GQ Sports My First Million - Tua Tagovailoa: • How Tua Tagovailoa Spe...
Tua Tagovailoa was the most recent guest on GQ Sports' series titled My First Million detailing how professional athletes spent their first million dollars.
The big takeaway from this episode is that Tua Tagovailoa only spends the money he earns from his endorsements, not his contract money. He signed a 4 year, $30 million contract with a $20 million signing bonus so he will be receiving nearly $21 million this year to play football, not counting his endorsement money which is undisclosed.
Living off of his endorsement money only is similar to Rob Gronkowski and is becoming more common among professional athletes. This is the way to go for all young athletes.
Tua was the starting quarterback for the University of Alabama the past two seasons and was the savior the season before that in the National Championship game against Georgia. His career really began in the second half of the 2018 National Championship game.
Following his career at Alabama, he was selected in the first round by the Miami Dolphins to be their new franchise quarterback.
His spending was pretty conservative as his main purchase was a house that he purchased in cash for $1.65 million in Davie, Florida right down the street from the Miami Dolphins training facility.

That's my only criticism of athletics they seem to always be momma's boy. The role of a parent is to set an example and give you the wings to fly away. The best gift of appreciation you can give your parents is to never need them.

Technically yeah, but it should be difficult to go broke as an athlete period. They just fall into simple traps that get exacerbated by the fact that they're sudden millionaires, which inflate expectations. It's lifestyle inflation taken to its logical extreme. If they saved that money to begin with, they'd be set for life, but of course life is never that simple. Family ask for ridiculous favors and guilt you into making bad financial decisions that you'll be locked into for life, etc.

@@WMDistraction Most nfl players will make their real money if they make it to their second contract(in 3 or 4 yrs). That's only if they're good enough to get it offered. The average career span of an nfl player is 3yrs. No guaranteed contracts in the nfl either.

It depends. If you're a good QB you should be fine because that can be a 10-15+ year long career. But if you are bad you can wash out in under 5 years. Then you either are good enough to be a backup which is good money, or you are out of the league entirely.

He’s just going to have to realize that he cannot spoil his big family. Spoiling and taking care of can be two different things. Plus you get certain things out the way so you don't have to worry about it later. He doesn't have to hoard every single penny. Athletes typically don't come from a long line of money. Nothing wrong with helping and upgrading certain family members.

1 Get a Financial Advisor and Business Manager. 2 Set up your own corporation e.g Tua Tagovalioa Limited. Have your money be paid into this corporation. This allows for you to avail of business tax breaks and allows for you to offset some of your taxes as business expenses. 3. Have your agent and or business manager approach numerous different sponsorship opportunities. For example, have the approach a local car dealership that will allow you to get a car for free and trade it in for another free car whenever you want. Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr has a deal like this in place. Get a Nike, Addidas, New Balance, Puma deal. That's clothes and cars covered. 4. Live off your endorsements and never touch your actual contract money. 5. Do not purchase a house until your second (much larger contract), Players can be traded at the drop of a hat, and having to try and sell your house is not ideal during the middle of a season. I would not recommend renting usually but in this situation, rent something nice that isn't too costly or even try and have your team pay for accommodation as part of your contract negotiations. 6. Wait until your second contract to buy mom and dad a house or if your sponsorship deals are lucrative enough, buy the house using the sponsorship money. While it is fantastic to look after the family, don't go to extravagant. A house around the $500K mark depending on what area of the country you live in is more than enough for your family to be comfortable. 7. Upskill during your Career. Do not rest on simply just being a professional athlete. Strike while the iron is hot. Prepare for life after your sports career. Go back to school and finish your degree. Reach out to numerous different organizations and build and develop relationships in what you wish to do after football. If you want to be a businessman/woman, reach out to people at the top of their field for advice and build relationships. Have your future career set up before your current career is close to finishing. 8. Diversify. If you are capable of living within your means, invest a percentage of your income ( This can still be your sponsorship money) into different opportunities. Vet these opportunities before investing. Have your financial advisor, business manager, and trusted relationships within the industry vet these opportunities before investing. 9. A prenup is key. A significant number of athletes are taken to the cleaners after their career ends and the cheques stop coming in. Prepare for the day that you hope never comes. 10. Unless you are mega-wealthy, do not buy more than one house. Yes, it is fine to have a holiday home if you plan to vacation in the same place every year but do not purchase numerous multi-million dollar properties unless you plan to rent them out while you aren't living there. Investing in property is smart business but buy an apartment building rather than a multi-million dollar home. Consistent rent from tenants and the potential to sell on for a large profit in the future is smart. 11. If possible, after your career has finished, move to a state that has 0 state income tax with Texas and Florida being the preferred destinations for most.

Even if he bought expensive cars, he did save 50% of his post-tax signing bonus. That is roughly half of $7-$8 million ($3-$4 million). That is good enough to live off the rest of someone's life if he invests in dividend ETFs like SPHD. $3 million invested in SPHD pays $100k per year in dividends pre-tax.

Instead of buying one really expensive home I would buy a nice one for myself in a good area and then a bunch of other places to rent out and get that money working for me. But I guess that’s obvious to a lot of people.

All those SUVs are significantly smaller. The Tesla Model Y can get real closer to 80, 3rd row seating isn't even available yet and that's another 3k. Full sized SUVs are not cheap and he didn't even come close to the higher end. 80k for an Escalade is not even top of the line for the Escalade. The Sport Platinum trim level starts at 107k before extra options.

I don’t believe in buying yourself or other people luxury items and liability when you get that first paycheck. Invest as much as you can in the beginning and pay for it with the cash flow from your investments. This way you’ll have money coming in no matter if you get a second contract. Also, those liabilities are still there after your playing days so let the cash flow from real estate or dividend stocks pay for those expenses. 🤷🏾‍♂️🧐
