Let Mitch decide what he wants. He has the no trade clause. He if wants to walk when he becomes a UFA, it sucks for the team. But thats a part of the business side. Sundin did something similar. I was mad at him back then, but he had every right to play out his contract and sign with Vancouver half way through the season.

You can exceed the cap in the summer. Hypothetically they can sign who they want before and on july 1 and trade Marner on July 1/2 after paying the bonus. But I don’t pretend to believe we’re actually going to be able to trade Marner, feels more and more like wishful thinking

I've already resigned myself to at least 1 more year of this roster with Marner and J.T on it. After that and the leafs inevitably lose in the first round again they will remove Shannahan and Berube and Tree can finally put their fingerprints on this team and see if we can make ourselves a cup contender.

Bertuzzi is going to take the best contract, period. He may like it in Toronto, but that will mean absolutely nothing. This is his contract, the one where he makes the money that will sustain him and his family forever, and if you think he is going to take less to go anywhere you're crazy, or he is.

He's already sustained himself and his family forever if they have even the slightest understanding of investment. But, in the quest for money there is no end point. I don't pretend to judge him because 99.9% of players take the biggest contract and it's extremely rare for a player to take a massive hit to stay with their team. Sure, they sometimes take a hit, but rarely do they take a terrible deal just for the team. I'm sure if any of us were pros we'd take the money too. Just wish it wasn't that way.

You are hugely miss remembering the series if you think Bert neutralized anything Brad wanted to do. Bert and Domi both tried to go after Brad and Brad suckered both of them into several penalties early in the series. When they got more disciplined as the series went on that stopped but no one was in Brad's face making him stop. You are just flat out wrong.

@@thepinkplushie He didn't look like the same player he's been in the past because he isn't. He's not that 100 point guy anymore. He's like a 60 point guy now. His hips are toast he isn't the water bug he once was that could dance coverages and could make guys miss checks. But he was still super productive in that series. He's still got a really deceptive shot and he's still very responsible defensively and he did take over some periods of that series. He just isn't capable of taking over entire games anymore. That's what age and injury does to a guy.

That’s crazy to me, he was on the 1st line. I always thought a 3rd line guy. But, if you put him with a Larkin or Matthew’s, you can cover him up. I'd take Domi, Bertuzzi and some cap room for Marner any day but realistically speaking I think Bertuzzi is going to another team. Domi is iffy. Marner I would not be surprised at all to stay. I think that's the objectively wrong choice, but maybe it isn't as much of a choice as we think.

Can they sit him? Sure. It will still count against the cap, but they could do that. It would signal to the rest of the league that Toronto doesn't honor the contracts they sign, and they are willing to drag their players publicly, but yeah they can do it.

Teams should start adding stipulations in contracts where the amout paid will vary based on team and players performance. If a player signs for 10 million a year, they only get 5 if the team doesnt make the playoffs. Only way to get the full 10 million is making it to the cup final. Since 2018 the Leafs have collectively paid the "core 4" and Rielly approximately 250 MILLION DOLLARS, and what do we have to show for it. One first round win? If this wasnt a sports organization you'd be FIRED for that kinda performance. There needs to be more accountability on the players side, especially if they are getting paid over 5 million a year.

I agree, Leaf's management got themselves into this mess by offering ridiculous contracts. However, it shouldn't absolve the players from being held accountable. In any profession that pays huge amounts of money, it comes with high expectations and performance standards. Why should this be any different? Having a performance based contract isn't about underpaying or exploiting the players, they are still getting a base pay. This is about rewarding the players for success which in this case is going deep in the playoffs. This ensure the team and players are both aligned in their goals and players are motivated to perform their best.
