I don't think Tyrion losing his tongue is the equivalent of Jaime's hand. He's already had to question his identity all his life unlike Jaime who had always been the Lannister golden boy until he lost his hand. Tyrion already evolved and learned to cope with being a dwarf and his family's dismissal before the show started. Taking his tongue away would destroy Tyrion rather than force him to grow. Not to say GRRM wouldn't do it.

Varys wouldn't cut out Tyrion's tongue to keep him quiet about a conspiracy. Tyrion can write! And gesture! That would be a bad plan. If he ever needed to keep the secret he would have to kill Tyrion completely, but I don't think that would happen.

I don't think Varys is the prime contender. He's too smart to miss the observation of tyrion's non-verbal skills. The TWOW Foresaken chapter came out before I wrote the original Quiet Lion reddit post. (spoilers ahead)- In forsaken, Euron cuts out several tongues as part of some kind of magical ritual that appears to change the winds. I think that is a much better motive then keeping tyrion silent.

@MitchellD249

Yeah, I was thinking that and also that Cersei probably wouldn't do it just because she'd just kill him ASAP. I guess there's no particular reason that Euron wouldn't, but that would be a kinda random thing to predict. The textual and thematical clues work for the general idea of him getting his tongue cut out, but I'm not feeling the proposed perpetrators. Could easily just be a nobody like the person who cut off Jaime's hand.

ye I feel like it would be a bit silly if everything seems to fit or was ''foreshadowed'' in some way.. I mean then every quote of every character has some deeper meaning or truth to it since it will one day happen. Which makes the whole thing a bit to dramatic in my taste. I think Therion has been through enough in the books to redevelop himself as who he is, the cutting of his tongue would add little in my mind except that it would fit nicely theme wise but story wise it would be a waste.

It occurs to me that if Martin is planning things out in this detailed fashion, dropping thematic seeds for every twist from the beginning, then it makes perfect sense why writing it takes so long. He'd have to chart the whole thing and then make another set of charts within each branch of it, and then finally when writing refer back to the charts almost constantly. It sounds exhausting.

Jaime had already been at rock bottom in the books before he bounced back. He lost a major battle in the war, got caught and imprisoned, chained to a post for months on end resting on his own shit and piss, murdered his cousin in an attempt to escape, had to endure insults and humiliation, had to make a promise to his enemy in order to flee, just to get caught again and suffer it all over, to eventually get back home and rejected by the one person he loves in the world. Losing his hand was just the icing on the cake.

I don't think this will happen. Jaime losing his hand and becoming a better person makes sense, because he's still relatively intelligent, handsome, charming and the heir to Casterly Rock. Tyrion, on the other hand, is deformed, hated, the 3rd child, and most certainly not a fighter. He's managed to uphold his status only by being clever and quick with his mouth. If he loses his tongue, he's nothing! The point is that Tyrion's tongue is way more important to him than Jaime's sword hand ever truly was to him. If this happens to him, what can he really do with his life? Become a bookkeeper? Nah...

The main problem with this theory is that unlike other characters, Tyrion doesn't really have any other skills other than his ability with words. As a dwarf, he's already in a perilous position in the world of ASOIAF, and were it not for his heritage and his brain he would have died long ago. I don't really see any scenario where Tyrion loses his tongue but doesn't die. Besides, we've already seen him go down into the dumps then rise back up again. It would be an odd writing choice to do it again, and this time there's no real way he could even recover. That being said, I can totally see him getting killed by Cersei or Varys in the end.

I almost feel like he already lost what defined him, when he had to leave King's Landing after he was sentenced to death. He wasn't a real Lannister anymore, had no more Gold, no family behind him. He already lost his title as the Hand of the King when Tywin came to King's Landing. I sure hope he won't lose the tongue as well. Although there probably isn't all that much talking left, in the tv show at least. And what is that about Varys cutting out the tongues of his little birds? On one hand, I don't feel like that fits his character from the tv show, kind of hard to believe that he would cut other people after he got cut. But mainly I'm asking myself, if the birds don't talk, how does he get his news? Does he teach them all to write? What's the point of having birds who can't "sing".

Great Theory but I want to add another name. When Jaime got his hand cut off it was because he tried to save Brienne who is the complete opposite of Jaime at that time. When Cersei got her character stripped away it was because of the High Sparrow who is the complete opposite of Cersei who is evil and does evil things. Now Tyrion is a dwarf who is very intelligent, so the opposite of him is some dumb and tall. Victarion Greyjoy. GRRM has even said himself he is as dumb as a stump. He already has a temper problem. Remember in ADWD he thought the grass sea was an actually sea and someone made a joke about it and he broke his neck with his burnt hand. Tyrion loves to make intelligent comebacks and Victarion isn’t one for sarcasm.

Banks Jamie never returns to being a great soldier though. After losing his hand he learns to be a somewhat effective statesman. Yeah, no. Redefining a warrior through the loss of his hand, or a person who draws power from her fading appearance is not even in the same ballpark as Tyrion losing his tongue would be. As stated, Jamie has had to learn a totally new way of dealing with confrontation, but that is because he still had other abilities to fall back on. Same for Cersei. (Books) Tyrion is in no way a physical character who can fall back on 'other' gifts or abilities to redefine him. Is he suddenly going to become another Payne? A headsman in service to the crown?

I don't think that Tyrion losing his tongue would fit that well into the Lannister pattern. Jaime and Cersei did horrible things with what they lost. Jaime threw Bran out of a window, with the intention to kill. He confessed that if he had found Arya when she was lost in the Trident he would have killed or maimed her. Cersei used her attractiveness to enthrall her brother, effectively ruining his life, seduced other men into making her dirty work, which includes lying under oath and murder and used her status as Queen to order the death of countless children who could have been her murdered husband's bastards. On the other hand, Tyrion might have been rich and noble (which he's not anymore) but he is a dwarf, blamed for the death of his mother, his father gives him a hell of a trauma when he is a teenager and later is victim to a plot to blame and execute him for the murder of his nephew, the little shit he fought for. He even lost his nose already, for the family who would not loose a chance to screw him up. So, he started the story not as privileged as his siblings, and his intelligence and speech are means of survival, not dominance or evil-doing. He pissed off a lot of people, of course, but he never purposely tried to do harm. The body part that best correspond to Jaime's swordhand and Cersei's beauty and sex appeal might be his penis. Tyrion doesn't define himself by it, but it is a force that controls his life, gets him into trouble and seriously hurt other people. As a teenager he rapped Tysha. Because of his lust, he disobeyed his father, brought Shae to King's Landing and that caused a lot of misery. He killed a man to keep his secret. His prostitute friend who fed him information or something was tortured as punishment for his disobedience. His plots wouldn't be found out if not for his keeping of Shae. She was his weakness. Of course, Shae was used as a nail in his coffin when she gave her statement in his trial. And then he became a murderer. Killed his father (don't blame him) and Shae, who he chose to mistake for a girlfriend, a fuck love. Then he rapped that sex slave with wipping marks on her back. Not to mention that part of the reason he was blamed for Joff's death was the fact that he was married to Sansa. Who he thought was a child, not fit to marry, but then decided to marry anyway because he wanted Winterfell, yes, but also because he wanted to get into her panties. His misery is because he is a dwarf, he is ugly and he is rejected by his cruel father and he is controlled by his penis. His tongue saved him more times than got him into trouble. Besides, how could Tyrion possibly reinvent himself without his tongue? Sorry for being redundant, but he is a noseless dwarf with stunted legs, different eye colors, poor, kinslayer, wanted for the murder of the King. Most people can't read, he would not be able to comunicate with anyone. Is he going to get magical powers, ride a dragon? I really hope that is a red herring.

I would hate for this to happen but WOW would it be powerful development for Tyrion. I bet he would have such a hard time dealing with it - shaking constantly, sometimes trying to speak and failing. He might even cry.

One thing I thought of when I saw this notification. Haldon suggested something about how Tyrion should cut off his fingers, toes, hands or feet if they start turning grey, due to greyscale. Tyrion went into the river, and the poisoned water may have gone into his mouth. So it would make sense that he cuts his tongue out in an attempt to save himself if he notices it turning grey

Has anyone also noticed the sheer amount of triangles that are in ASOIAF? Not varried either, just one specific triangle that goes back to Aegon the Conqueror: always the 'Leader', the 'Noble', and the 'Fighter': -Lannisters: Cersi, Jamie, Tyrion -Aegon and his sisters -Jon, Sansa, and Arya(Show only) -Rhaegar, Lyanna,Elia -Dany, Jon, and Tyrion(show only) -Cat, Rickard, Peytr -Lyanna, Rhaegar, Robert

Another fantastic video! Just to add on the whole "losing what makes them who they are" thing, I'd like to add that Tywin also went through this, twice. His wife was the only thing that made him happy and she died in childbirth. Then, his other obsession was his legacy and family name. That was destroyed by Jamie being named a Kingsguard, Cercei going batshit crazy (and not having any non-incest children), and then Tyrion putting the nail in the coffin by murdering him. GRRM sure knows how to write tragedy.

It all comes down to transformation as you said, though Tyrion already went through a transformation. He didn’t lose his tongue, but basically got his nose cut off. Now of course Tyrion’s strongest weapon isn’t his beauty, or nose for that matter. But it did push him to change. Their personalities change.

growth, decay, transformation - being the hand of the king, whoring, reading, drinking, having your fun, then loosing your nose, your position, your love , your family and your home and going to the east to become daenerys' ally (or maybe even finding out that he is the third head of the dragon?) - tyrion has already made his way in that matter.

People were pretty brutal in the old days. That saying "to cut off your (own) nose to spite your face"? That's derived from the pretty common practice of cutting someone's nose off for some perceived insult or whatnot. It was kind of like punching or pushing someone in a bar nowadays. Some dude looks at your lady the wrong way or spills your ale? Pull out your dagger and slice his nose off. Some wench talks shit behind your back at work? Track her down and off with her nose! It was quite common. In fact, part of the civilising of medieval Europe involved forbidding the wearing of one's dagger at the table and the adaption of the blunted, specially made eating knives we use nowadays - people kept knifing each other at dinner over trivial slights and arguments. Next time you go to a nice restaurant and order a steak, notice how you have to have the dagger-like steak knives brought to you and think about how uncouth it would be if you started jabbing at the bread rolls instead of reaching for them with your hands (or tongs, if you're really posh). Our ancestors were brutes who had to be restrained from being bloody thugs with all these rules and etiquette we take for granted now.
