The other problem is that the mind disease that is "Fresh" has been dominating ever since Classic launched. Boosting and then collapsing server after server. One reason why Turtle is so popular atm is the longeviity. People can take breaks for months or years and still come back to their same characters.

In my opinion a project should offer two servers. One that stays at 1.12.1, but with some cool events once in a while and other temporary additions to keep it populated (even low lvl stuff, so leveling stays alive). The other server will continuously be reset after all content is cleared, maybe with a char transfer possibility to the other server.

You hit the nail on the head with the fact that community is the biggest difference. What modern classic players do not want to admit, is that back in the day AND in Nostalrius, people did NOT pick the easiest way to get the rewards, aka GDKP. There WERE some people who did that, for example there was a warlock in our guild who literally "bought" all accounts with full gear with real life money, so he does not need to raid all over from start with a new char, but those people would maybe make 1% of playerbase. People who wanted to skip everything the fast as possible to get the gear like in GDKP system, were extremely rare. That was why game was waaaaaaaaay more interesting and fun, because people actually wanted to play together with friends, make new friends, and finish that raid and get the purple with actual people they called friends. So even if that raid took twice as long as today, even if there were 10 wipes, people did not care much because it was hell a lot of a fun, doing things with friends. That do not exist anymore, because everyone want to play "alone" and get geared with GDKP.

Except that, GDKP is NOT the easiest way to gear a character, if, 1. The BOTS are banned so much that the server management receives death threats and DDOS attacks ( which happened to Nost ) and 2. RMT is being enforced and GM's perform checks with big transfers, much like an ordinary RL bank. In this case, GDKP, is honorable and shows how much somebody has played, manually, and actually being logged on and spending time on the server and it's community. Like it was on Nost. The current player base has this problem upside down. The problem starts and ends with botting and automated game play.

I played Vanilla back in the day, with over 120 played days on my main ( at lvl 60 ) and without obtaining "the best" gear. I played because the game was fun. 3. Yes. If a server destroys botting and automated game play ( such as afk bots in AV ) and bans advanced "what if" macros, then, it's honorable to bid with gold, because that means that you have played the game for a thousand hours, in order to bid on a rare epic. This ( in turn ) helps the players that can't play for days and that also can't RMT, such like on Nost. GDKP's may be needed in todays stressed environment, but they are only needed if there isn't botting, because with general and wide spread botting there is no need to join a GDKP in order to obtain gold, you can just auto bot and avoid playing the game altogether. It's the BOTS that are killing Vanilla, not GDKP and not even RMT as you can trade an RL friend some cash in order to get vast amounts of gold in the game, and nobody can stop IRL RMT, not even the IRS can stop that, but a f.. retard with a PC from the 90's can stop botting. The only issue is, Blizzard is a bot company, they are actively supporting automated game play and whales, and not only in WoW.

I played on Nostalrius and it really was the closest to actual vanilla WoW. You could make friends and team up with people to do quests. The world was busy and alive, it had players that just enjoyed the game instead of people trying to minmax for stream views. Of course there was those people, but not to the same extent. Your opinion is pretty spot on, it's easy to play vanilla WoW now, but to get the same feeling and experience is nearly impossible

I think Nost was an one-time experience. I personally didn't get to experience real vanilla so Nost was probably to me what vanilla was to most others. But it was a time during which most people were playing vanilla for the first time or rediscovering it after a 10 year break. It still had that magic because a lot of people were clueless. Imagine being a new player now, you're just behind because everyone knows everything already. I absolutely cherish my Nost memories and would give a lot to relive these times again, it's just impossible in 2023 in my opinion.

I've downloaded 4 different clients in the past 6 weeks. I've played few minutes on each, immediately bored, logged out and deleted the client. I came to a conclusion that after 2 decades my addiction is finally dead and I'm really happy for it. What made it great was playing together with friends. Friends whom now all either married, or living overseas or with kids. This is it, it's over for me and time to really move on! I guess I will dive in reading Tolkien and more fantasy books again rather than playing WoW or hack any gaming except Hearthstone. I used to play on a really shitty WotLK server, the Game Master used to treat people like garbage, some gms wanted to help you and others treated you in the same way of the game master or worst, the community is extremelly toxic most of the time, Ulduar is closed because some bugs that the staff don't want to solve since emmm 2016. Very awful right? But do you know how they solved the gdkp and in some cases the toxicity problem and believed or not people keep playing there because of that? Well let me translate some points of the server normatives, it is an spanish server by the way. Quote: "-The purchase, sale or exchange of accounts is not allowed, these accounts will be eliminated and your IP will possibly be penalized. -Buying or selling items for real money or gold is not allowed. -Agreements for drops with real money or gold is not allowed. (The account will be deleted and the IP will be blocked). -The victory pact in arenas is not allowed, as is entering arenas or bgs and not participating in them, it will be sanctioned with a permanent ban on the account". How does this work in game? Well if someone sells an item for gold or real money, you can take some screenshots of who won the item you need, that you /roll. And, this is interesting because if the player who won the item already have that item, an alert will appear on the chat box saying "This player already have the item blah blah on his bags or in the bank". The staff just need that in order to ban those people, and believed or not, they do it as soon as possible. First, they delete that item from his inventory, then they delete another item like a trinket just to say "never do it again". No, I'm not making this. I think this is the reason why there are a lot of people playing every day there, even with all those things I mentioned. I heard you to saying "It is impossible to track gdkps raids in wotlk classic" . Mmmm not necessarily as you see. If people want a new Nostalrius like server, the gms have to implement this kind of rules. In my humble opinion. Enjoy you vacations ^^

But reality was many people left and may or may not have come back for different phases/content releases. That's the problem with any of these rehashed itterations of wow. It will never be like the first time around when we didn't know what was coming next patch. There's a vibrant community of people that like leveling over and over, but that gets old on an old server. They want the challenge of fresh without Naxx geared people and fully developed economy. You have others that just want to raid log. Some do Naxx once and call the game completed. Others want to keep going till full bis on all classes and races. Can't stuff them all on the same server and expect them all to be happy. Fresh will crave fresh and the people that want to farm naxx forever will cry server has died when everyone else has left....

I've played on warmane during frostmourne season 3 and had a blast from beginning to end but the community is a mixed bag,if you play on icecrown you won't go far without a guild,don't even think about pug runs cuz you ain't getting far,ppl will often ask you to be overgeared to enter certain instances(raids),ppl leave after one wipe wasting your time I haven't played there much but it didn't took long too see how things are going,sadly frostmourne season 4 isn't gonna happen anytime soon,the experience is much better through progression imo.

Resumes don't matter. Private servers are not companies. The proof is in the pudding. A private server needs money to pay for the hardware, ISP and for banning the BOTS. You need approx. 10 BOT banners 24/7 and those people need a couple of hundred USD/month to allocate enough "give a fucks" to the project. Thus. A cosmetic "cash shop" is the minimum level of funding, in order to destroy the bots and pay for a DDOS protection, which is worse in 2023 than it has ever been. Nost was reliant on donations to pay for the DDOS protection. You can't expect the future projects to receive donations, because Internet donations have been ruined by endless scamming and vaporware. A future Nost server needs an iron fist management. Even harder on banning than Nost and they need more funding than Nost, to evade Blizzards influence and to destroy the current community which is max toxic and used to being catered to.

What is so bad about the 1.12.1 client? I am not an expert on such things, I have been playing Turtle WoW for a bit now. Seems fun, but as a more PvP player I am not sure if I will have any fun in the end game there. Epoch WoW has been on my radar, they are having huge beta testing turn outs. It is Vanilla+ rebuilt on the WoTLK client, with classes and builds being more like TBC.

@@AdioAurel I play on a PC, hooked up to a 43" TV and with an Xbox Controller. Currently my resolution is set to 1920 x 1080 Wide, which is the max setting in Turtle WoW it seems. I even run an older, 4.9.1 ReShade, since it is known to work better for most older games, for extra color, sharpness and contrast.

People are opportunistic. We don't want a boost or GDKP but if there is we will use it and very very very rarely take a moral stance of some sorts. On smaller clusters of Classic Era you have zero commercialization while on bigger its all over the place. Private servers are also way smaller than full classic era realm so it's even less likely it would get monetized (and as it's small it can be moderated). Nostalrius for it size had lag, problems and obsiously bugs. Now we have less bugs and even new features like in Turtle or new development like Epoch, yet if a private server would grow to a size of few servers it would quite costly to run and would attract way more attention from Blizzard which could make it hard to operate - do players pay a sub? do it have an aggresive cash shop?

The only server that is coming close to the Nostalrius playerbase from back in the day is Chromiecraft. Unfortunately that one is a PTE development server - so it won't get the number of players to be in the same league as Nost

Tbh i have zero trust in private server teams. I have seen many servers fail and was part of projects that failed and it always was due to money being stolen or someone in the team having relationship drama with another team member, 90% of projects end that way. I would only play and take part in a server again if it was lead transparently and completely FOSS so that the mentioned things dont happen and it is difficult to bent over the community. Actually i would be pretty hyped to start coding around wow again, it has been years.

I played Kronos 1 on launch. Got to 60. Got pre-raid BiS and then Nost got shut down. So, a ton of players flooded Kronos. Kronos decided to not only open up another server, but then also made an experience boost of x7 exp...and this temp boost affected the original Kronos server as well. Everyone made easy gold farming alts AND there were players who had no idea how to play that hit 60. They ruined that server and their reputation after that. They ruined it so much that they had to rush out a Kronos 3 lmao. That was a very sad turn of events.

yea ll private servers are and were p2w every one that raided bought wow gold from 3rd party sites. or paid the private server for the items there are just as scummy things on private servers as there is on blizzard servers.

I just want Vanilla with wotlk skills and talents with upgraded boss fights in vanilla and dungeoun scaled properly to new skills etc. Max level 60 but we get 1 talent point from level 1 and on, then at level 10 we get 2 talent points, 20 2 talents, 30 2 talents etc. Thats 71 points. If im not mistaken. Kaboom. More variety. Deeper. And we still get the classic feel by upgrading mobs. I mean itll be a new fresh experience imo. Those who didnt get to play bc and wotlk get to use those skills. I mean wotlk was the best expansion. Everything was viable and fun. We need new mechanics for boss fights. New things to keep old fights fresh. Imagine fighting Onyxia and instead of tank spank. As soon as you enter, she hits raid with an aoe debuff. Aura Of The Dragonkin- Decreases Damage of all enemies by 20% and increases fire damage by 30%. 15% health down, she Cast "Engulfing Flame Whelps" Summouns 4 flaming whelps to Onyxia sides. Whelps cause aoe fire.famage ticks to anyone in 20 yard radius. For every whelp that goes down Onyxia gains 5% damage. While Whelps are active no fear can be used. Etc etc etc. God that would be awesome

@@hicksuofficial i really wanna come back to WoW. But it has changed so much. I finished BC and Wotlk. But for classic i started when BC was announced and decided to level my ass off. My college roommate played at the time and I watched him most of the time when I was free I even leveled a few characters for fun and farmed stuff for him but i really got in hardcore when bc came out. Is duskhaven classic? Thats what I wanna experience

i doubt it because people seem to be no longer interested in actual blizzlike servers (having bots and other custom nonsense is not blizzlike get over yourselves you cretins) , everything that releases these days is high rate/custom , the last proper blizzlike server that released was probably netherwing around 2019 , since then it just goes downhill , it seems to me the era of the proper blizzlike server is ending and the era of the custom server with high rates is coming , but we shall see what happens down the line , and on top of all this today you cant really be sure if the server that just launched will survive for long enough for people to say its worth playing , and dont get me started on all of the min maxing cancer that has taken root everywhere , warmane being a prime example

We won't. Time has passed. I mean there are still people who wanna play vanilla, but there won't ever be a server like nostalrius and lights hope that attracts as many people as they did back in the day. Imo people lost hype for classic. Maybe in 5 years or so and when there aren't alternatives to play classic, people might get attracted again
