As a lot of people have already pointed out, Laplace's Demon is a thought experiment regarding an entity who knows the characteristics of every particle and is therefor able to predict the future with 100% certainty- therefor no free will, etc. However, some commenters think that the title is hinting to the opposite of this- that the universe isn't deterministic- but that clearly isn't what Will Wood is trying to say here. I think that the wordplay of reversing Demon to Angel is not a reversal of the message or meaning of Laplace's Demon, but a reversal of it's emotional resonance. When someone comes to the realization that the universe is deterministic, it's very easy to get a sense of depression and the idea that lack of free will, and lack of meaning, is inherently disappointing. However the main character in this song, led on by the background voices, instead takes on the opposite meaning- their previous wrongdoings were nothing more than moral chemicals and particles acting in such a way that led them to do whatever they had done. "It's the norm for animals, it's the norm for chemicals, it's the norm for particles": "Well, aren't we just made of chemicals and particles?". Before I end this spicy take, I just wanted to say that this is one of my absolute favorite songs ever- and definitely my favorite from Will Wood. The topic is so interesting and so brilliantly well done here- the wordplay and music are incredible. I've never seen a song use the background vocals as they are here, almost like a devil-on-your-shoulder type thing.

I've been thinking why the title of this song is Laplace's Angel. There is such a thing as Laplace's demon. Where "someone" (the demon) can determine the future of of the greatest bodies and the smallest atoms by knowing the past and present knowledge of every position of the atom and every force that set nature in motion. So while Laplace's Demon determines the fate of bodies by the position of atoms and the forces that move them, Laplace's Angel determines the fate of a person's morality by the person's circumstances and choices.

Adding on to this 2 year old comment, I find it interesting that Laplace's demon is a being of order and hyper organization This implies that Laplace's angel, in contrast, is a being of utter chaos and disarrangement Which fits the vibes pretty well for this song lol

I've been reading the comments talking about song's meaning and figuring out what Laplace's Angel is. Here's my swing. I'm thinking that this song is actually about Laplace's Demon. Demons are still Angels but just bad ones. However if there was a Demon that could know the future by knowing every atom the past, then in that perspective true morality doesn't exist. It's not really a demon, but an angel with absolute certainty.
