___________
My heart was stolen by a blind pickpocket
In the deep city streets in the summer of 2012
And I never even saw her face
My dreams were shattered like a stained glass window
Jesus in Pieces, I believe I threw a brick right through Him
But my memory could not be saved
It just seems unlikely that it's me who was to blame
So I bookmark my DSM 'cause I need to remember my place
This is not enough, this is not enough to prove it yet
No, I need to hit the bottom
This is not enough, this is not enough to prove it yet
No, I need to hit the bottom
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Take you with me

My soul was crushed like a tall boy
Underneath the boots on the curb
And I’m still picking up my molars
And putting them back in my face
My name was soiled by a last call spill
With a backwash swill and the blackout killed me
Sober on impact from a fall from grace

Take the road on higher ground
And tell me “Don’t look down! You’ll fall and break your back”
But that just reminds me how there’s more to be found beneath the black
This is not enough, this is not enough to prove it yet
No, I need to hit the bottom
This is not enough, this is not enough to prove it yet
No, I need to hit the bottom
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Take you with me

Bottle, well, or barrel? All are empty
Dug, or drank, or poured it out
When too much is not enough there’s plenty
More where that came from around
Looking up we see the point of entry
Between where we are and we’ve been
Looking up I could say Heaven sent me
Hand me my shovel, I’m going in
Looking up we see the point of entry
Between where we are and we’ve been
Looking up I could say Heaven sent me
Hand me my shovel, I’m going in
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Gotta gotta get, gotta gotta get, gotta get
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Gotta gotta get, gotta gotta get, gotta get
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Gotta gotta get, gotta gotta get, gotta get
Gotta get to the bottom of this
If it kills me
Gotta gotta get, gotta ow!
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Gotta get to the bottom of this
Gotta get to the bottom of this
If it kills me
This is not enough, this is not enough, not enough to prove it yet
No, I need to hit the bottom
This is not enough, this is not enough, not enough to prove it yet
No, I need to hit the bottom
This is not enough, this is not enough, not enough to prove it yet
No, I need to hit the bottom
This is not enough, this is not enough, not enough to prove it yet
No, I need to hit the bottom

LORD, I’ve never experienced it firsthand but ableist doctors/therapists must be the WORST. Like-how do you study mental illness or just illness in general yet have the audacity to not believe your patients when they tell you they need help??? Like I get people fake disorders and disabilities all the time but if someone is literally *paying* to see and get help from you then at that point they shouldn’t be ignored and brushed off and you should at least TRY to help them and acknowledge their issues.

I like to think this is about an unstable man trying to prove his innocence about a murder he’s done, but doesn’t realize he’s already cleared as a suspect. So he keeps trying to scrounge up as much evidence to prove himself, but all it does is make the detectives more suspicious, reinforcing him to make up more evidence. At one point he has a breakdown, digging up the body he buried to “prove his innocence”, causing him to be found guilty and put into an asylum. The first half is his rambling alibis, and the second half is him digging the body up.

I really like a lot of the interpretations for this song, but one that I think it could be is someone trying to get a diagnosis for something while dealing with ableist and just not good doctors, and feeling like they have to purposely make themselves worse so that people will finally take them seriously. The lyric about the bookmarked DSM kinda also goes along with that

The entire album deals with mental illness, I think. A lot of "I don't remember myself" and explicitly mentioning various disorders like cotards and cagras. I think it has a heavy dose of "I have to get worse before I deserve to get better", but that might just be me projecting.

Tis a good song for a detective dissillusioned with the sins of humanity, terrified of looking into that black void. Yet he does anyways because it's the one thing that will distinguish him from his twisted brethren the willpower to uphold what little morsels of justice he can.

The song makes me think of like seeing how bad things can get and wanting to prove to yourself that you're fucked up but taking some joy in it like yeah things are bad now and it's not getting any better so how much worse can I get. And the idea of reaching a bottom and the sound of smashing glass could also relate to reaching the end of a drink, so it's also to do with that ig

as far as i'm aware, it's about a period in will wood's life when he was not in a good place mentally and taking a lot of drugs (2012, a year he said he has no memory of). "getting to the bottom of this" could be in reference to "hitting rock bottom" (often said in reference to addiction). perhaps either wondering how low he can get or needing to get to his lowest to prove to himself he needs help

I think this song feels like a detective trying to get justice for a loved one who was murdered but keeps getting told that theres not enough evidence to hold the person accountable. even though the detective has very good reasons he keeps getting declined because the person who did it is part of a rich and powerful family so his family gets him out of punishment. So the detective keeps searching for more evidence untill he goes insane and eventually dies.

Am I the only one who interprets this song as a failing lawyer that finally has a client, because they have failed too many trials, and they think it's their last chance to redeem themself and finally win a trial,so that their reputation would be better and their career would be saved? The line 'this is not enough to prove it yet' is like the lawyer is trying to prove their client's innocence. 'the point of entry' is the start of their career. I can also see that they go mad over this trial, wanting to win to the point of threatening their client ('take you with me') and prepare su1cide ('hand me my shovel,I'm going in') if they loose once more. Edit: plus, the start of the song: "My heart was stolen by a blind pickpocket,in the deep city streets in the summer of 2012": could indicate a trial they had lost in,well, summer 2012. "My dreams were shattered like a stained glass window": their dreams of being a good lawyer. "It just seems unlikely that it's me who was to blame": they mean they aren't to blame for their reputation as a lawyer becoming worse and worse.

Most often, no one will care about your pain until it's a problem for more than just yourself, until it's at its absolute threshold. Hence the digging. I would say I'm very high functioning in my issues, but the problem with that is you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who cares or believes that you're struggling. When this happens you realize how alone you truly are. Are you depressed enough if you haven't stopped entirely? Are you manic enough if you aren't a problem? Are you traumatized enough if you can be productive? Are you anxious enough if you aren't self-medicating? Are you ill enough if it isn't fatal? Is it a problem if it's only beginning? Aiming for that sweet sweet perfection and admiration in just how tolerable you are, you see, will not get you anywhere. Acting out is what draws attention. When you take the path of the façade, pretending to be something you're not, you may eventually end up acting for the amusement of others in order to bolster your own need for attention and connection. When you no longer have the will to live and you're running on empty you will be living for other people. You will be nothing but a character. It's addictive, feeling worth something, but if you fall from grace, then what will you have left? Is it worth it? Where I'm at, I can't imagine stopping. I've flown too high. Hitting the bottom is often necessary to get help. Prevention would be more effective, but it's only those doing the worst and the best that will be focused on, like it is in a lot of other areas. What's the incentive to keep yourself afloat indefinitely beyond having no self respect? Anyway, hey, someone acknowledged it. And it's groovy.

id like to think this song is about a defense attorney trying to defend his client, who is his wife, even though shes guilty and he saw her murder the victim but cant remember. he maybe even lies a bit to get her out of trouble even though it goes against his morals. he sorta drives himself insane with the case and by the end hes gone crazy and remembers seeing his wife murder 💔

Do we have any confirmation on what this song is actually about? Well since everyone’s doing it I’ll share my interpretation, it’s mostly based on a similar experience I had a couple years ago So, sounds to me like something happened in 2012 (this album has a big theme of something bad going on in 2012 so I think that’s safe) that left will wood feeling like something was deeply wrong with him, so in this song he cracks open a dsm and obsessively searches through it for a mental illness to cover this pain in him, getting increasingly panicked as it seems like he can make basically any illness fit if he just searches in the right room of his mind. Eventually he gets up and leaves the dsm open on the floor as he stumbles to bed early in the morning, still trying to figure out himself but now far too tired to keep looking, his last thought before going unconscious is of the need to still get to the bottom of what’s wrong with him So yeah obviously based very heavily on my experience, but i think it fits at least somewhat

For me, this song is about addiction. I guess it’s sort of like front street with “since nobody will tell me where bastards so, I’ll see for myself”, except it’s about addiction instead of rape. Curiosity killed the cat. You refuse to accept the fact that you’re addicted, and you keep taking more and more. It’s never enough proof. You keep digging yourself into this grave, deeper and deeper, until you start to like it. It’s almost comforting, away from all of the troubles of life. And so, you’ll dig deeper, just because you can. And because you can, you have to.
