The simple fact that he was not killed during his arduous career as a knight after coming from an impoverished beginning and even rising to the rank of an Earl and lived to die a somewhat peaceful death in his senior years during this violent period in the history of England is a phenomenal accomplishment in itself.

This depiction is lacking William Marshall. When he was a boy he was captured by a rival of his father. instead of giving up the castle father told the rival to keep him, he can make other sons. That rival was King Stephen during rebellion with Empress Mathilde. Marshall also lost battles. he was the greatest Knight. Your correct why had they not made Hollywood movie about his life. We have medieval movies depicting Marshall nothing on his life. There were two truly all-time great knights..one was William Marshall. The other was Rodrigo Diaz of Vivar, the great Cid of Spain. Both men had the same courageous values, the same dedication to honor, the same devotion to service to their kings...however awful their kings may have been. They were incorruptible. They were both singular, truly remarkable men. Fascinating and marvelous!

It is incredible he managed to not only survive, but thrive under FIVE different English Kings (never fatally falling out of favor), survive countless battles and wounds, ultimately dying of old age at 72. This was a time when plotting and scheming was *constant* in English society. Even the slightest slip up could could cause a King or some barons to off you, and yet he kept on keeping on to an age almost nobody lived to in those days.

I think there is a mistake. Arthur of Brittany was the son of Geoffrey, who was the 3rd or 4th ( I don't remember) legitimate son of Henry II. King Henry also had an illegitimate son named Geoffrey but he was the archbishop of York. Apart from this note, I greatly admire William Marshal. Many knights in Medieval history left their mark in history, and there are many that can match Marshal for military prowess, but he had qualities that other knights didn't have :loyalty, honor, diplomatic abilities. I hope I can come to London soon (covid and Brexit allowing ) to visit his tomb in Temple church. I think he will be pleased to know his fame survives 800 years after his death, so that an Italian girl desires to pay visit to his tomb.

Hello Maria you are quite right, Arthur of Brittany was the son of Geoffrey II Duke of Brittany, who in turn was the fourth son of Henry II, Arthur was the rightful heir of Richard but was considered too young to take the crown, and so he was, as we said, the nephew of Richard but he wasn't illegitimate, he was born posthumously, after the death of his father, Geoffrey, thanks for pointing that out, I hope that clarifies the matter.

Last year I went to Temple Church in the heart of the law quarter of London and saw the tomb of the Marshal himself. Also it's where they had crucial meetings regarding Magna Carta and was the English headquarters of the Knights Templar. You just need to pay a small entrance fee, not sure if it's open at the moment due to covid though.

I did both places in a day with my dad. The Hospitaller museum charts their journey from the Crusades to the modern day St John's Ambulance.

The original one was mostly destroyed in 1941 when German incendiary bombs lit the roof of the Temple Church on fire, and a bunch of the structure collapsed.

To join join the Templars you had to hand over all your worldly goods. Marshal had a number of castles and manors etc. He was sneaky, he waited until a few minutes before his death to join.

A couple of notes. None of William Marshal's sons had children. His daughters,yes. Looking up the history of his descendants is quite interesting. I recall reading that during his lifetime,he was on record as stating that King John had the personality of a felon. Strong words for the time period. Yet he maintained loyalty to the family. Loyalty to the children of Eleonar ? Possibly. Loyalty to the rule of law at a time when rebellion was rife ? Possibly. From minor knight to the corridors of power. An amazing life.

I myself am moderately interested in my genealogy, but the further back in time one looks, the more likely it is that there's an unrecorded break in the bloodline. This can come about from infidelities, adoptions, and errors in the records or misinterpretations of the records. Supposedly, I am descended from the 2nd Governor of the Plymouth Colony, who was a passenger in the Mayflower, and also of Edward the First of England. I take all that with a fairly large grain of salt though.

CADW do a fantastic guide related to Chepstow Castle which I used to use to teach at a secondary school about the life of William Marshall. If interested in his life, this little guide is a fabulous starting point, and it is pretty cheap too. The castle is well worth a visit, a place in which he added to greatly seeing as it sat in the middle of his territory in England, Wales and Ireland following his marriage to Isabell de Clare in 1199.

Very informative. Absolutely magnificent selection of pictures, stills and drawings for this video. Everything spot on against the narration. It's also amazing to think there is / was that much information available regarding the life of an early English period personage. So often there's almost no information available. However, seeing how you were able to hobble / cobble together such details; certainly destroys this myth. Again very well done. It was a great history lesson.

I wouldn't call Richard the Lionheart a sissy king. He was the exact opposite of that. If you read up on his exploits, he was the very definition of a warrior king. In the Battle of Jaffa he jump of his ship and marched through water and lead his men to storm beach and attack Saladin's forces, pushing them back. Later in the same battle, when the two sides reorganised and started skirmishing. He rode up and down Muslim lines, lance stretched out in the air as a challenge to duel with the Muslim forces. Not one of enemies challenged him despite the personal glory it would entail or how it much it would boost Muslim morale and war effort. This was likely because by this point, he had gained a reputation of being a skilled and ferocious fighter, known for personally slaying many enemies in the Battle of Arsuf. And that's not even going into how much of a skilled military commander was.

@@strikemasterice2004 you dont even have to read specifically about richard to know this if you have a proper understanding of the period. trust me i know of what you speak. my post brief and not exactly detailed because this is a comments section on youtube of all places. the thing is, mashal by comparison must have been much stronger and smarter than richard ever was. this is almost certainly fact. so by comparison, yes, richard was something like a sissy compared to literally the greatest fighter of all time literally of all history. also, its quite possible many kings and nobility were successful because of the equipment they had, among several other advantages including nutrition and mental awareness. almost the entire population including children but minus any nobility were severe alcoholics of that time. quite a sad thing. but also, even with all these advantages, there is the likely possibility that kings fought a certain way, in sort of an easy position and not bearing down the front line. so yes, i definitely believe my statement was accurate and doesnt need any commentary or correction... but im still interested on hearing your thoughts on this, if you have any left

I would disagree that you don't have to read specifically about Richard to know this if you have a proper understanding of the period, given that the complexity and nuance of history is often swept away under broad generalization, which usually won't take into account the specific time period or geographical location that a fact or piece of information may apply to. For example, the Levant during the time of the Third Crusade was politically, culturally, economical, religiously and military different from Europe at that time. So to contextualize Richards performance during the crusade, you will have to understand the situation in Holy Land at the time and how the world worked in the Middle East. I would like to point out that there would not have been any significant difference in arms and armour of a king vs a knight during the 12th Century. The main form of protection would have been a surcoat worn over mail, worn over gambeson. This wasn't the 15th Century where kings had exquisite full plate while most men-at-arms would rely on a mixture of plate, brigandine, gambeson and mail, depending on what they could afford. Most of stock images shown throughout the video were not accurate as they depict arms/amour from centuries ahead. Marshal was also born into nobility and received training to become a knight, where his equipment was initially sponsored for him. Yes, Marshall did perform a great feat by capturing two knights at the same time in a single tourney with a regular horse, but he won 4 warhorse as a result, and I doubt from that point on he was going into battles and tourneys with inadequate equipment. When Richard challenged the Saladin's forces to a duel, the Muslims army would have had Mamluks, who would have been trained in warfare since youth and sported heavy weapons and armour similar to a knight, including mail, lamellar, lances, maces, armoured horses, metal helms, shields and swords. So he wasn't challenging some lightly armed Muslim conscript, but rather the elite of the Saracen forces. You make a good point about the difference of nutrition and mental awareness between nobility and commoners. However, Marshal was also born into nobility. This video tells us that Marshal himself stated that he was a lazy teenager, more concerned with food and sleep, and was teased by his peers for his gluttonous habits in his younger years. So there isn't really much of a difference between Richard and Marshal in this regard. And yes, even when fighting in the front lines, kings would usually be protected by a retinue of knights. However, we can see that on several occasions that Richard was willing to put himself in harms way. The beach landing at Jaffa that I mentioned in my previous comment he lead his men from the front towards the enemy while wading through water, later that day when he issued a challenged and the rode along the line of the Muslim army, and he was shot at by a crossbow, where the first shot initially missed him but he (stupidly) goaded the crossbowman into taking another shot which ended up killing him from infection. As for your claim that everyone other than the nobility were "severe alcoholism", I heavily disagree. We not comparing a weak man and strong man. We comparing two well accomplished men. You can say Marshal stronger and smarter, I actually mostly agree with that statement in some way (I can't be bothered getting into how specifically), but given everything Richard has accomplished, you can't Richard was a sissy when compared to any man. Perhaps lesser, yes, but not a sissy.
