Been watching you two for a long time. We have a property in the Santa Cruz Mountains of which we have built into a small fruit tree farm. We are thinking of converting it into a business and you have both been a positive influence in our endeavors. Thank you for what you do, keep bringing the content! All the best, David and Lisa

Hey David. Thank you so much for that generous tip. That's just not something we see very often! I'm so glad to hear you guys are considering turning that small farm into a business. There are just so many advantages to having a small farm holding like this and when you pair that with the tax advantages of a small farm business it's an excellent combo.

I always feared recession. After my first experience with my first recession, I learned to put money aside every week and it worked out when the next two recessions came, of course the third one was more like a depression. So always prepare and save money. The road ahead is going to get really bumpy! Love you both!

Have you ever thought of adding Camp Sites to the edges of your property for additional cash flowing income? Just mark out for campers individual spaces to put their tent or fully contained small RV and their vehicle. They require no utilities. You might consider putting a picnic table and powder room (with composting toilet and tiny sink) in their camping space after you start making some money (then you can charge more). Section off an area for only "One" firepit with room for campers to bring their chairs (later you can build benches) and roast weenies, smores and marshmallows. Also, use Moringa trees to mark the boundaries of each individual campsite as they require little water and grow quickly. They also provide shade. Just give campers reasons to come to your farm like walking trails around the perimeter of your property, self-guided tours of certain sections of your farm, petting zoos, vegetable/fruit stand to buy in-season foods, etc. Your climate is perfect for Moringa trees which thrive in drought weather. It is also a good cash crop. Line your walking and self-guided trails with Moringa trees for shade and low maintenance landscaping. Go online and checkout what other campsites are charging and get excited for new streams of income. Love you guys, your farm and your KZbin channel. Hope this helps. May The Lord richly Bless you! :-)

Ok, Chet I can't help saying this, but I'm pretty sure Dolly Parton is the opposite of flat busted (puns aplenty). 😉 We were trying to keep this one shorter and didn't address future profit centers for the farm. @EdgeofNowhereFarm

Aside from our KZbin and affiliate income (almost all profit except for some capital expense) our biggest profit margin is probably poultry as we try to keep that at or near 50% margin (not accounting for our time). Our bulk programs run at smaller profit percentages (usually between 25 - 30%), so folks are paying less than they would for individual cuts. Eventually we will be selling fruit and that is near 100% margin as well after covering capital expenses. At least, for U-pick where we will not provide packaging.

This is one of those big issue topics. The process of setting up survival (infrastructure, resources) and building the projects that will both regenerate the ecosystem (while generating moola) is so slow, that sometimes it seems very distant. I have to agree. These days folks are so focused on a quick fix or pill to fix what ails them. Slow and steady is just not something most folks want to consider, but it's the way nature works. Sure there are flash floods and earthquakes that make drastic, quick changes, but most times it's a long term process that creates incredible beauty over time.

Pecan and fig being the primary ones. For those we water 2x/week as opposed to once, but at the same amount of water. Last year that was 60 gallons each time we irrigate for everything except pecans. We've had a lot of folks ask us to do that, but we haven't decided for sure if it's something we want to take on. With me (Duane) still working off farm FT we are limited on the amount of time we can invest in any given enterprise. That being said, if you're looking for trees online we do have a few favorite spots to purchase from; www.starkbros.com/ raintreenursery.com/ plantingjustice.org/ bobwellsnursery.com/ www.groworganic.com/ Selection will definitely vary according to season and we're "technically" at the end of the bare root planting season, so options may be pretty thin on some of these sites.

Have you considered installing solar panels for your farm? Why or why not? Thanks!😊

Hey there Frank, great question. We had solar on our last farm and we never saw a financial benefit from it. The up front cost and repair costs (we had to replace a single panel at a cost of over $500 from hail damage) I was estimating to be a break even at best in 25 years which is the lifetime of the system. Now, things have changed a bit from when that was installed back in 2014, but regulations regarding net metering have as well. Eventually we'll look at it again once battery technology is strong enough to get us through our Summer season without being on grid (and not living a spartan lifestyle). It's just not there quite yet to be financially beneficial in my estimation.

You need a quarterly P&L to guage profitability, not your end of year taxes.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Жыл бұрын
Great point Cheryl. We review our P&L monthly as we reconcile our bank statement (Technically our Quickbooks homepage gives us that perpetually). What's encouraging was to see a positive cash flow from month to month as we moved into the early part of last year. Farming/ranching is by nature seasonal, so it's actually quite rare to see positive cash flow outside of a handful of months a year. For example, we purchase pigs in August that are not sold until 6-8 months later. Hence all the different enterprises that allow for monthly cash flow and overall profitability.

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm I have always heard that Hemp contains very little THC and has only been grown for textile purposes, but I've never looked it up. Legally, hemp is defined as a cannabis plant that contains 0.3 percent or less THC, while marijuana is a cannabis plant that contains more than 0.3 percent THC. CBD can be derived from both hemp and marijuana plants." I was thinking only of the textile usage. To do a THC or CBD usage, I think you would have to endure so much regulation. I live on an acre and I sure could use a profit from all the plants I am growing. I have been playing around on how I can accomplish that so I like hearing about how you are making a profit and on what. Again diversity!

Will your beef be organic and grass fed/grass finished?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Жыл бұрын
No, there are no organic processors anywhere near us, so we would not be able to sell as organic. As for finishing, we only do corn finished beef now. We attempted grass finished, but the meat was a bit too tough and the flavor was much stronger than what our customers were wanting. Truly grass finished and then aged for 14 days and you get meat that is much closer to wild game meat.

But can you live on the profit from your farm?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Жыл бұрын
Great question. Lori is here Full Time now and with that we have more than doubled her income from when she was working off farm. I (Duane) still work a full time job off the farm while we continue to build the business. If we continue on this trajectory I would replace my income within the next few years. However, the goal of this farm is to provide retirement income over the long haul and we're just about there now.

Tax time is an awful time for most people 🤕😵‍💫 But you’re getting 🤑 BACK 🎉 Most people don’t realize how much time & work it takes. I ❤ watching how committed you both are to this. Ohh the bloopers 😮Duane , it seems like you have Laurie blushing or jabbing you for words said🤪. You two keep me laughing at the end 😂. In fact, if I was around you much I’d have to carry extra clothes with me cuz I’d probably wet my pants laughing 🤪🤪. I’m old so I can say that ROFLM@O. 👵🏻👩‍🌾❣️

How. UHC land does one need for the gov. To consider it a farm?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Жыл бұрын
Hey there Henry. I assume you're talking about tax breaks for farming? If so, it's complicated here in AZ. The basic requirement is 5 continuous acres under production, but there's a lot that goes into it. For example, we were not eligible to request being classified as AG exempt until this year as you need to be farming the land for at least 3 years.

What has been your most profitable part of your farm?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Жыл бұрын
Great question Mary Ann. I suppose I would have to give the nod to our affiliate arrangements. The main reason is there is essentially no overhead involved in those. KZbin is pretty good, but technically everything that encompasses the farm is part of what draws viewers to us. So all the capital expenses are part of that!

Coerced #TaxationIsTheft. If you think about it, it would be really weird if a stranger on the street came up and asked that you give them all the details of your financial accounting. It would be questionable if they told you that they wanted you to give them some of their money. (Even if they "promised" they would do some good things with that money). It would be immoral if they threatened to steal, hurt, or imprison you if you didn't give them the money they asked for. (Even worse if they actually did those things. The strangers in Washington DC have no more power or right to know how much you earn, and no more right to your property (money) than a stranger you pass on the street. Even if a bunch of people belonged to an organization that believed such actions were legitimate. #NaturalRights #NonAggressionPrinciple
