Wondering through a forest of thought is an excellent metaphor for reading philosophy. It also reminds me of Walter Benjamin's essay on translation. A Translator goes to a forest's edge but doesn't enter and speaks. The goal is to find the right spot to find a echo from the outside.

Augustine: I believe in order to understand. Mark: I understand in order to believe. I have spent some time studying theology. And I could be inept in what I have learned both formally and on my own. But if one makes a claim, it better be a justified true belief, and one better be able to defend ones claim from all comers. Thank you.

I don't know that being able to defend it from all comers is all that important.

@@GregoryBSadler In some Academic circles, one would expose ones claim to criticism in order to learn if ones claim does not entail a contradiction that would mean it is untrue. This assumes a trusting, collaborative effort, which may be very difficult to find.

In a public forum, one can live a philosophical life by arguing ones claim to anyone who will interrogate you, or who will be interrogated by you. Socrates took the opportunity of his trial to argue for the philosophic life with his 500 or so jurors. He opened himself with the highest possible stakes to argue both truthfully and logically to all who were trying him. This was heroic.

@@MrMarktrumble I think that in some cases, it can be useful to have that sort of exposure. My general experience has been that the objections most potential interlocutors would raise aren't worth considering, for a variety of reasons. And then, there's the factor of the time that would need to be devoted

@@GregoryBSadler You have much more experience and exposure than I do. I think that Socrates did what he did to put the laws on trial, and to argue for personal integrity and virtue (in contrast to public observance of communal rites) as a religious principle. Not every argument would have this weight, nor this possible consequence. One does pick ones battles, and as for myself, I do not have the virtue of parrhesia, and listen and think in silence perhaps too much.

Thanks for the video! Am I right in saying you are a Christian? If so, do you try to separate your faith from a philosophical pursuit for a justification of your faith? For me personally, I used to do that but nowadays I put all philosophy into the context of Christian philosophy. Thanks!
