Here in '79, only a decade had passed since the cancellation of the original Trek show. But in the interim, OG Star Trek was kept alive by the 1973 Animated Series, Silent Running, Close Encounters, Jaws, Six Million Dollar Man, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Logans Run, Alien, etc & the beginnings of the sci-fi conventions. All these things of the 1970's contributed to keeping science fiction alive. And Shatner was constantly working in '70's films & TV, as well as Nimoy (notably "In Search Of", for me) & the rest of the gang. Nice to see Richard Dawson here too, takes me back to my youth watching his rendition of Family Feud. Now most of them are gone, including Dawson, so it's good to know that Shatner & Severinsen are still around. Johnny Carson was my dad's favorite late night host, who also became mine as well, although Conan is also my fave.

I honestly love how much charisma William Shatner has. He gave off this air of confidence in himself in the late 70s and 80s that he didn’t seem to have as much of in earlier years. I think it made him even more attractive! I loved him in his Kirk days during the 60s but in the late 70s and 80s I feel like he became so much more sure of himself probably from his success and maturity- and sexier as a result!

The critics censured it, but this is what Star Trek needed. A movie of great SPECIAL EFFECTS. This is in my opinion the best one. Trying to recapture the original series. Kirk with his arrogance and his Enterprise. An upgrade of the tv series. It could have been a tv movie.

It's possible he was trying to renegotiate at this point. There was even rumours about him possibly moving to another network. However, by the time 1980 came around, the show was reduced from 90 to 60 minutes, which was actually a condition of him getting renewed. He would remain as host of the Tonight Show until May 1992.
@dougr31423 жыл бұрын
Yes, Johnny was considering quitting or moving to another network around this time but of course that didn't happen. He did got a raise, got every Monday off and had the show reduced from 90 to 60 minutes. Johnny took a lot of time off in the '70s, his most frequent guest hosts at that time included McLean Stevenson, David Brenner, David Letterman, John Davidson, Jerry Lewis, Bob Newhart, Joey Bishop and Steve Allen.

Craig F. was hilarious but different than Richard. Craig played everything for a laugh and Richard seems like he actually cares. As far as Ray C. being better on Family Feud, you must have been breathing too many fumes from the Enterprise.
@heartlandhobbyist75162 жыл бұрын
William Shatner was almost chosen over Richard Dawson to host Family Feud. Knowing this now makes seeing this interview even more fascinating. In comparing Ray Combs to Richard Dawson, Dawson was a comedian and a natural presenter. He was more at ease with people than Ray Combs who would try to work the audience for a laugh while Richard’s dry British humor could be funny w/o trying to be. IMO Dawson was the superior Family Feud host but having said that, Dawson did have an incredibly large ego and a reputation for being very difficult to work with that got him black balled and his work after the original run of ‘Feud was extremely limited. In essence, 1985 was when Dawson “retired ” until coming back in the 90s to replace Ray Combs for one season on Family Feud.
