You can check out the details of the EU-Ukraine summit of 2023 here:
www.consilium.europa.eu/en/me...
Also check out this article on Politico by Suzanne Lynch where I first found out about the EU-Ukraine summit:
www.politico.eu/article/volod...
Ukraine and the European Union held a summit in Kyiv at the start of February to talk about Ukraine's EU accession. It's another step towards them becoming a full member, but how close are they? Surely not as close as some other countries like Turkey that have been waiting to join the EU for much longer. Maybe someone should come along and rank them based on how likely it is for each candidate/applicant to join the EU...
btw it totally doesn't say "enclaves and eSclaves" at the end, what are you talking about???

Ya also left out the elephant in the room with Turkiye Erdogan Cyprus has been a problem for decades, but I genuinely think they would’ve been able to find a compromise if Erdogan hadn’t spent the last decade both begging to join, while also making Turkiye more authoritarian, more bellicose with the invasion of Syria, and the collapse of the Livre because he fired everyone who understood basic economics to promote his “alternative.” Views on what causes inflation. Also to be a teeny fair their not completely wrong that there is Islamophobia in a lot of EU members that makes them consider Turkiye not European, and that’s been a big cause of the Euroscepticism you mentioned of “if they don’t want us anyways why should we even bother.” I think once Erdogan and his party are gone this year (which is looking very likely.) I think relations will normalize again, at least I hope anyways.

In like 10 years a lot more euroskeptics will have passed away from old age and many younger people will be of legal voting age in the UK, given how bad the 2020s have been for this country and the fact that Rupert Murdoch will probably also pass away within the next 10 years, the UK might start thinking about rejoining around 2035, especially if the Labour plan to harmonise our legislation with the EU is successful after the next elections in 2024/25.

@@ExtraInExile Actually Turkish Cypriots who has been there before 1973 and their relatives usually support the idea of unification since most of them were originally from the Southern part of Cyprus. Also there are some tensions between Cypriot Turks and the mainlander since the mainland Turks have bit of acondensing, arrogant view towards Cypriot Turks. Like it's not uncommon for a mainlander Turk to act like a Cypriot Turk owes them for saving them. Things like that strains the relations. At this point I am just hoping that Erdoğan will finally lose the elections in May.

About EU n Brexit stuff. Considering I hear alot about how Poland gets alot of power in EU and how they have their own border control rules... Why did Britain even leave EU? One cited reason was immigration but, Poland is in EU, and they have no problems with immigration, they set the rules however they want. Another reason for Brexit that was cited was economic one... And again Poland and many other nations show it to not be the case. So why did it even happen? Also you said that Britain becoming EU member is actually most likeliest, but you haven't explained why. Don't they have to complete the process like the rest of them? Can't some nations block them?
@ExtraInExile
@ExtraInExile Жыл бұрын
The bit about the UK at the end was mostly just a joke to end the video lightheartedly, but I don't actually think that the UK will be able to rejoin in the near future. As for why they left, while Poland does sometimes fall out of line with the economic and immigration policies, they are still expected to follow them, which the UK didn't want to do. They also wanted to have more sovereignty over the rest of Europe.
@belnonaodh1520
@belnonaodh1520 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, a big part was about the 2014 - 2016 European Refugee Crisis from Syria. Poland didn't have as many immigrants as the UK because 1: The UK is seen as one of the wealthiest countries in the world and is seen as a nicer place to live in (dunno if that's true or not, but it has/had that reputation) and 2: Poland just kind of ignored the EU and took in as few refugees as possible, and 3: The UK has a better reputation than Poland for being nice to immigrants. The economic reason is definitely turning out to not be true. There's a lot of debate in the UK about whether this was an inevitable consequence of Brexit, or whether the corrupt politicians are keeping this extra money for themselves, or whether different events like COVID are making it difficult to tell, but maybe that's just coping. I kinda agree it is the easiest country to join, because it has all the requirements of an EU-state by default as a former member, and the only things it falls short on are a few recently-changed laws (as long as the EU gives it the same opt-outs it had in 2015 but that's a big if) Nations may well block the UK, but they might not be able to, since there isn't a lot of framework for countries leaving and then re-joining the EU, and nobody knows if the UK will have to go through the whole process again or not. A lot of countries like Ireland and France would welcome another heavy net contributor to the EU budget. Personally, I feel the main reason Brexit happened in the first place was because it was the right place at the right time: Being with the pound instead of the Euro and having stronger links with the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc, the UK wasn't fully in-sync with the EU. As I said earlier, the refugee crisis turned a lot of British people against the EU. The US and China were seen as much more reliable business partners at the time (bare in mind, this was before even Donald Trump became president). Two of the country's most popular politicians at the time - Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage - were hyping it up. In the long term, the EU are pushing for a federation which a lot of British people don't feel is right for them because they don't trust the EU to look after British interests (like say, if Argentina invaded the Falklands again, would a federal EU army be willing to lay lives on the line to protect a British Overseas Territory?) Many of them weren't exclusive to the UK, and many people said that if Italy held a referendum at the same time it would also have voted to leave. Many of these are the hopes and fears of the UK in 2016, and the chaos of the world since then has rendered it moot and made it a much easier decision now. I've always thought that if the Brexit referendum was passed a couple of years earlier or a couple of years later, the result would be totally different. Sorry for getting so serious over a silly joke outro, but I did appreciate it and found it funny! :D

not only would us brits rejoining the eu stop a lot of political turmoil both withing the uk and towards the eu, which exists because of northern ireland and gibraltar. it would also set the future precedent that noone else should leave the eu. which is a good thing. most of the brexit campaign was built on lie and misinformation anyway, and if it was actually discussed, it would definitely win the favour of a majority of the british people.

I hope fastly, but we already 1 year in so... Also several countries wants to reform the EU by eleminating veto possibilites and pass to a qualified majority system. That will take time and countries like France and Germany said that they will not accept new members if we don't do new reform. Sure 2025 will be Poland presidency year, but I really doubt that there will be all conditions for Ukraine/Moldova/West Balkan membership other than Poland's interest to enlargement. So in the end, Lithuania's presidency in 2027 is the best bet. Especially considering how Montenegro is currently an hybrid democracy and North Macedonia got vetoed by Bulgaria again...

6:47 Why is that a relevant problem? EU members, Romania, Czechia and Slovakia stated they will also move their embassies to Jerusalem, Greece has a consulate in Jerusalem. Also other EU potential members, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, stated they will move their embassies to Jerusalem.

Yeah, but Romania, Czechia and Slovakia were already in the EU before they considered moving their embassy, and it's something that the EU has fought and will fight against. Whether they succeed or not, it's still something that the EU can use to put pressure on Serbia and Kosovo so that they can't join until their embassy is removed from Jerusalem.

@ExtraInExile Serbia does not have an embassy, only Kosovo. All the others declared that they will have in the future. Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova are also applicants that did the same (and Georgia already has a consulate). The EU does not care about that?

Are you implying that the Bulgarian political crisis is caused by France as punishment for the veto on North Macedonia? Or that Bulgaria doesn't have the obligation to protect their minorities in foreign countries?

Hmm as a Romanian there is just one thing nobody talks about. Romania may veto Ukraine (if it survives the war), because they haven't given the Romanian minorities their language rights. Also Moldova has another problem too, it's called Gagauzia. I know it was just a summary, but many people never mention these.

You know what is really sad? Turkey joining EU guarantees the safety of Cyprus and the safety of trade to the country as it wont be locked by any Greek sea expansion since (from my understanding at least) EU countries share certain aspects of mutual borders, which is why British had to negotiate FISHING of all things when they were cutting themselves loose. So, it would solve almost ALL problems with Greece. Yet the president that agrees to pull off Cyprus and tries to give way will never get reelected as he'll be seen as weak. Which is why this wont happen anytime soon.

I'm not sure, but maybe because it sets a precedent. Like if the requirement wasn't there, then the EU bodies couldn't actually push any member states to get their economies in order to join the Eurozone. It would leave the EU without any initiatives.
@ShadowSkryba
@ShadowSkryba Жыл бұрын
@@ExtraInExile As in it wouldn't have enough compelling arguments for deeper integration and desired reform of the economies? Possible. Personally, probably just my inner sceptic speaking, but I think it's a leftover from the more staunchly pro-centralisation group's failed attempt at a solid target for concentrating this area of economic policy in Brussels, but this couldn't be pushed through so they settled for a lack of deadline. I don't have any evidence of this, but it wouldn't be the first time of something like this and I just felt like sharing.

@@ShadowSkryba That's also a pretty good explanation. Might also be possible to fact check that by seeing if there are any articles about it in any EU treaty.

I'd rather be as we are in terms of brexit. It was said to us when we voted that this downturn would happen at first and the downturn isn't caused by brexit as much as it is by the war in ukraine and previously covid. Even if our wconomy doesn't get back to previous levels in the eu I'd rather that than be part of the United states of Europe

Idk how Georgia can even apply, they're in the Middle East, that is not Europe. I say that with no hostility, as a follow Orthodox Christian, I am practically required to like Georgia, but come on, might as well let Algeria and Egypt apply, they're also separated by a large body of water. I honestly wonder what will happen first, Ukraine being officially in the EU or Ukraine being officially in NATO (it kinda is unofficially in NATO anyways).
