Never seen this series before, but, oh my word, how homophobic and stereotypical. And the idea that you're going to sleep with someone because you *don't* love them and that makes it somehow okay?!?
@michalinaokrent66726 ай бұрын
The "sleep with someone because you don't love them" is stemming from the patriarchal toxic macho mentality. The show was made a quarter century ago AND portrayed Will's coming to realization that he's gay even about a decade earlier. Back then it was drilled into most young men's minds that they only have value if they have sex with women. I rememeber seeing a documentary about gay men years ago in which one guy, then in his 60s-70s, recalled how as a young man he decided to become a (catholic = celibate) priest. He didn't quite realize at that young age that he was gay or what being gay really meant, but since he wasn't attracted to women, he took it a a sign of being called to be a priest. Then, when he started having feelings/desire for some of his [male] co-students at the priest college he at first was terrified and confused and tried to pray it away etc, then in the end he decided, as a last resort (!!!) to go to a brothel (with female prostitutes) as he thought that having sex with a woman "might heal him" - !!! I cannot remember if he said he "completed" his trial at the brothel or just left when a prostitute started doing what he hired her for, but he then realized that he's gay and there's no point trying to "heal it", esp in such a way, so he left the priests' college and eventually settled with a gay partner that he was then with for decades. In "Will & Grace" the "one last try" Will did with Diane was based on that kind of deep fear that being gay would mean he "has no value". I consider sex without love stupid and pointless, drunk sex even stupider, but I guess when both parties were equally drunk and equally determined to have sex with one another, then they didn't get hurt. Will's explanation to Grace that he slept with that other woman "because he didn't love her" meant, I think, that since he knew Grace loved him (emotionally and sexually), it wouldn't be fair for him to give her less in bed than she deserved, whereas Diane only cared for sex so doing the gymnastics with her couldn't have possibly wronged her. Marrying someone who loves you not just spiritually/emotionally/as a friend but also sexually when you are not as fully invested in all aspects of the relationaship/marriage as them is a terrible betrayal. Will didn't want to betray Grace in that way. Treating sex with her as a sort of a test for his orientation would have also been a betrayal and he didn't want to do that either. It makes sense. In this scene where Grace asks him why he didn't do it with her she is feeling betrayed but it's probably because her old sexual feelings for him got hurt, in retrospect, or maybe even her ego based in [patriarchal, again] belief that if a man "rejects" a woman sexually, she has no value. Remember the "college times" of Will and Grace happened about half a century ago...

@@michalinaokrent6672 Love your analysis. Nice job. The only thing I'd add is that we can't excuse it for the times - plenty of people 25 years ago were saying that these kind of actions and approaches were not okay.
