Time is running out for video-sharing app TikTok - or at least for the more than 100 million users in the US. The app is owned by a Chinese company, and law enforcement experts say the app not only could, but is likely to be used by Beijing to spy on US citizens - and worse, on government officials. That is why earlier this week, the US had already banned the use of TikTok on government mobile phones. Canada, the European Parliament and the EU Commission announced similar bans on their employees.

As far as I know they refused to comply with the Chinese law. Placing their servers in China. BTW Alphabet inc is active in China (android). The thing is TikTok complies with the local regulations, but is banned based on that the mother company is Chinese. But the reality is that the algorithm of TikTok is too advanced and blowing the competition out of the water. Under the Trump admin Bytedance was willing to sell TikTok but without their algorithm. Deal got shot off without it.

Mixing general data collection by foreign states with operational failures in a war when soldiers are allowed to use otherwise perfectly fine tracking apps which reveal their position. Using mobile phones alone is a problem in latter situation like the Russians found out last year when a training facility was found in the same way. And did she read "AI" too often in the last few months? Tiktok is not so popular because it uses some better AI.

Government devices should not contain or be other non-allied government companies' apps/devices. Company phones should not contain social apps or rival company apps. The exception is for those who work with those apps/devices specifically. Personal phones can install whatever they want, but apps and devices must clearly state what information they take and when they take it. If a phone has both personal and work account, then it should be considered as work phone. This is my personal opinion.

Once your data is collected it really too late. It's bought and sold quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes an entire system crash and start over again. I'm just thinking of how this can be used as an international threat. If you enemy wanted to set up a crisis and disable/mess up your mode of communications then I can see why it would be necessary to redo our systems.
