I don't follow the logic which suggests that extending human rights to animals reduces us to animals. Obviously we can't extend "human" rights as such to non human beings, but even still, how would attempting to do so "reduce" us to animals?

Removing the special status of human beings in law, which is an (unintended) consequence of extending human rights to animals, (or AI) does not lift the animals up (no animal is going to realize its rights), but it will remove the moral responsibility of human agents. This does no one any good, let alone the animals.

@@LitProf I suppose I would ask if an animal needs to "realize its rights" in order for it to be dignified/recognized as a co-creature, sacred in its very living. Is it not more obvious that humanity's exceptionality is precisely what lays the moral responsibilty on us to care for animals and extend rights to them? I'm familiar with a few fascinating court cases which have ruled in animals' favour on humanitarian grounds. They've only ever seemed like beacons of human morality is capable of.
