Terrence Malick was asked to comment on Friedkins remarks but became enraptured by the plumage of a passing goose and insisted on following it on it's migration..

@@joe5333if anyone is allowed to have an opinion on another directors work, it’s William Friedkin. This reminds me of when people got mad at at Scorsese for his comments on superhero movies. Like, yes, those comments are dismissive, but this man is a master! He’s allowed to have a hot take or two.

I can watch Days Of Heaven a million times & never tire of losing myself in the visual splendour of the whole thing. Some of my favourite films are ones with paper thin plots but it doesn't matter because you get so lost in the imagery that everything else becomes secondary, Days Of Heaven is top of that list of films for me personally.
@postmodernrecycler18 күн бұрын
Exactly. Plot is not unique to cinema; moving imagery is.

Agreed. I'm not a huge fan of Malick myself and Friedkin I could listen to talk about movies day on end. I agree with him here but Days Of Heaven is the exception. That movie transported me to a time in America I could only read about. It is a masterpiece of cinema and one of the medium's true works of art.

The Thin Red Line is one of my favorite movies. Can't speak to anything else Malick has done. As far as Friekin, and I know it's not necessarily well regarded, but I love To Live and Die in L.A. and it makes me think of one of my favorite directors, Michael Mann.

badlands and days are heaven are great films, but from thin red line forward i really don't care for his work.
@jessediaz129318 күн бұрын
That’s because Michael Mann recommended William Peterson to William Friedkin and he put him as the lead in “To Live In Die In LA”.
@ronaldh844616 күн бұрын
Malick's Days Of Heaven is a work of art. Friedkin's The French Connection, The Exorcist, Sorcerer and To Live & Die In L.A. are classics.
@rustyshackelford93413 күн бұрын
Friedkin is just grounded in film traditionalism. All of his films are in line with a typical narrative or plot based film. Where he is telling you a story like a pulp novel or something. He’s not the experimental type that Malick is. I appreciate Friedkin, The French Connection is fucking amazing-that was him in his experimental phase (more so because of restrictions though lol as opposed to a desire to find something new) and it was wonderful, one of the best films of the 1970s, and one of the best NYC pictures period-among other of his films, but he’s got some stinkers as well. Same for Malick. Malick hits some real magic sometimes, when he does it’s spectacular, but he also has some that don’t connect, but I appreciate him for trying, for reaching out and trying to grab something different. I appreciate them both immensely for what they do. They both have their place. But if I had to pick the one that will be remembered for pushing the medium forward, it will be Malick. A lot of people might hate his shit-generally the most revolutionary shit is the most polarizing-but he’s the one trying to expand the cinematic language. It’s as simple as that.

The small talk is overrated, this is a whirlwind of emotions, when you have a crush. "You're gorgeous, I love you so much" this is trite! I would never thought Friedkin said that really. He loved European films, they are experimental. Sorcerer, cruising were experiences, even extremes!
@pillettadoinswartsh497417 күн бұрын
Aw, the man who brought so many new ways of making films, has reached the age where he cannot abide the truly new. That's what hindered Albert Einstein, who gave us relativity theory but then died not being able to abide the even deeper truths of quantum physics. Malick's style works the more grand the story/setting. It doesn't really work in a suburb.
@tetrorisvolto18 күн бұрын
I think it simply depends on the story. Tree of Life is mostly shot in a suburb but the story has a larger than life breadth. To the wonder and to a lesser extent Knight of Cups do feel like parodies of himself, though. I still think his best film remains Badlands, when his style was a bit more in check.
