I must admit, I was a great Lester Piggott fan and cursed Willie on many occasions but as the years passed and heard him letting his guard down, I realised what a lovely genuine man he was and still is. Obviously, Willie couldn't give an inch to Lester and at times it came across there was no love lost but I was very wrong.

My fav Jockey, Erhaab victory was amazing. Bahri, Dayjur, Nashwan, Henbit, Troy and so many.

My hero on the flat, he never gave up always trying. Nashwan was the most beautiful horse . No one ever mentions his ride on Sun Princess, drops her out to 2nd last then came round the whole field to take it up 4f out and then went onto win by 10 lengths. The doom and gloom around Nashwans defeat, it came to light that he burst a blood vessel. Willies face during the Cauthen interview 🤣🤣

I remember Willie coming second at Newmarket first time out on Erhaab as a 3yo. Finished fast and looked like he hit him a good few times. However, the head on showed he hadn’t touched him at all! Very clever ruse. Next time out he won the Dante. He did exactly the same on Mister Son at Goodwood, then went on to win the St Leger. A very crafty jockey for sure.

To see how far and quickly Troy made ground up passed the leader then went clear was incredibly impressive.

To think the 2nd Dickens Hill that year won Irish 2000gns, 2nd Derby, 2nd Irish Derby and won the Eclipse what a constitution

i used to bet with this guy and we would do a permed placepot every saturday.........it would involve picking a banker and if it was his turn i knew we would be doing the meeting carson was riding and carson would be riding our banker...on one derby day he wanted to banker carson in the derby on a 12\1 shot i think it was trained by dick hern who won a minor derby trial at i think newmarket over 10f.........i said to him i dont think he will stay but my main worry he wasnt good enough.........we ended up bankering him........i think he finished about 12th..........i think he was a brilliant jockey bit i was quite happy when he retired..........
