Imagine what would have happened had FOR THE PEOPLE been picked up for another season: Shatner would have been committed to this show and wouldn't have had the opportunity to take the role of James T. Kirk, His entire acting career would almost certainly have been completely different. And while there may be a bit of curse being known for such an iconic role, one can't argue with the fact that it has become legendary and has ensured Shatner more than just a footnote in the history of entertainment. There are few shows--if any--that have gone on to match the place in popular culture that STAR TREK continues to occupy.

Running for 13 episodes, CBS's "FOR THE PEOPLE" was a Herbert Brodkin-produced legal drama with soon-to-be "James Kirk" himself, William Shatner, as "David Koster", a brash young lawyer, aggressive enough to pursue justice, considering that in 2004, Shatner would star in David E. Kelly's ABC series, "BOSTON LEGAL" (2004-2009), from 20th Century Fox Television, starring as "Denny Crane", which was a high profile oddball lawyer, with David Spader as his partner, Alan Shore. the series was a spinoff from ABC's "THE PRACTICE", and ran for 101 episodes, but a far cry from his CBS series from 1965, although short-lived, Herbert Brodkin had already established himself with legal TV drama with CBS's "THE DEFENDERS", and co-star Jessica Walters would go on to fame as the obsessed "Evelyn Draper" in Clint Eastwood's "PLAY MISTY FOR ME" (1971), and on NBC's "ANN PRENTIS", (1974) the short-lived spinoff from "IRONSIDE" and ending her acting career before her passing as one of the voices in FX's "ARCHER" series. "FOR THE PEOPLE" was produced by Herbert Brodkin's Plautus Productions, who later produced "CORONET BLUE", which was filmed in 1965, but aired on CBS in the Summer of 1967.

The guest star on this episode of CBS's "FOR THE PEOPLE" is Gerald S. O'Laughlin, who, six years later, would co-star on another CBS series called "THE STOREFRONT LAWYERS", later rebranded as "MEN AT LAW", a 1970-71 TV series produced by "HAWAII FIVE-O" creator, Leonard Freeman for National General and The CBS Television Network. created by David Karp, "MEN AT LAW" starred Robert Foxworth as Attorney "David Hansen", and O'Laughlin as "Darrell McNeil", Attorney At Law. two years later, Gerald O'Laughlin played on ABC-TV's "THE ROOKIES" (1972-1976) from Spelling-Goldberg Productions, and the short-lived Glen A. Larson/20th Century Fox TV series, "AUTOMAN" for ABC in 1984.

What an incredible series! Extremely realistic filming and subject matter, superb acting & directing. I guess this lost out to Bonanza because For The People was TOO realistic, i.e., depressing, ambiguous endings. The film-makers must've been so disappointed. So am I. Bonanza was television's first megahit in color. And it was NBC's flagship prime time series. It even spurred the sales of color TV sets and was a Sunday night family gathering event. Sadly, For The People's superb, if gritty drama never had a ratings chance against such a juggernaut.

Very telling situation this show. If it had not been up against Bonanza, it could have run for 5 years. But our society had degraded so far by 1965 that most people would rather watch shows about cowboys and indians than NYC Attorneys, Criminals, Cops, and judges. I suppose it is all by design, the dumber we all become, the easier we are to handle, and the easier it is for the global corporations to extract all of our earnings from us in exchange for consumption of liabilities in the form of disposable goods and services. I wish this show had lasted longer, the all Jewish production, writing, and direction was very very good.
