He would have burned English villages to the ground him and his men and like most soldiers back then would have killed most of the men unless they were worth some ransom and the woman were raped. Yes he fought for his country but he was no better than any other warrior back them. He should not be Romanized

This is exactly the sort of comment I just made on the Biographics channel. I feel like Wallace was more of a hero than Robert the Bruce as he seemed to never switch sides. He traveled on behalf of an independent Scotland, was captured by France, was captured again by the English, suffered one of the more horrific deaths in history (can it get much worse?) and he always fought against the English and anyone who opposed Scottish independence. Robert the Bruce often backed England and waited to see if there was a chance for the crown. Did Wallace even care for the crown?

@@PeopleProfiles Thank you! A thought crossed my mind. Let's imagine that Robert the Bruce, after freeing his people, said "You know what? Let's give the English a taste of their own medicine!". He gathers a large army, invades England and defeats the English in a number of occassions. Would have the Welsh staged a revolt against the English crown or would have they supported it, driven by fear that the English would have retaliated, in case of a failure? I know that such an invasion would have been pretty unlikely but I want you and others to see it as just a simple mind exercise and come up with some scenarios, backed up by arguments, pro and con.

Any person who would stand against tyranny for the betterment of his people would be considered, by most, as it is with Sir William Wallace, a NATIONAL HERO. I believe the man did what he believed was necessary in bringing his people out from beneath the yoke of terrible masters. Besides, think about it, what country wants to be vassals of another, regardless of the circumstances? I'm not Scottish, not a drop of Scottish blood in me. English by half, actually, and I consider Sir William Wallace to be one of the most amazing, enigmatic, and impressive peoples throughout history. And the long road Scotland has gone through to be a free country of it's own is in part, due to his actions. Without them, Scotland may never of seen it's individual status, as the reason they have it are due to his actions in trying to obtain it.

Both their parents had farms and they got married before WW2 broke out he went to the western front and was returned for medical reasons and ends up working in the Bantam Jeep factory making Jeeps and torpedoes. After the first daughter in 1944 my mother was born a year or so later and the rest is history. My whole family has been veterans since the beginning of my family after the farm. Well, it is really debatable because Wallace was a medieval man, so he wouldn't have probably understood what it means to be a member of an institution like EU. He would have just thought of an indipendent Scotland with strong European alliances. Considering this, plus the fact the auld alliance lasted until at leat the 17th, and the fact that in Scotland the Remainers were more numerous than the Brexiters in 2016, I think that Wallace would have preferred to stand aside France than England.

Thank you very much for this concise but very detailed examination of the life of William Wallace. What do I think? Was he an outlaw? I think he was a law unto himself, and marched to another tune altogether, a higher cause, so to speak. I believe the account this documentary gives of the manner of his horrendous death ('execution' - so called) would serve well as an example of the English King's reign & legacy (though Longshanks had passed away when the aforementioned atrocity took place). I admit I have not investigated the life of Edward 'longshanks'. Accordingly, I would still see Bannockburn, in context, as Wallace's, posthumous and contemptuous riposte. Sequentially, a vivid token of Scottish outrage and indignation in fully fledged fury and rebellion. And so, William Wallace, himself, has become an exemplar of a quality the people of his country are known to possess in great measure, and a tradition that has earned a full blooded reputation as "Scotland the Brave". So William Wallace, indeed, proved that victory over tyranny, however powerful, is always possible and in doing so showed his countrymen a path to liberty. For this reason, to the Scots, Wallace, not Robert the Bruce, is 'Big Daddy'.

What a clearly well researched fascinating documentary clarifying historical facts. As a genuine half Keith Clan, half English man, I see little difference between the politicians today and the King and nobles back then. Wallace was a brigand, but a true leader with a worthwhile cause back then, but if he saw the SNP today, he'd be mightily dissappointed, as the English are with the WEF Tories. Another reformation of government is required for the United Kingdom, from the people, for all the people which we all deserve ... allegedly as Wallace's last word was "Freedom". Look up Magna Carta signed in June 1215 and still legal today, a fact our present Govt overlooks.

Not bad. It touches upon the confusing reality of Scoto-Norman noblemen switching sides from England to Scots and back again since they (which included Wallace) were more interested in retaining status and land rather than any modern concept of 'freedom'. In reality they were only interested in ordinary Scottish people as workers for their land.

As regards Wallace's youth and education, it is worth looking at the experience of the English knight William Marshal. Both men were the younger sons of minor noblemen, had no lands or fortune to inherit, and had to make their own way in life. Wallace, like Marshal, may well have been brought up in the household of a more senior nobleman and there begin his training as a fighting man but also possibly be taught biblical stories, prayers and Latin.

Wow. What an amazing creation of a masterpiece of a video! (I hope this sentence makes sense. xD) Watching this video and then following it up by watching your video on "Edward III" seems perfect to me. I remember, that in the Edward III video, you told something in the end which roughly implied that "we should not judge beliefs and customs of those times with the beliefs and thinking of 'our' times, but instead, try and understand the thinking of people of those times from the perspective and thinking of 'those' times." That was a brilliant and wise statement from you, and has made me think a lot about how I have viewed history until now. Remembering that statement and thinking here, I can understand that acts of treason (according to the English/British) had to be met with harsh punishments. However, I still feel really upset over the treatment of WIlliam Wallace post capture. It is hard to imagine, and it makes me feel really sad about it. However, forms of executions were unusually brutal in those times. So, I guess, from their ways of thinking, it was only fair that a traitor must be treated like that. Thanks for this video. Appreciate the effort that goes into each upload. Have a nice day, The People Profiles team.

@@PeopleProfiles You're welcome. :) That last sentence. Words of wisdom. So true. I have been one of those as well, at times, criticising without understanding other possible explanations and perspectives. I can imagine to be in their places, but, I feel like my solutions would be ineffective, and would probably make me look like a weak figure, to the point that if i was a king, some strong person of power would easily be able to throw me out of power. xD Plus, I believe more in science and facts than in religion, so, I think, the seriously religious people of those times would have probably not liked me. And, because of this thinking, I find it more difficult to imagine how I could have adjusted to the way people were brought up in those times. xD Still, interesting viewpoint from you. It was great knowing about your channel. Keep up the good work. My best wishes with you.

Isnt it strange that the Scots were allowed pretty much everything they had fought for minus their king, whom I'm pretty sure would have been supplicant to Edward, indicating a reluctance on Balliols part to return and a reluctance of the nobles to bring him back. They were fighting for their right to have a King, mainly so that those competing could be king, not necessarily for king John right to remain king. So the Scottish rights had been restored and the price ? William Wallace. If this was the price for peace do you not think William would have gladly payed it? To be made an outlaw for the price of peace by those that who's power he had maintained. Essentially William had achieved his goals, liberty of Scotland. He had set the example that the nobles must follow, he had fought and stratagised the English to a standstill, the price, the wasting of his country. He had diplomatically won in Europe, shaming Edward and all his glory by reducing him to a trespasser and tyrant for all the world to hear of. Edward so hated Wallace that he forsook Scotland to remove him from the political scene and conived to capture the man he could not conquer. Every other player could be manipulated, had their price, and Edward payed it. In doing so William was removed from the game and isolated. What choice did William have? His most effective strategy was scorched earth, which meant his own people dying of starvation. He knew that was unsustainable, in much the same way as Edward now knew conquering Scotland without the nobles consent couldn't be done. In that respect it very much could have went Edward's way, by buying or bullying the Scots, but for one man. William shamed the nobles by his example, for I think that what happened at Irvine set the precedent for what was to come as far as the nobility was concerned. People think Irvine was a defeat, a capitulation. It wasnt, the Scottish nobles got exactly what they wanted, what they turned out for. What threw it all to pot was what William then done at Stirling. Can you see what a threat to the establishment this was ? These great Scottish nobles cant do what William did, so why the hell do we need the nobles ? At the very least they had to show their worth by taking up arms, until such times as the people themselves were either victorious, defeated, Wallace dead or sick of war. The one thing they could not do now, which they could have before Stirling, is acquiesce. In the same way as he shamed the nobles he prevented Edward's schemes to have the nobles acquiesce, not only did he beat an English field army and make the conquest of Scotland untenable, but William then let the highest courts of europe know the tyranny of Edward. Reputation was everything to these men. To not crusade was shameful, imagine being declared a tyrant, an unjust tyrant, trying to exploit your weaker Christian neighbour. That's like being the head of a company being caught with his hand in the till, and someone else's at that. The shame and humiliation, justly, put upon Edward. Wallace had done the one thing your not supposed to do, the one thing that your not supposed to be able to do. He had turned the whole entire game on its head and in doing so had exposed its players to the ultimate scrutiny, the truth. Not just the misdeeds of others, that's only half of it, but he had stepped forward as a shining example of what these other players had been pretending to be, a true noble. Not in rank, but in spirit. Wallace's greatest offence was in a common man exposing every other to be lesser, even kings.
