Best dog I ever had was a Rottie. She had a very calm temperment ... nothing bothered her. We got into obedience training and she was a certified by Therapy Dogs International. I took her to schools and nursing homes. So gentle ... I remember my 3 yr old granddaughter resting her head on the dog while eating popcorn one at a time .... "One for me, and one for Molly".

As a new dog owner who has always adored and dreamed of owning a rottweiler, they are indeed a huge challenge. I did months of research, prepping, and planning before getting my rottie. My wife and i drove several hours to get our 10 week old girl from a reputable breeder. We started training from day 1. We provided a strict daily regimen that included hours of training and exercise, including many sessions with professional rottweiler trainers who would train us as much as our rottie. They are a LOT of work, but we were rewarded with an absolutely loyal and obedient dog who would give her life for us without a second thought. Indeed, as a novice, if you cannot dedicate 4+ hours a day to your rottie for at least the first year of ownership, and do not have access to professional guidance, i would not recommending owning one. But, if you're truly willing to put in the work, the reward is worth it!

This is an excellent analysis of the Rottweiler temperament. I have a 3.5 year old, in-tact male who fits this description to a T. My Rottie, unequivocally, has the strongest prey drive and the most dominant disposition I've ever witnessed in a dog. He's a gentleman in the home and very obedient, but can go from docile to warrior-mode in an instant.

I have to agree that they are a natural guardians. I´ve had two rotties and while the first one more on the dominating side the current one is a goofball. He´s always willing to play with anyone. Scares people when they meet him but quite quick they see how good he is. The other day though he did show that he needs no training to be a guard dog. I was unwell to say the least but I had to take him for walk. We usually play with his ball or sticks but this time I just sat on bench and raised my legs. He came near me and sat next to me. Just as I was going to sit up he got all tense and took the posture I know so well from my old one. Ears raised, straight like an arrow and heard him growling. Attack mode on in other words. I managed to grab him before he attacked a neighbour who was passing by. Indeed a natural protector.

I live in France and about 20 years ago, the Rotties (and Pitties - I had one too) had such a bad press because of stupid young owners using them as fighting dogs kept in cellars and only let out to fight. One thing to know, however, is that the lab is the dog who bites humans more than any other dog. And why ? Because people think they are so sweet and kind and let their children climb on their backs, pull their tails etc. I believe that the first thing to do is teach children to respect their pets - they aren't toys !!!

Wrong. More Lab bites just due to the sheer number of Labs. Per 100 of each bread, the Lab lower than Rottweiler.

I will say after having 4 Rotties 100% temperament is determined by the quality of dogs that are bred with. Our last rotty was bred with quality show dogs that showed confidence, calm, not food aggressive and 1 of a kind vs all the other Rotties I had. Also he was extremely is to train. Because again the quality of his parents were sound, easy to train, calm, confident and amazing. A little more research needs to be done and considered. Temperaments and health issues will be inherited by parents. You pay for what you get. The expensive show dogs out there are bred to be easy to train, calm, confident and all aspects of dog breed 😄

I have a 3yr old Rottweiler that after obedience training and a LOT of work in the home, we still cannot let my grandkids under 10 around her. She is 125 lbs and gets excited as they do and knocks them down and jumps and steps on them hurting them every time. She loves them and isn’t trying to hurt them but does regardless. I wish I would’ve seen this video earlier and would’ve waited until the grandkids got older bc I hate having to keep them separated. I wouldn’t suggest this breed for homes with small children.

She has amazing photos of both good body language and problematic body language. Brenda also has excellent descriptions of each. I have attended several of her seminars. She is brilliant when it comes to working with dogs. I would highly recommend it for a really thorough explanation.

My Rottie of 11 months has suddenly started biting people. He has been socialized and trained very well. He was super friendly with smaller dogs and dog boarding staff. But since one month he’s been biting people including the owner. What could be the cause? He’s not neutered.

I would really like some clarification on this because every source I have read is very vague about it, but I get the impression the Rottweiler, Cane Corso and the Neapolitan Mastiff are probably the closest links to the Molossus, the possible Grandaddy of all Mastiff breeds. That dog fought with the Roman legions and went back as far as Ancient Greece. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molossus_(dog)

My son has a Rotty/Chow-Chow mix. This 100 lb. dog loves pretty much any warm-blooded animal (i.e., people, dogs, cats, wild game, etc.) and wants to play with them or be loved-on by them. However, true to the Chow-Chow breed, he can also be pretty stubborn and lazy. Nevertheless, he has been a great family dog for the past 7 years.

Yeah, I get why you feel that way. I think in his eagerness to not understate what a big responsibility it will be to make sure the breed is safe, and to make sure it is understood that this breed is not for novice owners, he can at times make it seem like almost any Rottweiler is a dangerous ticking bomb, and it is only a matter of when the bomb will go off. I don't think he intends for it to come across that way though, in his line of work he has probably just seen cases that makes him very aware of the need to make sure people don't choose this breed lightly and thoughtlessly.

I think of a Rottie almost like a big 4x4 truck. Extremely capable, fun, requires maintenance, but also potentially deadly. Do you rule such a vehicle out completely, because of the risks? Or do you simply never leave your kids alone with that vehicle, while still taking full advantage of all the rewards? Same, or similar, deal here.

I appreciate that you don't pull any punches with your deep dive. A lot of dog breeds get bad raps due to bad owners, but that doesn't change the fact that a lot of dog breeds, regardless of owners, are bred for brutal attack and defense. Ignoring this fact and gushing about how much of a sweet heart a well handled one is is incredibly irresponsible and dangerous. Good on you guys for not giving into this while still showing what wonderful animals Rotties are

I like this channel but I don’t think you show enough practical content to entice more people to subscribe. I do tend to watch channels that share some snippets of the actual practical work.

New people when they aren't sure what their human thinks: stay back, i dont know you. New people when sure their human see them as friends: hi newbestfriend am good boy, can i have pets and kisses and bellyrubs? (They tend to hate hugs though, they aren't berners. Best not to try)

He full of crap for generations we have had Rottweiler n never once have they ever tried to bite one of us .. yes caution is always advised and its better for the breed if u don't try to make them into a fighting dog or a mean dog becouse its in them to protect at all cost even at there own life
