Wet the window once last time, then wet the window again. Finally wet the window. When you are finished, spray the window with water, remove the excess and wet the window six more final times.

Excellent technique convinced me to not try DIY. 3M has a special sealant for doing around the edges, assume that should be part of the install. Obviously, when you have finished wetting the window one final time, ledged has it the installer is still on this window wetting it one final time.

The video gets a bit confusing at 2:30. You distinguished between the "film" and the "liner" and insisted that the liner side must face up. Then, at 2:40, you ask that the "film" be wetted with water, except the "film" is now down against the table, and the "liner" is up, so this is actually spraying the liner with water. But when you later unroll the material, it's clear to me that the "film" side that's being left on the window actually had to be down in the step where you said it needed to be up and that's why you said to spray the water on the film rather than on the liner when it it was lying on the table. It's no wonder everyone is confused by this video.

Those wondering if it helps. I dunno. It's meant to be a reflective insulator, like the foil you can put in attics. If it's IR reflective, it could turn some radiant heat away from the window in both directions. The normal rule of needing an air space to reflect radiant heat can be suspended if the object in the way is glass, and lets radiant IR through. Normally a reflective insulator needs an air space to reflect IR into, but with glass it _could_ work. If it's UV reflective, it could keep out some solar energy in summer, you probably don't have any interior UV to reflect back in in winter. I don't know if 3M's film does this though, or how well if it does. I'm just pointing out that a lot of traditional wisdom regarding IR reflective insulators (and not putting them directly against a surface) gets 'weird & not entirely true' if the barrier it's up against is transparent to IR. Just saying that the concept _could_ work.

I've done this every single fall since I was young. I am now 67. I should go into business doing this. I have a great helpful hint to shrink covering your windows. The top corners are the first thing that wants to release. Use clear packaging tape or white duct tape and tape the hell out of those top corners. You'll be glad you did. On some windows that have white trim. I white duct tape the whole frame.

@ozarkmedia
@ozarkmedia 2 жыл бұрын
@@orangefield2308 It does. The low emissivity properties work in both directions to reject heat. In summer it keeps heat outside. In winter it keeps heat inside. The second law of thermodynamics says that entropy is why heat (more energy) flows toward cold (lower energy). This film creates a boundary layer (thus the name thinsulate) that rejects this transfer of heat…so it works in two directions in summer vs winter.

It does NOT have any sound dampening properties. The only real way to help with that is to insulate and soundproof your walls around the glass or if the window is the issue - you will need to upgrade to better windows with multiple layers of glass with gas injected between them. Ask your local window dealers about that stuff.

Yeah, it's called cling film. Make a wooden frame to fit your window recess, wrap cling film around the frame (front & back). make sure to overlap each time, go over it gently with a hairdryer. This creates a form of double glazing. As it is set away from the window itself, and hopefully a tight fit in the window recess, you should now notice a huge reduction in draughts. This is something my dad did back in the 60s to insulate the windows when we had the old Crittal single glazing. no more puddles of water on the windowsill, no more 'jack frost' on the inside of the glass

@srolesen
@srolesen 3 жыл бұрын
this will keep just about 0 heat outside because the film is absorbing infrared not reflecting it (pretty much impossible to do through glass short of actual mirrors) Long story short, your double-pane windows are now heaters in the summer. If you have single pane you need new windows anyway so might as well get the proper glass, but yeah theoretically the film would work "better"
