Yes, that's weird. Think about the limitation you set on him; he should be allowed to be himself, and you should love and care for him regardless. He isn't a pet. How would you like it if he said you can't gain or surpass your weight when he first met you? He respects you enough to listen to you, but do you respect him enough to allow him to be himself? He may ultimately decide on his own that he wants a cleaner look to make you happy, but by you not allowing that desire to be himself, it may never grow organically. Sometimes, something that one may think is small and not a big deal is restrictive enough to deter internal growth
