I hate when even the left refers to AOC as a "former bartender". Yes, she worked as a bartender like all of us have done various jobs while in school. She has advanced degrees in economics and geopolitics. Referring to her as "just a bartender" robs her of her actual qualifications and just helps the right's narrative that she is not qualified. She went to university for this job. She is very qualified. Her past employment to pay rent is irrelevant. I had a job literally shoveling shit. That has no bearing on my qualifications as a software engineer. That said, AOC IS a good example of someone who did not have billionaires funding her being elected to Congress. MTG and Lauren Boebert did not. These are not the same. MTG actually IS rich. She is a multi-millionaire.

Dominic doesn't really care. Some of these people will actually come out and say that disabled people are "useless eaters." The moment you interact with ANYONE, which we are wont to do as a social species, the entire model instantly falls apart. Dominic talked about going to a store to get food; well, what if the store owner wants to deny you food, just because? That’s his right. You can then unalive him, because that’s your right. Right? Let's just say he's "not exceptionally intelligent," on top of being really self-centered. He apparently feels relatively comfortable now, and he's more concerned with having to pay taxes than with other entities mistreating him and especially other people. He doesn't seem to be concerned about being disabled, his employer and most other potential employers mistreating him (with compensation, required hours, unnecessarily hazardous work environment, harassment, etc.), businesses committing consumer fraud or causing undue harm with their products or services, being targeted by other regular people for his property or just to attack him, no one in particular to manage drinking water, sewage, flooding, erosion, wildfires, other natural disasters, auto traffic, air travel, etc. These people grossly exaggerate their ability to fend for themselves, they fail to take into account how things were before the government regulation that we have today, and they're woefully ignorant of how complex society is (or they promote their ideology but then admit that they want some government services when questioned about them). EDIT: And I'll point out that he talked about going to the store and buying things with his money and having more of it without taxes - but where would money come from without government? And we just experienced supply chain issues during and after the pandemic. We couldn't buy some things at some times during the pandemic, and prices have been artificially inflated since the pandemic because companies found out they could charge more and still sell their products and services. Would he just go to another planet with lower prices?

It is important to clarify the debate starting at 2:49:35. The first law of thermodynamics CANNOT be applied to close systems, because the first law treats precisely about EXCHANGES of energy between a system and its environment. If the system is closed, those exchanges could not occur, by definition. In precise terms, the first law declares that, if there are changes in the interal energy of a system, it is because it either performed work on its environment, (e.g. an expanding baloon pushing the air around it) or received heat from that environment. Since these are the ONLY forms to account for energy changes, there is an implicit conclusion that no energy is being spontanteously created or destroyed inside the system, and from it there comes the coloquial description of the first law as "matter or energy cannot be created or destroyed".

The nuance present in a vast interconnected society of both competing and sympathetic systems is lost on them. I can assure you that after 2 hours of arguing their solution for dispute resolution between individuals is armed insurance companies. And some of them actually believe this is somehow better than a democratically elected government. Of course none of them have an answer as to how roads get built. How lighting is put onto roads, rail and transport infrastructure, etc. Sam Seder always does a fantastic job destroying ridiculous libertarian arguments with a few simple questions. At the end of the day, most of them are either criminals or people who are born rich and don't want to pay taxes and that informs their entire worldview. The one thing taxes do if nothing else is to provision the government and stand up the currency. Of course they do much more than that but libertarians can't understand that

This typical response to the Complexity argument isn’t ideal. It’s not about simple or complex. The real question is: Can complexity ONLY arise from deliberate design or are there potential natural mechanisms (like natural selection acting on a reproductive cycle). That’s what the theist would need to rule out in order to conclude design just based on complexity. That’s the real issue. The complexity is there. Now what are the potential and demonstrable explanations. Otherwise it’s like saying the butler did it, because a person is really dead.

I have to disagree, Matt. I think people knew what Trump was about. They liked that he was mean and racist. They thought they were gonna be safe because they were on his team. Now they are finding out. I, personally, am glad. I hope they all get their comeuppance. They aren't stupid, dumb or ill informed. The majority are just plain ole mean.

Hey Dominic, how will you protect yourself against a gang of robbers robbing everyone in broad daylight? You come together and fund defence, that's the government. By virtue of its style even people who don't agree that they should be protected are being illogical but are still getting protected because of that defense. That's why you get to vote on policies and decide what rights should be protected so that even people who are illogical can pay based on consensus. And also if you're marginalized and are not able to buy food shelter, etc etc how will you live? You'll die, how will you protect yourself then?

It doesn't stand for anything in particular. It's made up of over 300M people with various opinions, goals, etc. That's what many Americans have failed to understand. We're not "safe" because of culture, tradition, or even law. There isn't a collective "We" who are decent people, interested in the common good, supportive of "freedom, democracy, etc." Just as more oppressive forms and implementations of government have appealed to some people in other countries now and to people in past generations - more oppressive government appeals to some Americans now. Just as some entities have seized power in other countries and in our our own in the past, some entities want to do it now and some entities have. A lot of Americans have been way too comfortable and have even expected things to automatically get better over time. But that's not how the world works - we have to make things better and we have to counter the forces (including natural forces) that would make things worse. "Oh, really bad things can't happen here" is no protection, and really bad things have already happened here (jen-o-syde, slavery, a century of racial terrorism after the Civil War, forced sterilization of low income people - including white people - for decades in the 20th century, taking Native American children from their families and forcing them into abusive residential schools in other states, Japanese Americans forced into internment camps with their property seized and auctioned off to white people, separating Hispanic children from their families at the southern border - including lawful asylum seekers - and not even bothering to keep track of them, the US. government selling drugs to black Americans to fund military operations in South America, putting low income black and brown people in a police state in urban areas, etc.).
@TheHutRestaurantКүн бұрын
@@loki2240 yes, the government has done shitty things - that doesn't mean it's supposed to. It's supposed to be of the people, for the people, and by the people. The fact that the words "rich" and "white" got shoved in there doesn't negate the fact that the original premise was if not good, then better than most, if not all of the other governments on the planet. I see your point, though. The question then becomes what can be done now to change this horrible course we're on. It seems like we're probably doomed, and worse than that, we probably deserve to be. I thank my younger self everyday for deciding to not have children. If I had children and grandchildren right now, I'd be f**king mortified.
@loki2240Күн бұрын
@@TheHutRestaurant - Again, conceptions of what the government is and isn't supposed to do don't actually protect us from what the government has done or will do. It ultimately comes down to power and keeping it out of the hands of foul people. Many on the right have a better understanding of that, and that's why they've been so committed to amassing power (even despite their conflicting interests and goals). But they don't understand that they won't be safe either from various RW factions or from infighting within their own faction(s). When your identity is based upon opposing "others," you'll likely invent "others" if you have none (or if you just tire of oppressing "the same old others"). Also, no one can be pure enough for zealots/ extremists.

What real anarchists understand, unlike so called anarcho-capitalists like Dominic is that while government power is a power hierarchy that can be used oppressively it isn't the only on. Capitalism and money is a much more important power hierarchy on our society and if you want to ensure freedom, you have to come up with a model that protects people from exploitation through that hierarchy as well. His model ultimately leads to feudalism, which in every way is a less free system than representative democracy.

I "looked for god" for over 20 years. No, not the Christian god, I looked for *many* gods, I looked for *any* gods, I looked for various flavors of god, hoping at least *ONE* would step up, present itself in an undeniable way, and make me believe. It simply never happened, despite begging, pleading, practicing rituals, praying, etc. There's only one religion that ever resonated with me, it's a pagan belief system, and while I had a few warm fuzzies from it, I couldn't justify to myself belief in it based on that (let alone justify to anyone else). No matter how badly I wanted it, and I was freaking *desperate* for it, I just couldn't. I still have good feelings for it, I still like the mythology and symbolism, and it still holds my interest, but my want and hope doesn't make it real.

The psch student caller had an interesting question but I think the even more interesting question is should god/religion be used as a disqualifying factor when considering a mental diagnosis. I haven't read the latest DSM but I know in previous versions if you were diagnosing certain conditions, like hallucinations IIRC, if the patient claimed the were hearing god they would not qualify for the diagnosis same with if they had religious reasons for self harming behavior IIRC. I would argue that wither certain thoughts or behaviors are problematic or abnormal is irrespective of religion. Wither your reason is popular or not doesn't factor in to it. But it is a very interesting question especially when you get down to much more minor 'problems' where someone is being held back by religious dogma. Is it fair game for a therapist to suggest that maybe that dogma isn't rational?
