I love the British, tea & scones......this is just adorable. It was also really informative, it was a shame this was such a short segment.

Wikipedia claims that the pronunciation "scon" (rhyming with gone) is associated with the north of England and the northern working class. This startled me because that's how I pronounce it but I'm not from the north of England, nor am I working class. However, I knew where to head to assuage my fears. Thank you, William, for confirming my pronunciation is correct.

Last week I travelled in England, Derbyshire with my mom and we both wanted to experience afternoon tea and a tearoom/coffeehouse was nice and vintage styled, so not a high-class place where old fine ladies goes. We enjoyed our afternoon tea but we felt like we have been observed. We probably broke many etiquettes/rules. I guess watching this video is a bit late :)

it may be etiquette to put the milk in after, but scientifically, it is better to put the milk in first, so that you don't scald the milk pouring it into hot tea. it's like in chemistry, you add the concentrated acid to water, not water to the acid. You will get a better tasting cup of tea putting the milk into the cup first and won't get a layer of 'scum' on the surface of the tea.

William is amazing but Gino forgot to hold the lid of the teapot while pouring.

William, I am so glad I found this video! My sister-in-law and I are traveling to London and will be experiencing our first afternoon tea at the Grosvenor House in October. This is my birthday trip and we are both excited to be able to apply proper etiquette during our tea with thanks to you!

Something tells me Gino's faux pas would be completely forgiven by the best hostess. How adorable he is.

it is not improper to put the jam on first; both ways are acceptable, it depends on your origins or personal preference.

If someone made that rule long ago at the whim of their personal preference, why can't someone change that rule on a whim to suit their personal preference today?

William, is it proper to put out a pinky when drinking tea?

Heather Allardice No - it is not correct to have your little finger out now when drinking tea. A common misconception!

William Hanson Please correct me if I am wrong... but as I understand it, putting out the little finger served the purpose of balance... so is, proper, if done discreetly. However, aggressively jutting the pinky out, for show, as some people do, is an affectation and is not good manners.
