Taft really was an absolute unit! During his time as president, he found himself in the following crazy situations because he was so big: (1) got stuck in his bathtub and required six people to pull him out, (2) was unable to tie his shoes because he couldn't reach his feet, (3) got out of a carriage and, in so doing, split the seat of his pants, (4) may have had sleep apnea because of his size, which meant that he tended to go to sleep almost at random, (5) stood up to give a speech - which caused the chair on which he had been sitting to rise with him and someone had to pull it off his hips, (6) required such large chairs that there are now comparison pictures online and a video labeled as "sitting in President Taft's huge chair," and (7) was very prone to gout, lower back pain, and other aches and pains! Edit: he was overweight all his life, including his childhood. However, because of the fact that he hated being president, he experienced an uncontrolled weight gain during this period of his life.

The statement that you can't sneak anything past William Howard Taft is actually true on two levels. While I'm sure it was meant to be a reference to his huge size, it could also refer to his war on business trusts. Indeed, he was so intent on getting rid of such that he and his administration initiated twice the antitrust lawsuits of Roosevelt in basically half the time. And that even included the trusts that Roosevelt had ignored on purpose!

Yes, Taft was a very cool guy! For one thing, he had to have been very emotionally and mentally strong to just jump into an election he had no desire to win just for the sake of others!
