or fried. Depending on the size, hanging the plants upside down will help in the ripening.
@missingallmymarbles76706 жыл бұрын
The best way to salvage/ripen tomatoes at the end of the season according to the master gardening course was to tear the entire plant up and either hang it upside down or spread it out on newspapers in a garage or basement or any other similarly sheltered but not necessarily heated space. Grow lights or windows are necessary to have any hope of them changing color but don’t count on much. Leaving the fruit on their vines allows the underripe tomatoes to ripen and store better with less spoilage.

My Dad used to take the late green regular size tomatoes & wrap each one in a piece of newspaper, place them in a single layer in a cardboard box, then put the box in a dark area. They would ripen slowly. He would check them periodicly to make sure they were keeping well. Some people make Green Tomato Relish. I slice extra tomatoes, tomatilloes, cucumbers, etc., into thin slices & dehydrate them till crisp. You can lightly sprinkle them with sea salt or not. Then I vacuum seal them in Mason Jars to eat thru the winter like chips or on a toss salad, or in veggie, etc. for extra nutrients , fillers etc.

There are several uses for green tomatoes. #1. Fried green tomatoes. Dip sliced green tomatoes in egg wash then in seasoned flour and fry till tender. #2. Salsa Verde. Substitute green tomatoes for tomatillos in any Salsa Verde recipe. They are extremely similar. #3. Add diced or sliced green tomatoes to soups stews and roasts, once cooked they taste similar to cooked zucchini.

@White House on the Hill Many comments about the garden veggies. I wanted to help you out on the chick legs. IAt one time I had a hatchery and we always had a few chicks / ducklings that had this problem. It is mostly due to that egg not being turned properly. We used 2 twist ties together and wrapped the legs in the proper position. The splayed legs will recover in a few days just remember to keep the legs in the same position as the other chicks. Good luck on the next hatch....

Green tomatoes can be pickled and will taste really good with food. Just blanch them 1 minute then drain water , place it in a jar , add peeled garlic with cilantro in food processor, roughly chop them with little vinegar and salt,then mix them with tomatoes and add vinegar till they are submerged. Leave it in dark cool place for a week and your pickle is ready. Place it in fridge and eat a little with your meals 😊
@gregoryhalye89075 жыл бұрын
peanut butter is extremely easy .... one of the best ways is to dry roast them (in the shell) and then shell them, removing the inner skins as well ... And then you put them through a food processor, blending them up really good if you can, after which you can use a mortar and pestle to really mash it all up into a much finer paste, or leave it with the crunchy bits. You don't really need to add anything else to it, though you MAY want to let it sit in a jar for a few days and then skim the peanut oils off the top, but many people find that it is better and richer tasting (and creamier) to mix the oil back in before using it.

Put your green tomatoes in a box with a top, a paper sack will work too. Every two or three days check for ripe tomatoes. Where I live tomatoes never ripen on the vine. Just to short of a season. So I pick all my tomatoes green and put them in boxes or paper sacks. If you use paper sacks fold over the top. The idea is to keep them in the dark. I have heard to that you can wrap them in newspaper and put them in a container and check every few days. I found that to be more work though! Blessings!

They had these huge fans in them for air circulation cuz I The summer it got really hot but in the winter it was cozy. My baby girl was 2 at that time use to come out with us while we did our chores and it was comfortable. Do you k ow what kind of structures I’m talking about? I hope I’m using the right name. I’ll look it up. But I think that even just having one for your garden and one for your animals to start off with would be great for you! You could garden all year like here in Hawaii!
